GAA Discussion / Re: Tyrone vs Donegal NFL

Bad mistake in the Tyrone defense for Toyes goal. Donegal are winning midfield and Devenney and McFadden are causing big problems for the Tyrone full backs. Let's hope they can continue it in the second, but I'd imagine Harte will be making quite a few changes.

Dublin 0-9 to 0-2 ahead of Cork.

Half-time...

Tyrone 0-9 Donegal 0-6

Tyrone 0-6 to 0-0 up after 12 minutes. Donegal changes in midfield and half-forwards working, to an extent. Still giving away a lot of frees though.

I'd have given a penalty Seanie, but the way he flew down was too much I thought. He actually made a foul look like a dive in my opinion.

I thought the same. Clear penalty from the replay, but he ruined it and influenced the ref's decision with the theatrics. If the ref didn't see the contact clearly, but saw the exaggerated reaction, I can see why he thought Ronaldo dived.

Well lads who'd ye like?

Wouldn't be afraid of any of them myself i think we are more than capable of beating any of those over two legs
It's wide open now with Inter,Real and Barcelona gone

It would be some crack if Liverpool and United got each other at some stage! It doesn't bear thinking about, getting knocked out of the Champions League by United, and, I'm sure, vice versa for them!

In terms of progressing, I would like to avoid United, Valencia and Chelsea, although not one of those sides is a walk over for any other.

Its going to be fun!

Best of luck to McG and his family in what will be a tough time, here's hoping for a full recovery a la Lance Armstrong.

That was my first thought. If it is testicular cancer and they got it early, the outlook is excellent.

I didn't see anything that impressive about it.

I've seen a couple over the years, and I've thought pretty much the same.

Solar eclipses and auroras are far more spectacular, in my opinion.

Apparently Solksjaer was a fanatical Liverpool fan growing up also!

I'm sure both thoroughly enjoyed their late winners against Liverpool though. Solksjaer's one in the 1999 FA Cup was particularly painful, coming a minute after Yorke's last-minute equalizer.

Five years now since Liverpool beat United in the league at Anfield. We've been very goal-shy against United since Owen, Fowler (the first time) and Danny Murphy left.

I was comparing United's form this year to the 1998/1999 treble winning season.

At the end of the 98/99 season United won 22 games, scored 80 goals and the final points total was 79.

At this stage of the current season with 9 games remaining United have already achieved 23 victories, 12 at home and 11 away. They have scored 66 goals and the points total at the moment is 72.

Its amazing that United have won so many games this season but could still lose the title race to Chelsea!!

I don't think this will happen but I thought the figures were interesting.

The gap between the top teams and the rest is getting bigger by the year. Last year Liverpool finished third on 82 points! There was a time when 75 points would guarantee that you were in with a shout up to the last game or two, if not the ultimate winner some years. Not anymore. To win the league now, you probably can't afford to lose more than three or four, whereas six used to the critical number!

Sissoko was surprisingly poor today, even given the fact that his passing often leaves a lot to be desired.

I thought the substitution of Bellamy was a poor enough decision on Benitez's part, as he was doing a good job winning and holding up the ball out on the wings. Easy to say so in hindsight though.

Classic smash and grab from United. You have to hand it to them, they defended well and took the only chance they had. League's over.

That amazes me! I hadn't realised there was such ready acceptance of it - especially among the GAA community. Do you not see it as patronising, big-brotherly, condescending, etc.?

It must be a generation thing - people who have grown up with it accept it. Those of us who witnessed its introduction are almost outraged by it - it feels like throwing in the towel on the whole history of our relationship with Britain, which has seen us insisting that we're equal entities.

Just to throw my tuppence worth in. Everybody I know (prod/taig/unionist/nationalist/whatever) would use the term mainland in everyday speech (not that it would come up that often), in the same way that everybody would use Derry (even the ones who would use Londonderry in a more 'formal' setting). I don't think it's anything to do with political affiliations or big brother syndrome, it's just shothand for the next lump of rock along from us. Most English people talk about the mainland when they mean continental Europe and I'm fairly sure they don't feel any sort of great inferiority complex.

Must be a northern thing (unless its entered common usage in the south in the two years since I left). I've never heard any southerner refer to Britain as the mainland!
