Got bad news there.......
Have to work
27th 28th and 29th of December
As well as come in on 3rd of Jan which was also a holiday.
Technically I am off:
26TH Dec
30th Dec
2nd of Jan
Three days is not enough to celebrate the birth of our Lord.
First Christmas in new home as well and recently married.
People of the forum...feel sorry for me or at least let me hear tales for your broken Christmas.
You're making a meel of it. My wife is working Christmas and St Boxing day.
Laid off 2 weeks ago :(
put that in your pipe...
More time off than me or my other half. My parents rarely got Christmas day off together as they both were nurses, got a half day if they were lucky.
get over it.

Knew this would be the response.
Regardless of that, this is hateful news, none of you (whether with a job or not) would want to work over this period. Christmas is for family. Work all year lock of days off at the end of it is nice.
Also on a side note, I don't believe in the lack of jobs talk. There are plenty of jobs out there, people are just very smug and wouldn't accept a job 'below' them. £6.08 is minimum wage- 40 hour week= £243.20 before tax and NI. Good enough wage in my opinion.

I am going to negoiate this. I am going to ask for the 23rd off.
That way I will have four days in a row off 23rd 24th (sat) Our Lords Day (sun) 26th (mon)

Will work 28th
Will try to negoiate the 29th off as well.
That way I am only working ONE day more than normal but just still being accomadating.
Wish me luck. But going by the rest of the posts the rest of you are just haters.

I remember having to work Stephens Day one year from 8am - travelling back up from Offaly to Dublin on Christmas night into a cold, lonely house was quare depressing - and then the car broke down on the way. I will admit I felt fairly sorry for myself then all right.
But what you've described there is hardly that bad - you still have all the main days off. I'd say there would be a lot of medical/security/retail people that would swap with you.

Drink will be consumed in the new house during the day. Out of the tiles that night. I plan to return to the house at some point. I will be celebrating the birth of Our Lord on the allocated day of the celebration. I attend mass on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I exchange in the giving of gifts which is a symbol of the gifts that are brought to the crib. I got the wife GHD's I think this is relevant.

But you said three days wasn't enough to celebrate the birth of Jesus - by what you've just said there, you only need two, which you are not working on anyway.
But hey, I'm enjoying this thread.
Ps if only recently married, ffs don't be just giving her GHDs for Christmas, make sure there's a nice meaningful pressie in there (and I don't mean expensive). If I get GHDs I'll be very unhappy - to me it's like buying me an iron or a hoover.

Seriously? I thought I was home in a boat there. What do you suggest? I was going to get her a couple of other wee things like. Nothing expenses. GHD's were the expensive thing. F**k.
Really does she not have a set already? I'm being too personal maybe on this, but I buy my own GHDs when I need them, ie when the set I am using burn out. Unless she's dropped mega hints?

She had a pair with her sister. Her Sister went to college and took the GHD's. The wife and I are now living together a few months. No Straighteners. She hasn't had a Good Hair Day (GHD) since leaving home. I felt sorry for her. She says things like 'If only I had a pair of straighters, in this new house with a new hubby, my life would be fulfilled'. I got the message.

G.H.D's are the global phenomenon of an iron for the hair. They apparently are no better than any other hair straightner on the market but there global advertising campaign has led the female species to believe these are the fo shissle. This won't be the only HOT STICK she will be playing with this Christmas!!! I also got her a new poker for our fire. Classy.

I've never had to work at Christmas, usually stashing holidays and pouncing when they become available. But that's because I have to. Christmas invariably involves times with the in-laws. Now, this isn't as stressful as it used to be. I've become a better actor which reduces tension at all levels. But there'll always be at last one volcanic eruption from either my mother-in-law or brother-in-law which leaves a sour taste. Then I get home to find out that people spent three days sitting on the arses in work because things are usually quiet in workplaces during the holidays. I'd really rather have the time off in the summer time when the weather is high and you can stretch right up and touch the sky.

You have me worried now Rois that going all out on a dishwasher isn't going to cut it this year.
WTF is GHD?

Not that size anyway. Don't usually have that many, my uncle died this year so we thought it would be nice for all the family to meet as it's not often this happens anymore.

Please stop taking the CHRIST out of Christmas.
Surely you know, that the Greek letter X (chi) is the first letter of the Greek word for Christ, Xristos ( Χριστός). Xmas therefore means "Christ's Mass." The letter chi is written the same as the Roman letter X. So, as a form of shorthand, some people replace "Christ" with the first letter of his Greek name, X.
The word "Christ" and its compounds, including "Christmas", have been abbreviated in English for at least the past 1,000 years, long before the modern "Xmas" was commonly used. "Christ" was often written as "XP" or "Xt"; there are references in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as far back as AD 1021.
I'm surprised that one who needs so much time to celebrate the birth of XP doesn't know this.

