Local GAA Discussion / Re: Fermanagh Football & Hurling

Was anyone at the games on Sunday? Sending off's deserved or not? Shame it always seems to play out that they shoot themselves in the foot

You would think we were some sort of football super power the way they carry on. As you say its the start of the year, and why does these fixtures affect junior football where boys are only out for a bit of craic?

Bit of a joke with the fixtures at the minute, how was this not all discussed before the fixture list was published? There is still some rumours that some games will go ahead, and others scheduled will be postponed
Junior games or any game for adults on a Friday evening at 6:30pm is a joke. You would think they don't want people to play football

Big match tomorrow night, and a very hard one to call.

Lisnaskea are hard to predict and no matter what happens they will be able to hold their heads high, I just wonder if the will to win will be too much and they make mistakes trying too hard

Tempo are hard to judge. They really fell apart last year in the 2nd half against Teemore when they were well in control. Will the expectation be too much for them

Good to hear.  Get players who are 100% committed and ditch the bluffers.

Also after this weekend games i think Leon Carters should be sounded out.
I know he is playing soccer for Ballinamallard but he was immense yesterday for Coa.
Big physical player who is comfortable on the ball.

Thomas Campbell also played well for Tempo at full forward.   Worth a look as well.
Apart from that it was the usual suspects.

Thought Carters was brilliant yesterday but from what I have seen of him that was an exception rather than the norm. If he could put that in every week in league games (as well as championship) he would be county material without a problem

Campbell was excellent at catching and showing yesterday, maybe needs another year or so at club level bulking up? and then he could be a handful.

as you say apart from that it was the usuals

Does anyone have any experience of Heat Recovery Systems in a new build and/or Positive Input Ventilation in an older house?

Being a Fermanagh man I needed to leave it a few days before commenting, as I would be prone to getting emotionally involved when it comes to matches  :P

Keenan deserved to go, it was stupid beyond belief. We seen it from the 21 at the opposite end and said if the ref or umpires seen that he is gone. Simulation, intent, force are all irrelevant he put himself into the situation so we can blame no-one else.
Corrigan in the first 15mins threw himself to the ground a few times and then when he did get fouled the ref wasn't giving it. I have a bit of sympathy with the ref on this (not at the time though) cause I know myself you automatically doubt whether someone is hit if they go to ground with the slightest contact. He has great potential but needs to earn his first few frees before trying to get a few handy ones.
McGrath incident I seen on TV and it should have been a red in the context of the keenan incident. But at the time I didn't see much wrong with it (it was across the pitch) at the time. After that I think McGrath was fairly lucky to be only booked once. He was running about getting involved in petty incidents everywhere rather than playing football
Quigley getting on the field at all was a joke. Hamstring  :-[ . At least say you aren't going to discuss team selection or something like that, but not one person that I know (on the panel or off it) knew about this strain beforehand.
Now that I have that out of the way, the biggest letdown was Canavan. The quigley incident, the daryl didn't deserve to be sent off aftermatch interview and his tactics were all wrong imo. Keenan gave him an excuse I felt he didn't deserve
Bogue and McGovern didn't have great games but we just stuck with them letting their men do damage. McElroy in the forwards was just a way of adding an extra man in midfield but then to name 3 midfielders donnelly, lyons & mcgrath? Corrigan was isolated and had no hope of getting any ball but rather than push killie up with him and let Down choose between 2 or 3 on 2 we pulled everyone back and invited them onto us. The negativity was unbelievable

I have to say that I was really depressed by it all. From the first few minutes we just looked like we were going to try to drag it down into a dogfight. It seemed like he had decided that we would play like Donegal but we don't have the physicality to do it. Down men were handpassing the ball in small spaces (not all that quickly) but being allowed to get the return. I know that might have to do with tiredness etc but we weren't isolating men at all, at any time of the game, we just sheparded them about the pitch (and not very well at that).
The lack of fight was the most depressing (and not the Keenan/McGrath variety), I can accept losing but at least make them work hard for it. I thought that we had decent individual performances but were poor as a unit, similar to the league final

General discussion / Re: Building a house
May 31, 2012, 01:06:32 PM
Am hoping to start building this year, and had a few questions about a lot of the technology out there for heating.

My intention is to have 2no stoves, 1 double sided in the kitchn/living area (open plan) and one in the living room with a back boiler. I seen someone who had ran heating vents from above the stove (that could be opened and shut) to other rooms in the house i.e. bedrooms) which I thought was a good idea.
Solar Panels : Hot Water/PV? Which would be best to get value for money? the roof will be south facing so both should work, its just which will give us best value for the upfront cost
Heat Recovery System : I lke the look of them but who does them that knows what they are talking about? Are they as effective as they make out?
Air Source Heat Pump : Does anyone have experience of these? I was told they were a great job with underfloor heating rather than the stupid looking radiators they supply with them

Any working knowledge of experience of these would be great. The salesmen would have you believe they are all neccessities, but you can't/shouldn't need everything

That Down line up may not be there strongest but then again, why would they need to be.
Sure we are only a wee division 4 team who struggled all year to get promotion.

