I had my doubts as well, considering it came from a first time poster, but this from the Independent today suggests there might be some truth. Unless the Independent are using this place as a source again, the fools.

McGeeney to retire

KIERAN McGEENEY may have played his last game for Armagh.

Reports emanating from the county last night claimed that he was set to retire, thus ending the inter-county career of one the best centre-backs of his era.

McGeeney has been a regular on the team since 1992 and reached the pinnacle of a brilliant career when he captained Armagh to their first All-Ireland title in 2002.

He was disappointed last week over the manner in which Paul Grimley was overlooked for the Armagh manager's job following Joe Kernan's departure.

A fine player who captained his county to their first All Ireland.

But if it's true , I'll try now to point out that he's not dead but I've a suspicion that the hand wringing and eulogies will be too much, even for Gaaboard.com

I think Geezer's been playing at senior level since 1989 and, it's a highly impressive record to retire on, at nearly 36 years of age.

Doesn't seem right to wish him a long and happy 'retirement' because I'm sure his contributuon to Armagh county football will continue.

It had to end some time and it appears its now. A sad day for Armagh. Don't think they would have won their All-Ireland without him as a player and more importantly an influence on others.

Anyone with a brain greater than the size of a gnats would realise that the retirement of one of the most influential players of the last 15 years is an item worthy of a seperate thread.

A fantastic servant to Armagh, Ireland, the GPA and GAA in general.

Always loved to watch him play, really wore his heart on his sleeve and gave everything for the cause. if anyone deserved an All-Ireland it was kieran. For him winning was everything and second place was nowhere.

rafasarmy, if you have nothing positive to contribute then stick to ur soccer threads.
i like liverpool as much as the next man but your achieveing nothing coming on here and giving off.

HOW COME EVERYTIME AN ARMAGH/TYRONE PLAYER FARTS OR HAS SOMETHING FOR BREAKFAST THERE HAS TO BE A NEW THREAD STARTED,COULD THIS HAVE NOT BEEN KEPT IN THE LOCAL GAA PAGES?

BUT YET WHENEVER SOMEONE STARTS A NEW SOCCER THREAD ON THE NON GAA SIDE OF THE BOARD THERE IS UPROAR AND POLLS CREATED ABOUT WHY THEY SHOULD BE ALL KEPT IN THE ONE THREAD ETC

KEEP YOUR ARMAGH/TYRONE THREADS IN YOUR'RE OWN OFFICAL PAGES NOBODY ELSE GIVES A f**k WHO YOUR'RE NEW MANAGER IS GOING TO BE OR IF ANOTHER MANAGER DECIDES TO STAY ON OR IF A PLAYER RETIRES

What a ballbag. But with a handle like that its to expected.

McGeeney will be sorely missed by Armagh and deserves all the good wishes I'm sure he will get , great player , great competitor and a great sportsman. He took a lot of stick on this board for his uncompromising appoach to training etc but no one could doubt his application to his craft.

Future Armagh manager no doubt.

Sad to see McGeeney leave the Armagh set up, he's been a great leader for Armagh over the years and a true role model.

Rafasarmy, how come you start spouting off about Armagh and Tyrone people starting up threads?  I didn't see you complaining when threads about Marty Clarke, James McCartan, Martin Farrelly etc were started.  You're just being a p***k >:(

Not the most talented player ever, the man himself reckons not even the most talented in his own family.

But his competitiveness, drive, commitment and the way he dedicated his life to football stands out as an example to all. He was the heartbeat of Armagh's best ever team.

Thanks Geezer.

I think he's the most driven person I've ever seen play the game and he's about as driven a person I've ever seen.

He was a very very good footballer who made the most of what he got and I would say he was as influential on that Armagh team as any single player has ever been on any team.

I think a moment that summed him up for me was in the 2002 final when one of the O'Ses,I think, was making a burst through to get an equaliser. You could just see McGeeney put the head down - Armagh player in his road and all - sprint past the Armagh player and execute a perfect block. There are defining moments in games and to me that was the moment that Armagh won the All Ireland.

Also if he'd been a few years younger I think that Armagh would have beaten Kerry last year. He played the perfect game in the first half and had his engine allowed him I'd have no doubt he'd have done so in the second half too and led them to victory.(I know Armagh were well beat in the end but that's how much influence I think he could have had)

I would echo those sentiments.

