Thought McGeeney spoke very well after the game, fair play to him. very sporting.

very exciting game. down got the rub of the green with decisions etc, great to make it to another final, it has been too long since the last one.

thought danny hughes and kevin mckernan were superb. and marty clarke is up there with the best i have ever seen in terms of skill and vision. if a few more players had his vision down would have had at least 3 goals today!

QuoteFAO No1, just as well you changed the manager during the season or you would have ended up wearing canterbury jerseys next season!

Sure what make of training gear do you think we are using now?   :o

I could tell you a story but I'm gonna let bygones be bygones.

I could tell you a few myself!

It isn't even anything to do with GAA!

Maybe Kilclief would be interested in trying some of that gear now that they are off the bottom of the league ;)

Its that kind of attitude which could well see Down bate on Saturday - with limited appreciation and understanding for the way the modern game has evolved from their catch and kick days I really feel for them being cut in two by a cynical Kerry outfit.  History, tradition will not help on Saturday.  The 1994 AI final was one of the most negative displays of football Ive ever seen.

dont know what about negative, more scrappy, could have been something to do with the driving rain throughout the game.

on a more serious note, good to see golderyears keeping everyones feet on the ground, someone had to do it. far too many people getting ahead of themselves and getting excited about a team that realistically has beaten no one. think we should note that tyrone more or less threw the anglo celt in the boot of the car and forgot about it, they have bigger prizes to chase.

anyway good to still be in the champonship at this stage, looking forward to saturday.

GAA Discussion / Re: Sligo V Down Rd 4 Qualifier

Just home, journey is always a bit more pleasant after a win despite the terrible roads.

On a side note, manners of the turnstile attendant on the way in was the worst i have ever experienced. bad enough paying €25 without that!!

Great crowd there from both counties and atmosphere in the ground was great at the start of the game. King won the throw in for down and they never really looked back. played fast first time football and sligo just could not cope. it has to be noted that sligo were missing their 2 midfielders (taylor and Gilmartin) and lost Johnny Davey (who has been excellent all year) to what looked like a serious enough injury early on. Eamonn o'hara also seemed to suffer a fairly bad injury but soldiered on until near the end.

some great scores taken in the first half with mccomiskey having hard luck for a goal after a great move (great save by the keeper). i think john clarkes first half goal was definitely a square ball.

Garvey and mckernan were both excellent in defence and dan gordon seems to be looking more and more comfortable at full back. mckernan drove the team forward at all opportunities and in the end his man had to be taken off.

ronan murtagh had a great game when he came on and ambroses goal was thoroughly deserved. king also put in a big shift and rightly got a big ovation from the down support when he was replaced by peter fitzpatrick in the second half.

good to get the win but still abit hard to get excitied about due to sligo being poor for 2/3 of the game. sorry end to the season for them after lighting up the championship for a while.

looking forward to next week, although still a bit concerned that we tend to fall back into our old habits of passing across the field and also the fact that there always seems to be large periods of every game where 13 players are camped in around the middle of the field with 2 up front and about 60 yards of space between.

p.s. that would have been some goal for pete fitzpatrick had it gone in.

A very enjoyable day and night in Thurles.  First half was poor with a a lot of wides from both sides.  The intensity really picked up in the second half.  The free for the Waterford goal at the end should never have been given.  The atmosphere around before and after the game was good.  Did anyone notice the GPA's page in the program advertising the self employed Waterford players businesses?  Good idea but I couldn't belive they had their mobile numbers on it.  Maybe supporters are more mature in Munster but I could just imagine the windups that would happen if this was done in Ulster.  Semple stadium is a fine venue, I even got a walk on the hallowed turf apres match and the quality of the surface is fantastic.  The accomodatioin in Hayes hotel is third world at the best, I wasn't there in 1884 but the rooms don't look to have been done up since. Good to see another Down man and GAA boarder (OurNial) in Thurles too before the game.  I though there was more than 35k people at the game.

You sure you aren't getting mixed up there amallon?

QuoteYou shouldn't complain, could be a while before you have 'the privalage' again

When I go to the minor AI final, I'll stock up in the Spar across the road.
it'll be taken off you on the way in, it could be deemed potentially dangerous, you could use it to attack the referee!!

I've been complaining about the price of all that shite in croker for years now, not that i've actually eaten any of it in about 6 years - i got some sort of chicken baguetter thing (all they had left) and had to pay about €7 for it, couldn't finish it, disgusting.

The GAA seem to feel that revenue maximisation is their goal, it should be attendance maximisation - if revenue maximisation is required in order to meet costs, they should do what all organisations in similar circumstances do, cut their costs.
They seem to have forgotten the 80's when all ireland finals failed to sell out, and crowds below 20,000 regularly attended all ireland semis, i have a feeling those days are very much on the way back.  Next year will tell a tale, the rental income from croker will be gone and attendances this year have been disastrous, they're going to have wise up, and quickly.

Good post Bogball, spot on in my opinion.

Was in Tullamore yesterday myself, have to say the general consensus amongst people entering the ground was that we were all being ripped off in a big way. €10 for terrace and €15 for stand would have been plenty. As someone said already you would pay less into some English premier league games to see well paid professionals. €25 into a qualifier to watch 2 teams that definitely will not be knocking around in the latter part of september is not on.

GAA should try to remember that it takes a fair bit of money for someone from down to get to tullamore for a start. same with kildare fans going to derry etc.