I like that veiled confidence, unusual for a Fermanagh man.  Methinks you have spent time in Co Down. ;)

Ps:  Heard today from a reliable source that Danny H will start.

spent a couple of years in antrim back in my student days but never down.

believe me its not confidence.
cannot see  seamie playing on Sunday now either.

I had heard a rumour, is the old ways coming back to haunt him?

1. Hard to say. He has looked off the pace in what I have seen of him, but is it a temporary or permanant problem?
2. Agreed, think they have it nailed down at the minute
3. Think McCluskey as well. Everything he does is effortless and looks easier than someone else doing it
4. Think McElroy might get it, but as is already said either one of kelly or mcelroy could slot in at centre half forward or wing half forward respectively
5. I was impressed with the midfield so far. Lyons & Donnelly have height, but lyons adds the strength which is something we have maybe been missing
6. Didn't see the game last night. Hope he finally fulfills the potential he has
7. Little, Keenan and one from point 4 above
8. There are a few lads with a bit of puppy fat running about, hopefully the conditioning work is going to be extensive! Ward looks either brilliant or poor in club & county games, hard to know what to make of his form so far
9. fingers crossed....... thats all I can say

GAA Discussion / Re: McKenna Cup 2012 PowerNI

Didn't get down to the game last night. What was the Fermanagh team?
How did Fermanagh get on in the middle third? It was been something I feel has been overlooked due to our lack of scoring forwards/free taker recently

Quigley has the potential to be a brilliant county player, but it's only the McKenna cup and neither Antrim or Tyrone were playing there best teams. I'd also hazard a guess Tyrone dropped the pace a bit?
He is very talented with his feet but whether he has his head in order is another matter. I would be delighted if he sticks it out til the end of the championship but I'd guess there will be a wobble somewhere. Mcginnity was trying to indulge him I'd guess, and if he was county level fit Rosslea would be unstoppable

Wanderer, I used to work for Sustainable Energy Ireland, ran a scheme for houses getting insulation, so i should know a thing or two. I'd give you the following advice:
Attic insulation, if you can afford it go for at least 200mm attic insulation, one layer between the joists and the next perpendicular to it, don't insults right up to the edge, of the roof, the space is needed for ventilation
Windows - at no stage is it economically viable to change ur windows, the difference between double and triple and even single to triple doesn't stack up, good draft proofing is a big help though and curtains.
Cavity - the problems with cavity were with an older type of bead that seems to hold moisture, I don't know of one installer in Ireland still using these, you should have no problem with moisture build up.
External - preferable to cavity but significantly more expensive, basically enveloping your house. If it was me cavity is what I'd go for.
Ventilation - your house is 30 years old, this is never going to be an issue, air will always get in
Internal insulation - for the hassle I don't think it's worth it, redecorating rooms, cavity isn't awful expensive and is hassle free.

I know a fews lads based in Tyrone, down and Cavan if you wanted more options on price

Cheers Mayo4Sam, would be much appreciated if you gave me details on other installers. Always good to get a few prices

For attic insulation I'm told the QuinnTherm foilback 100mm is similar U values to 200mm of rockwool type insulation? I can get decent price on it through a contact which is why I'm leaning heavily towards it

I'm living in Fermanagh.

I am going to insulate the attic with 100mm Thick foilback insulation as well (hopefully over christmas). It was ridiculous to heat over the cold spell we had and when I'm doing it, I want to make a job of it

The insulated plasterboard is not an easy solution for the house unfortunately. One of the rooms has 3 outside walls, another problem would be a door is hinged against an outside wall with built in wardrobe on the other side, so there would be a fair bit of work to do to get it even ready for the plasterboard. The other question I have wondered about it is, with the bathroom suite being against the wall you couldn't use it in there. Kitchen units would prevent you doing the kitchen, and with the front door it would be intricate trying to do the hall? So really you can only insulate the bedrooms properly?
We are living in the house, so in theory we could move around the rooms while things are being done but really you would want the house as a shell to do it properly and then decorate/re-furb the rooms from there?

I have read about moisture bridging, and scare stories about it but I was wondering If anyone actually knew someone who was affected directly? I keep hearing "I Heard about this fella" etc but haven't known anyone who it has happened too.
Also, it is meant to be guaranteed
"The Cavity Insulation Guarantee Agency provides independent 25 year guarantees for Cavity Wall Insulation fitted by registered installers in the UK and Channel islands."

Folks.
I'm considering getting the Walls of the house pumped to give if a bit more insulation. The house is 30yrs built but is very cold at present.
Has anyone had this done before? Is it a good job? The local installer is Erne insulation, has anyone had any dealings with them

GAA Discussion / Re: God to be Fermanagh's miracle?

I might be in a minority of one here, but I am not that excited about this at all  :-\

The way I look at it is, he can't lose (as previous posters have said).

If he is useless he will be able to blame the players and walk away head held high. He will say that Fermanagh don't have the players. If he is successful in any way he will have one eye on the Tyrone job.

In my opinion he got the job because of his name rather than his managerial credentials, and thats not something I would be overly excited about. Great players are not guaranteed to make great managers IMHO. Of course it helps to get an initial level of respect but the level of respect will change dependant on how he does.

In all honesty a minimum requirement should be promotion in the league, a decent showing in Ulster and a few results in the qualifiers when they get there. Any thing less will be a failure in my eyes