Not the greatest skill levels but a competitor to the end. A leader within the Armagh ranks. As the first man to lift Sam in armagh he'll have a special place in peoples thoughts.  Maybe now he'll be able to unload the burden on his shoulders and crack a smile !!

The word 'sad' is being used in a lot of the posts here. I don't think it's particularly sad, it's just one of the finest players of his generation getting out while he's ahead.

I've huge respect for McGeeney, a real role model of a modern GAA player. Best wishes to him and thanks for the entertainment he's given.

I'll always remember he was one of the few - if not the only - Irish player in the last intl rules series that had the strength to push the aussies around.

Probably misuse of the word sad given that he's 36, but nevertheless he'll be sorely missed.

I've no doubts that McDonnell won't be unhappy to see the old guard such as mcgeeney,o'rourke etc drift away so he can stamp his mark on the team unchallenged.

McDonnells plans are possibly medium-long term rebuilding which would not have suited McGeeney etc, who'd probably have preferred one last shot at a 2nd Sam with Grimley using the old tried and tested methods.  For any new manager implementing change isn't easy when the most senior & influential players on the panel might not be 100% behind your plan.

Fantastic player and leader who along with Mcgrane brought Armagh to new levels. The time is right to go, he would have been a milestone around Mcdonnell's neck as a player.

McGeeney quits intercounty scene

McGeeney captained Armagh to the 2002 All-Ireland title
Armagh star Kieran McGeeney has retired from intercounty football.
McGeeney, who inspirational captaincy helped Armagh win the 2002 All-Ireland title, has informed his intercounty colleagues of his decision.

The 35-year-old's decision to step away from the intercounty game is not a major surprise but his absence does signal a new era for Armagh football.

Peter McDonnell has taken over as Armagh manager and the new boss may have to deal with further retirements.

More to follow.

ok, maybe it is time to start believing!!  :(
though the more to follow bit at the end is a bit mysterious!!
either way, i would like to thank 'Geezer' for what he has done for Armagh football over his long and illustrious career, and i am sure we will see him again within the Armagh setup at some stage in the future!!

If only we had 15 mcgeeneys. :o

Its the beginning of a new era and the gratitude owed to McGeeney by armagh football is immeasurable. In my view the single greatest player ever to pull on the armagh county jersey. Lets hope he is involved at some future stage.
Only one man can be the first to lift sam for his county.

speaking of that series, i just remebered the shoulder Geezer planted on your boy in Salthill, perfectly timed and executed, and left your boy in a heap on the ground and McGeeney was then able to gather the ball and play it upfield. Superb!!

I think Grimley got waht he deserved for apparently attempting to undermine Big Joe - Guess what he got undermined himself.  Mc Geeney represents the closure of a fantastic era for Armagh football.  But it was time for him to go, from a source in Armagh he became bigger than the team and the county and tha manager couldnt manage him last year - what hope for a new manager coming in.  He needs to step back for a bit and then test himself as a football manager.  He reminds me a little of Roy Keane in his determination.  Could he manage the same way? I hop he hasnt done it for a huff but I think hes bigger than that.  A class act and a decent honest footballer with great leadership skills.  One of the all time greats I believe. Others should follow - In Armagh Big Joe held onto too many too long - it happens in all counties.

I echo armagh4samagain's sentiments. I found him hard to dislike. The way he carried himself, especially in defeat, was the sign of a true gent. He was the Roy Keane of GAA, without the attitude. I'd say he retires with a heavy heart. McGeeney knew there were 2-3 All-Irelands in his side. I'm sure he looked around him in recent seasons and saw some of the new guns, who were taking success and trophies for granted, not putting in the effort required. That can be very frustrating I'm sure.

In years to come, though, he'll realise what he achieved and be happy with it.

Interesting, could anyone elaborate?

Just like to add my thanks to Geezer for many wonderful days. Armagh would not have reached the heights they did without his presence. I would suggest our greatest player.

Interesting to know what Geezer will do now. Suggestions that he may go back to Mullaghbawn - anyone hear rumours of a return to Armagh at another Club?  :o

Quote from: magpie seanie on September 14, 2007, 09:03:19 AM
It had to end some time and it appears its now. A sad day for Armagh. Don't think they would have won their All-Ireland without him as a player and more importantly an influence on others.

Agree with this on all counts, with the last point here very relevant - Armagh have a lot of young talent, and I would love to have seen Geezer remain in some capacity in the County set up, as he could have instilled in these players the drive, discipline, professionalism and single minded determination that is needed to get to the top. He will leave a huge void.

