Anyone hear our Taoiseach on the radio this morning on Radio1 post 8.30

He sounded horrid rough and now the airwaves are hopping with the usual loons texting/tweeting/facebooking/calling in with their disgust and horror.

Fianna Fáil are having a 'think-in' in Galway these past few days so maybe Cowen stayed up beyond 12.30 am.

But if he had a late night could he not have passed on the interview

Following the success of last year's 1911 project the 1901 census will be available to search for all 32 counties tomorrow.

I heard today that Ireland's most versatile and longest serving player, A. N. Other, aka An Duine Eile, passed away recently.

From now on A.N. Other can no longer feature on match programs and fines will be imposed if his remains are exhumed.

May God rest this true Gael's soul.

To say I am confident is like asking the Pope does he defecate in the woods.

I used to think Longford football couldnt get any lower in the 90s, esp after taking some awful beatings by Offaly, Laois, Dublin, yada yada yada.

Now we are ranked just about Kilkenny and London and it doesn't look like it's going to get any better soon. Louth will fancy themselves here for a handy session before a tilt against KIldare.

This is from the Longford GAA website:

Glenn Ryan: 'Morale is good'

Longford boss Glenn Ryan has claimed that spirits are high in the camp ahead of Sunday's Leinster SFC showdown with Louth at O'Moore Park.

Ryan's charges endured a poor league campaign in Division Four which saw them lose five of their eight games, but the Kildare man has pledged that his team enter this summer's championship with a fresh impetus.

"Morale is good," Ryan told the Longford Leader newspaper. "The lads are glad to get the league campaign over and are looking forward to the championship and giving a good performance."

Ryan recently drafted in Meath All-Ireland winner Graham Geraghty to his backroom team as a forwards' coach and he feels it has a had a good effect on the players in the squad.

"He came in a couple of weeks ago. Everybody seems very happy about the whole thing. It's just a different angle and different voice," he said.

Latest team news

Longford could be without ace attackers Brian Kavanagh and Paul Barden for Sunday's Leinster SFC clash with Louth.

Kavanagh did not train at the weekend and also missed Longford's challenge defeat to Roscommon on Tuesday night at Dromard due to what is believed to be a broken bone in his ankle, which could rule him out for up to six weeks.

The news comes as a major blow to manager Glenn Ryan, who recently welcomed back the Kilmacud Crokes sharpshooter from a foot injury which kept him out of Longford's entire National Football League campaign and he now looks almost certain to miss out on his county's provincial campaign too.

The news on Barden is more encouraging for Ryan, as the wing-forward only went off with a niggling injury against the Rossies, but he now faces a race against time to be fit for the Portlaoise showdown.

General discussion / The Cranberries

Has there ever been a worse shower of gimps than The Cranberries?

On another forum I was directed to this link as, on this forum, I have often professed my hatred for the demented warblings of yer wan from Limerick.

Feel free to profess your love for this shower, if that's your wont.

General discussion / Sky Box Question
December 29, 2009, 09:12:18 PM
Have Sky+ here and in ROI we cannot have any of the ITV channels nor BBC3 or 4 or Channel 5 on an XXX basis (where X is a number, like 101).

This means one cannot record to the Sky Box at all. There's lots of stuff on BBC4 I'd like to record for later viewing. (like tonight at 21.20 for instance)

Is there a way I can 'program' the box to make it think I live in Norn Iron or the larger island to the East?

Any advice would be appreciated.

GAA Discussion / Jimmy Magee All Stars
October 27, 2009, 12:28:41 AM
Local rag ran a piece on a visit to my local club of The Jimmy Magee All Stars in 1989.

On Magee's team was, among others, Jack O'Shea, Jimmy, Fr. Brian D'Arcy, Pat Jennings.

I remember the game well (55 yr old then Shamrock Shore Senior 'marked' Jacko for a while) and it was a harmeless bit of fun. Jacko skinned him (for the record). However it may have been a different kettle of fish had the game been in 1960! Jacko would have been prob 5 then and the auld fella would have crushed him.

