Is that tomorrow then??? Good Luck to the Peter's lads anyway although I'm sure they'll get past it easy having beaten Oisin's the other night. I fancy Mitchels to come through the second semi final to set up the big game. Also fancy a Peter's Mitchells Lancashire county final later in the year as well!

GAA Discussion / Hop Ball From a Free Kick
June 19, 2007, 03:06:46 PM
Was involved in a match at the weekend in England where the referee made some very debatable decisions regarding the Free Kick situation.

On 4 separate occasions the referee hopped the ball from a free kick in scoreable positions. Whilst during the match he would not divulge as to why he had done this, we were later informed that it was because the free takers had 'bounced the ball before taking the kick'. You can imagine the uproar from one of the camps as to this suggestion  as it can be clearly seen from any number of televised games on a Sunday that there are many High Profile free takers e.g. Padraig Joyce, Paddy Bradley, have a routine where they bounce the ball before taking a free kick for a score. Can anyone clarify the ruling on this as it would serve to help the argument currently going on over on the Hoganstand website.

Thanks in advance.

Happens in our club too! I remember we won a reserve c'ship a few years back with half the team just out of minors and the other half of boys just out of seniors... first c'ship in a long time for the club and we had to listen to "Huh, if it wasn't for the old boys helping youse out you'd be nothing!!" WTF is that supposed to mean... it's like saying to a Kerry player "If it wasn't for that Gooch Cooper youse would win no All Ireland"

It kills some men to give credit where it's due. It makes me sick sometimes! A simple well done is hardly going to cause god to strike these men down with lightening!

I would like to agree with you Lynchbhoy but I think that Mark has lost whatever it was he had during his minor days in the CHB role. In fairness he has played there a few times for Derry and hasn't impressed. He was pretty awful last year against Longford.

Along with this I think he is probably the most potent example in todays game of player burnout... County Minor footballer from Under 16... hurling and football for club from underage up to senior, hurling and football for county up to U21, Senior county football, College's hurling and footballl... Sigerson football.

What I saw on Sunday was a laboured performance from him where he looked to be struggling during the 2nd half, fitness wise. I don't know what the solution to this should be but I think that CHB against Monaghan isn't it.

I had this on another thread but it's probably best for here. It is my best possible Derry team for the Championship. WHile I know it is not the team we will have out for Monaghan I would hope that this would be the team that will line out for us at some stage...

Gillis - Hasn't done anything to suggest he shouldn't start.
McGuckin - Will he be available for the next match? I hope so because we are struggling here. If not I think McEldowney should get a run out here the next day as McGoldrick had a shocker last week and its probably a bit too early for him at this stage to make the step up.
McCloy - Commanding on the edge of the square but will struggle with pace if McGuckin and Lockhart aren't around.
Lockhart - Has to be in here to do a man to man job on Freeman.
GO'K - The man is a half back... end of.
Patsy Bradley - Has the presence and the strength, distribution may be a problem but I think he's worth a go.
McKeever - Not sure about him yet but he is a good ball carrier and I've heard good things about him.
Doc & Conway - Blossoming into a great partnership... who'd have thought it when these 2 were minors!!!
Lynch - Good long range scorer and hasn't the pace for the inside, also an option for kickouts as well, he has to be played here.
Gilligan - Great distributor and playmaker, usually a reliable long range point taker as well. Let's hope his 2nd half form from the Antrim game stays.
Diver - A tower of strength against Antrim, he was immense and hopefully does the same against Monaghan.
P Bradley - (Remember this is an 'ideal' team) No question
Muldoon - When fit he's a class act!
E Bradley - Given his recent form for Glenullin he has to be getting a game I just hope that whatever is going on between him and Cr
ozier can get resolved. Any word of his suspension yet?

I know that there is a strong possibility that McGuckin and the 2 Bradleys will be unavailable but I think that the team I've named above is without question the best we could put out and I hope we can see it in the c'ship this year becasue it is a team that would be very difficult to beat! If we don't have the 3 lads I would go with McEldowney in CB and Collie Devlin CF. To be honest I am actually at a loss as to who we should put in the other corner... we don't have anyone else good enough!

