Title: Can I get a UK passport?
Post by: Shamrock Shore on December 22, 2011, 11:24:42 AM
Now - it's not that I want one. I am just curious.

All 4 grandparents born between 1890 and 1905. Long before partition etc. None born in what became the '6 counties'

Both parents born pre 1937. Again both born in Eire/Free State/26 counties. So pre Constitution and declaration of Republic in 1948.

If I wanted to peg my Irish passport in the bin would I qualify for a UK one?

Only if your parents took up their right to a U.K. passport, if they never took up this right, you no longer have the right to British citizenship.

I think if you are in Fine Gael you are entitled to one also.

Afraid not, going by the rules you quoted above I would not be entitled to a brit passport. However, I'm impressed you were looking into it. Did you manage to get one yourself? I think your fellow county man and party man Michael ring was also trying for one. You might be able to help him out.

Once again MGHU demonstrates his deep-seeded partitionism. Believing Ulster has only six counties? He could find himself with a job as chief headline writer for the Belfast Telegraph if he's not careful. They seem to have it in their contract that "Ulster" (in the six county sense) must appear in around 90% of front page headlines, so MGHU is the man for the task.

Nally - I think he was just trying to get the rise out of me (or at least I hope he was) although I was once called a foreign bastard in Castlebar once and told to go home to my own country so you know maybe its a Mayo thing?

I think it's not just Mayo. It seems to be Galway too. Went there a few years back. Sober as a judge and got turned away from two bars in one night upon showing my ID. One of those bars I got the same response you did..."f**k off back to your own country", the other the doorman just explained awfully politely that they didn't want "nordies" about.

Considering how frequently you denigrate the south as the Free State, do you not see a hint of irony or hypocrisy in this?

Hypocricy?! Ah right so if that happened you on a night out, you would come away feeling a newfound love for the 26 would you? Ever stop to think that maybe it was experiences like that which led me to be a critic of partitionism in the 26 counties?!

You constantly display a belittling, inversely snobbish attitude to people from the South, yet when the reverse happens you you're up in arms over it. Wise up.

In fairness NS pubs in Galway city are notorious for (or were anyhows) refusing entry for any old reason.................. wouldn't really put it down to your accent/ place of birth. I have made my views known on Galway city in previous threads.

Yes Myles you got it re the Ulster thing, Nally is far too sensitive. Re the f**k off back to your own country, I think they meant East of the Shannon.

Met a moaning git like you at a Mayo V Tyrone match in Healy Park. Before I go on, the operation up there is amazing, the people are lovely, the hospitality second to none. Well I had the unfortunate experience of sitting beside a middle aged woman who turned to me and out of nowhere started telling me how bad they had it all these years and ya wouldn't know the hardships, to which I told her, "it couldn't be as bad as the rain we have to put up with in Mayo". The sniggering of the Mayo crowd around soon shut her up. Other than that Healy Park, I love visiting for games.

Wise up.

Again, if that happened you on a night out, you would come away feeling a newfound love for the 26? I'd say if it happened you, you'd be p****d off and would scoff at someone telling you to wise up.

As for telling me I'm snobbish?!! Bit rich?!

In fairness, a good retort :D

In fairness NS pubs in Galway city are notorious for (or were anyhows) refusing entry for any old reason.................. wouldn't really put it down to your accent/ place of birth. I have made my views known on Galway city in previous threads.

I wouldn't be in any rush back anyway!!

Galway has another feather in its bow to boast about.
Mixed metaphors re. strings, caps etc. or else you're referring to a feather boa ;)

Ha ha, very good, feather in your cap, string in your bow. Must pay attention in class.

Yes Myles you got it re the Ulster thing, Nally is far too sensitive. Re the f**k off back to your own country, I think they meant East of the Shannon.

For a self-proclaimed anti-partitionist, you seem awfully smug and about your fellow provincialmen telling a Tyrone man he is a "nordie" who should go back to his own country. I'd have thought you'd be absolutely disgusted at such behaviour. Ahhh wait, I forgot about the whole FF I mean FG thing you have going on. (Sorry, yet again I'm mixing up FF and their identical twin, FG).

Exact same attitude? I've never referred to the free state as a seperate country, just as a 26 county part of my own country. If I ever tell someone from the 26 to "fcuk off back to their own country" and that they are not welcome in the six counties, maybe then you could accuse me of hypocricy. Til then, wind yer neck in.

I suggest you get your mental health evaluated in the New Year Nally, you really are one flew over the cuckoos nest.

Let me guess Nally you where drunkenly singing "take it down from the mast Irish traitors" & were calling anyone who would listen a "Free State bollix". Does that sound familiar, I am pretty sure thats how your night was going. I bet you went into the Kingshead and demanded that its should be renamed the Martin McGuinness 32 county one true socialist republicanmartyrhead.

You become a bigger Tool by the day Nally. Obviously you know f**k all about the West, there is an general ambivalence towards non-Connacht counties and a tolleration of Clare.

Well my initial post referred to the door staff telling me I was a "nordie". Do they call anyone from east of the Shannon "nordies" and routinely tell them to "fcuk off back to their own country"?

Knowing fine well that they don't, I may repeat my question:

Is it right for someone from Galway to tell someone from the six counties to "fcuk off back to their own country"?

I suggest you get your mental health evaluated in the New Year Nally, you really are one flew over the cuckoos nest.

Let me guess Nally you where drunkenly singing "take it down from the mast Irish traitors" & were calling anyone who would listen a "Free State bollix". Does that sound familiar, I am pretty sure thats how your night was going. I bet you went into the Kingshead and demanded that its should be renamed the Martin McGuinness 32 county one true socialist republicanmartyrhead.

No, I was with a group of friends trying to get into any pub we could, to get our first pint. Sorry to disappoint you. So I shall ask you yet again:

Is it right for someone from Galway to tell someone from the six counties to "fcuk off back to their own country"?

Nally - I think he was just trying to get the rise out of me (or at least I hope he was) although I was once called a foreign b**tard in Castlebar once and told to go home to my own country so you know maybe its a Mayo thing?

You are some feckn eejit Nally, has the North recently annexed all lands East of the Shannon. Wah, wah, wah, again you ignore what people actually write and let it be a moan for poor oppressed Nally.

Crude!, so bloody what? Not an attempt at humour, something I have began to wonder about Nally over the last while. Yes I have, did I talk about children with Autism? No I did not.

Yes I know its only Wiki, I not going to bother looking harder at this time of night on New Years Eve/Morning

"Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior"

Nally - just ignore that clown. The comments on Autism are a disgrace and sums him up completely for me. I'm done "debating" with him.

Your parents would be eligible for British passports as they could apply to become British subjects (but not British citizens) due to being born in the now ROI prior to 1948 - however you wouldn't have access to any form of British nationality.
