Trump did the right thing in this case under the circumstances. You can't have people bring turfed out on the street all over the place in a pandemic with massive job losses because they suddenly can't pay their rent through no fault of their own.

And yes, such maximum sentences are threatening, but that's the purpose of deterrence. It's going to be struck down anyway before it expires, so hopefully the states finally get their acts together with the rental aid for the sake of both the tenants and landlords. And the renters will still owe the back-rent.

Fun fact: Texas A&M university, for years, mandated that anyone attending had to have a meningitis vaccine. This was uncontroversial. Nobody batted an eyelid. It never made the news. People just complied because it was the common sense thing to do.

But now that there's a vaccine for Covid, which is much more transmissible than meningitis, they're not requiring it. It's "voluntary."

This is what happens when conservatives politicize every aspect of people's lives. Everything has to be framed in the culture wars, even if it's going to get people killed, and people like the administrators at TAMU feel the need to capitulate to the terror tactics of the conservatives.
