GAA Discussion / Backs Vs Forwards
March 01, 2012, 01:29:39 PM
With football evolving more and more as time goes on in terms of skill and ability (personal opinion anyway), have the old views that defenders can't shoot and forwards can't tackle been completely removed from our game. Can players now generally play in a host of different positions ranging from 2 to 15 and still be as affective in each?

And for a bit of craic, would a list of the top 15 defenders in Ireland beat the top 15 forwards.

Example match up could be:

........................................................S Cluxton..............................................................

MO Se.....B Brogan...................N McGee.....A Moran........................M. Foley.....C Cooper

K Cassidy.....P Flynn.................K Lacey.....A Brogan......................K Nolan.....D O'Sullivan

................................................T O Se.....M Murphy.......................................................

............................................J McMahon.....D Connelly....................................................

T Mortimer.....D Hughes...............A Kernan.....C McFadden..................K Young.....E Bradley

P Harte.....P Galvin......................D Gordan.....D O'Connor......................K Dyas.....J Clarke

..........................................................B Kealey.............................................................

not saying that these are best players in our game obviously. just tried to pick players who might do well in these positions.

In light of Crossmaglen's championship win on sunday and with a margin of 25 points, I was wondering has there been any other final where the teams have been separated by such a large margin at the final whistle?

I'm not sure what the biggest was in Down and I can find a list of previous results on our county website but I remember Mayobridge gave Annaclone a bit of a beatin in the championship final in 2005 (?).

GAA Discussion / Long Journeys For Club Games
October 14, 2011, 11:30:53 AM
Was reading the Kerry Championship thread and seen a few lads comment on distances travelled for club games.

In Down the greatest Distance would probably be Warrenpoint to Portaferry, which is about 40 miles apart but requires a ferry crossing. if the ferry was off then it would be about 65 miles. Now these teams would rarley play each other, so taking into consideration teams that regularly compete the greatest distance would probably be Ardglass to Glenn which is about 38 Miles.

So I was wondering what would be the greatest distance two teams in the same county would have to travel to play each other?

And, would anything come close to that of Cork clubs Allihies to Youghal which are 190km apart?