Anyone else have Jimmy Magee's bus pull into your club?
Who was on the All Star team?

General discussion / Microsoft Outlook question
October 15, 2009, 11:21:31 AM
I've had to change laptops for business and I've more or less transferred over all the necessary stuff from the old laptop.

You know the autofill that kicks in when one starts typing in an email address in Outlook. This is very handy for me. Is there a file that I can copy over that will 'import' the remembered email addresses into the new outlook cos at the moment there are no remembered email addresses.

Thanks in anticipation

General discussion / Horslips ride again
July 01, 2009, 10:11:37 AM
Horslips will play Dublin's O2 on Dec 5 2009 with a gig in Belfast's Odyssey on Dec 3 2009 in their first 'open' gigs since September 12 1980.

Great news for a few auld fellas that inhabit this board (like myself).

The foundation stone of modern Irish music whose self management template was taken by Paul McGuinness and tweaked to make U2 what they are etc...

See you all there. Tickets on sale this day week (9 July 2009)

Wow!

The final is the warm-up before the Dubs take on Westmeath.

Glory days are here again. We won the All-Ireland in 1937 so hopefully we can take a big step Sun week in winning Leinster for the first time since 1953.

The auld fella was on the panel in 53 but got dropped when the Leaving Cert students came back on board.

He's still bitter!

Henry Winkler, Author and The Fonz from TV's Happy Days, will be visiting the school on Friday 22nd May and discussing his books with 4th and 5th class children. He will speak to the children about how he overcame a learning difficulty to become a best-selling author.

How cool is that Mr. C?

Limerick shooting filmed on mobile phone
Monday, 23 March 2009 13:08

Gardaí investigating the death of a man who shot himself in the head in Limerick are now satisfied that the shooting was accidental.

29-year-old Philip Collopy accidentally shot himself with a handgun in a house in St Mary's Park, Limerick, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The shooting was captured on video by a person at the scene with a mobile phone. The phone has since been seized by gardaí.

Gardaí believe Mr Collopy was showing a friend how to kill someone when he put the gun to his own head without realising there was a round in the breach.

There were about seven people in the house at the time.

Members of the armed garda regional support unit were on patrol when a man came running out the house and alerted them to the shooting.

Mr Collopy died in at the Mid Western Regional Hospital at 8.30pm last night.

A post mortem, due to be carried out by the Deputy State Pathologist this afternoon, will confirm the cause of death and establish if he had any drink or drugs taken at the time.

That must have been horrific  :-\

GAA Discussion / Louth v Longford
March 20, 2009, 12:08:03 PM
Lads and Lassies

As it's Lent and I feel I haven't done enough Mattie Hislop penance for my sins I think I'll head to Drogheda for this one.

Can anyone tell me how to get to the grounds, bearing in mind that I will be coming from Dublin on the M1.

Lads

I am thinking of moving from UPC Digital (formerly NTL, formerly Cablelink) to Sky. Will save over 200 lids annually.

Is there any reason ye know of for me not to switch.

General discussion / Blue Screen of Death
October 03, 2008, 11:34:44 PM
My Vista laptop has gone nuts over the past week.

I've had about 20 incidents of the infamous 'Blue Screen of Death' - some within 5 mins of each other.

All after I accepted a big update from Microsoft.

It's a right pain in the swiss!

Anyone else have similar problems?

General discussion / Come inside if you are a Horslips fan
September 13, 2008, 11:46:10 AM
Next Sat night in The Madison in Rathmines in Dublin (Sep 20) there is a party to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of the band's most commercially successful album, The Man Who Built America.

Musical guests on the night will, no doubt, play some classic Horslips numbers, and, with some coaxing, I am sure some of the attending Horslips will get on stage and belt out some notes.

Admission is free. There will be a raffle on the night for Horslips related items (proceeds to Crumlin childrens hosp), t-shirts on sale, sandwiches and caca milis and lots of music and craic and a chance to meet Shamrock Shore!

There - end of shameless plug.