A great player and a great leader.  He leaves a big void in the Armagh set up but likewise there will be a huge void there in his own life, after 15 years of involvement at county level. One of my best memories of McGeeney is the sideline block he made on Dara O'Cinneide at the start of the second half of the AI final in 2002.  Armagh were 3 or 4 points down and it was a crucial stage were Kerry could have started to pull away. Kieran made a lung busting run to dive at O'Cinneide's feet. I think the modern term for it is 'inches'. Another moment summed McGeeney up during the 2000 semi final replay against Kerry.  It was entering injury time and the game was over for Armagh but McGeeney was still driving on, trying to get something from it and he made another one of those trademark blocks – putting his head where most people wouldn't put their boot. The final whistle blew and Kerry celebrated. Meanwhile McGeeney, in agony with a couple of broken fingers, was being seen to by medical staff.

He'll probably feel that he could have won more than one all-Ireland but at the end up he got to captain his county for their first ever title. How good must it have felt for him to lift that cup!

Thanks and good luck Kieran, I hope to see you back with Armagh some day.

Back in the early/mid nineties, when Armagh was doin nothin in Ulster, but Ulster was rockin it nationally, I watched Mc Geeny in the best railway cup teams that Ulster ever churned out!! When the Grimleys had had their day and Armagh still came up short, Mc geeny was a shinin example of what an individual athlete could do. F@ck manager, F@ck coach, he did it himself!!!! When Dermot Dougan got the better of him in '98 he came back in'99 an' showed 'Dougie' what he was made of!! What an Athlete? What a sportsman? All the best to him and his!!!!

I just talked to a great mate of his that used to play with him on the county team and this move to Kildare is far from a done deal at this point.

I think Kildare are in division one his year stew.

i was holding off on McGeeney's playing obituary in the hope that peter McDonnell would have the good sense to persuade geezer to play on but given the management rumours it would seem thats out of the question now.

McGeeney was the heartbeat of the armagh team from well before the glory years. nothing more can be said about the professionalism of the man and the sacrafices he made personaly for the cause. in 2002 he was a man possessed and his defiant form of defending would inspire water to get up and walk.

the greatest centre back of his generation and a great leader of men. thanks for the memories kieran.

There was a nice piece in the Star about his decision to retire - seems like he didn't want to go at all but Armagh's decision to shaft Grimley meant that he had to go. Such a shame that he has left a bitter man.

Former Armagh captain Kieran McGeeney is expected to become an inter-county manager by taking charge of Kildare.
McGeeney has met the Lilywhites' county board and it is understood he will be unveiled after chairman Syl Merrins rubberstamps the appointment.

The vacancy arose as John Crofton resigned after Kildare were beaten by Louth in the All-Ireland qualifiers.

McGeeney was an Armagh stalwart for 15 years and was captain of the team which won the All-Ireland in 2002.

Former Derry boss Mickey Moran was another considered for the Kildare post but it is believed McGeeney is the first choice of county board.

It is not known if former Armagh selector Paul Grimley would be part of McGeeney's management team.

Boylan picked him as captain of the International rules, so theres a history, the two must have linked well if the rumour is true.

The source was one of the main sponsors of the county team while Grimely was there who has now withdrawn his sponsorship and is considering giving it to Kildare. so the source is reliable enough.
but then again time will tell  ;)

If that is the team in place, Geezer, Grimley and Boylan, I think they will do a good job. How would Meath folk react to Boylan (after so many great years) taking someone else?

Given the intense club competition in Kildare it wil be a great move bringing some one of McGennys experience in . Kildare are down at the momement but it is a County really in need of a boost in terms of its Senior team .

Sean Boylan owes Meath nothing so anyone who says otherwise isn't worth worrying about.

QuoteI've heard that Paul Grimely will be joining McGeeny as will the surprise packet sean Boylan the former Meath manager who will be coming on board as a consultant type role!

Does this remind anyone of the Ireland soccer set up with Staunton and Bobby Robson?  Either give McGeeney the chance on his own to see if he is the man for the job or he isn't.   I've yet to see any of these 'Dream Team' set-ups work and they usually end in farce.  Could be a case of Geezer himself not thinking he has it and the Kildare county board trying to convince him by drafting in Boylan as back-up.

I'd say it's not likely Sean Boylan would ruin his reputation by going to Kildare!!!