Give me Enda Muldoon every time! Muldoon has all the same attributes as Donaghy only he's more likely to get you points as well. Unfotunately Muldoon's fitness this last few years has let him down but I think he's proven over the years (With a hugely weaker team than Kerry) that he is class through and through. Remember his goal against Galway in the AISF? What about his 1-6 against Westmeath in the 2003 AIQF? Does anyone know if Donaghy ever scored 1-6 before?

I'm not saying Donaghy's a bad player of course he's good and last year showed it. However it was his first year and it is difficult to compare him and Muldoon properly when Muldoon has been playing and producing since the late 90's.

So in conclusion I think if Muldoon played for Kerry we would be talking about one of the all time greats. As it is he has still won an awful lot as a footballer and is definitely one of Derry's best ever players. I think that if Derry can get the right team out this year and barring injury Muldoon can show us all once again what he is capable of!

Quoteplus various live matches through the season.

When were these on Sammy? Can't believe I missed them! What with me being an avid GAA follower and all I wouldn't usually miss an opportunity to watch a match on the TV... hang on that's right, there's barely 1 per year. Yes that's right the most supported game in Northern Ireland and they show 1 paltry live game a year... Fantastic!

Couldn't argue too much with your ratings SS2 but to say he doesn't convince like Kieran Donaghy in that rule is ludicrous. When fit, Enda Muldoon is better than DOnaghy in that role simply because he can do everything Donaghy does but he'll kick you 4 or 5 points from play as well. As shown on countless occasions like the goal in the AISF against Galway 2001 and in 2005 against Westmeath. Remember that last year was Donaghy's rookie season.

As for the rest I would wholeheartedly agree, although I think that while Gilligan has yet to prove himself at this level, his club form shows he is capable of doing it and I hope that his 2nd half performance will help spur him on to greater things further on in the year.

Judging from those ratings I would say that our FB line has now become our weak link in the team. McCLoy is susceptible to pace, GO'K isn't a corner back and I think it's too soon for McGoldrick to make the step up to this level. I think the sooner we get McGuckin back and move Lockhart in there the better we will be.

In an ideal world I would pick the following Derry team for the next day!

Gillis - Hasn't done anything to suggest he shouldn't start.
McGuckin - Will he be available for the next match? I hope so because we are struggling here. If not I think McEldowney should get a run out here the next day as he couldn't be any worse than McGoldrick.
Let's hope his 2nd half form stays.
Diver - A tower of strength against Antrim although I have to disagree with SS2, that one handed bounce that takes him 6 steps is definitely a foul on the ball. Apart from that he was immense and hopefully does the same against Monaghan.
P Bradley - (Remember this is an 'ideal' team) No question
Muldoon - When fit he's a class act!
E Bradley - Given his recent form for Glenullin he has to be getting a game I just hope that whatever is going on between him and Crozier can get resolved.

Mesmerising episode! Did anyone else find it strange that once Susan found out Karl was the father she asked him about consummating their marriage? Something major is definitely on the cards.

Unfortunately I can't see Susan believing that what actually happened was true i.e. Karl was that high he actually thought he was riding Susan and not Izzy. It will make interesting viewing over the next week anyway!

Still didn't get a chance to watch the game the other night as the laptop played up on me and crashed when the match it was on. I was not a happy camper.

Anyway for anyone who hasn't got a chance to watch it yet TG4 have it on their WebTV archive if you click into the site:

www.tg4.tv/channels/sportarchive.aspx#

I'll get a chance to watch it over the nest few days and give an opinion.

Right I have to bite now even though I know LB is doing this to wind me up!

It's Ballinascreen! When talking about GAA it's Ballinascreen, the locals call it Ballinascreen, calling it Draperstown is akin to calling this thread the Down v Londonderry thread.

RRBF - I'd keep it quiet about the draperstown thing...
Just keep shaving between yer toes and say nothing...

Well LB do you want some of my left over toe hair for your head ;)

As for the game I don't remember too much of it to be honest. I was under the scoreboard so got a good view of yer man's goal which was a cracker in fairness. In all honesty I seem to draw a blank from that era when I think of all our big defeats... 91 v Down, 92 v Donegal and the '94 against Down, even though I was at them all. Thank God I wasn't at the '95 Tyrone game otherwise I think my brain might have turned to mush.

Lookin' forward to watching this game tonight. It was on Setanta when I was down in Dublin but I was living with some English hoor who when I explained the importance  of this game "Being the greatest in its era" he turned the feckin TV over to some Animal Planet shite! I'll definitely not miss it this time.