That, is very interesting. I didn't know that. I will bring this up with my local priest.
This Sunday is the first Sunday in Advent. I remember when we were serving on the alter, one of my mates lit the middle white candle on the first Sunday in Advent. Til this day he still gets abuse about it. He will receive a text message this weekend also.

As stated in a previous post on this thread, I have a low level of intelligence. Low. If I think a word sounds right I will use it, I will not check if the word:
Makes Sense
Is Real
Or, is spelt right
I am comfortable with this and hope you can be as well.
I would love to have the traumagh ;) of just 13 days off. You must be blessed with the intelligence that would allow you to be a teacher.
My Granda died on Christmas Day in 2004 as well. We were just sitting down to dinner when the news came through. I like to be at home a lot for Christmas because of this. Time for family you know. Time to be spiritual. Probably should be just thankful to have any time off, unlike Doctors, Nurses and g*y male nurses. Going to ask can I have the 23rd off as the wife seemed happy enough with that. The 23rd is the day we go out for the Company Christmas dinner anyway, We usually only work til about 1.

Bollocks, 99% of the people who use Xmas don't know about this Greek shit, they use X to secularise it.
What ASAP, is that secularised or what. No doubt some people use Xmas for that, but the vast majority write Xmas as its shorthand. I havent met anyone who actually says Xmas!

The 28th is also a bank holiday in the North. Therefore I may not have to work the 27th. Confused? You should be.
Won't know until later.
I bet you can't wait.

I confirmed with a telephone call to Ulster Bank that it is indeed a BANK HOLIDAY in the North.
They showed me great sympathy about my current situation and even sent me email evidence that it is a Bank Holiday. I will submit this to my boss together with the report as to why I shouldn't be working. Included in the report is:
A handwritten letter from my Wife
A conversation dialogue between my Granny and Myself when I told her the news
A detailed graph of my lack of motivation and productivity over the holiday period
A TV guide, the shows that I really wanted to watch highlighted
I can hope. If I have nothing, I have hope.

Hmmmmmm, you continue to believe that little myth. Sure it's all the Brits fault too.
In fairness people may not understand the abbreviation or the Greek Shit as you put it; but it also doesn't mean they are proactively secularizing the word Christmas either. Ah imagine the irony if your little myth was actually true.

The halidays are only marginally worse in the silly service. I'm quitting on the 21st and back on the 3rd of Jan. It'll have to do.

Are they hiding you in a storeroom til the inspection passes?
Afraid not, cheeky cnut ;)
I've 6 different classes per day!! Very busy important man :D
This will be my 3rd in 9 years
Good luck with the inspection. They've definitely stepped up the intensity. We had one not so long ago and they missed nothing. They'll rummage through your manbag and ask to explain every piece of paper from scribbles to a wine bottle label. They'll follow you out to your car and then ask to see the insides of your motor. Hide the betting slips. They'll comment on your dress-wear - where you bought it, how much and how old it is. They'll sit beside you at lunch and watch how you eat your food and what you eat. They'll comment on your aftershave. They'll surprise you in the corridor and ask you to spell words like niece or pizza.
Then they check you, professionally.

Yeah, it really doesn't bother me, majority of the kids are grand, classes last no more than an hour and the Inspector is an ex shipyard apprentice who was a year above me when I started there.
Another bonus is that Translink are on strike this Wednesday ;D one day less to worry about
Terrible Christmases in 96, 97 and 98. My da had a habit of heading for a feed of pints in the Forresters before the dinner. Always brought at least 1 straggler home with him so there was less turkey and stuffing for the rest of us.
Go to the in-laws now so it's all good. Only thing is they've a couple of rules:
- No brown sauce on the table. (I smuggle in a couple of sachets)
- Everyone gets the same dinner. Mightn't sound bad but when I'm handed a plate with carrot and parsnips on it I puke in my own mouth.
- Running joke that I don't like pavalova.
Other than that, it's great and surely beats the 3 year bad run in the late 90's.

Every year are dinner is delayed due to the fact that some of the family are in the pub.
Its a usual tradition around our house to, go to Christmas Eve Mass, come home for a turkey toastie and then into the town for a drink or three. Home and tucked up in new jammies around 12.
who do you think will go out of Christ-Factor tonight? i think Janet is in trouble.

Try heading out at 8 Christmas night in the freezing cold and milking the cows, handling water that's below zero, the only way of warming up the hands is hoping some yoke of a heifer kicks the hands off you.

Now on revised days I am still in a net of 2 extra days from the original holidays and I'm 'happy'.

I'm off from the 23rd to the 28th inclusive. The original plan was to stay in Liverpool until the New Year, so I'm having to fly back on the 28th. Then again, the original plan was to be unemployed . . .
Humbug.
Off from this Friday until Monday 19th (heading to Florida and NYC), back to work for four days (though have offer of going to Lapland on Wed 21st), office Christmas "lunch" on Fri 23rd, then not back til Tues 3rd.
