Have people changed their minds since the election?

Nordies shouldn't really vote here but I suspect we will be able to guess if they do.

I'd imagine it's because they couldn't vote in a general election and therefore any Nordies voting on this poll would be skew the result and not quite a fair reflection of how real votes might tally.

If you have always lived in the North you probably can't vote in the south. However asking some people not to vote on this board is like asking Cyril Farrell not to say 'as such', as such.

I think he's referring to a possible swing in the SF which wasn't seen in the last two elections.

Claire Daly knocked on the door once and couldn't answer the most simple questions on taxation, she's a waste of space that knows how to be a bit mouthy on rights for workers at airport and f**k all else

I didn't say she was any good.  She will be talking about what people want to hear i.e. the broad brush stroke that people may or not buy into.

I'd say Bertie/Cowen/Kenny/Gilmore could have answered all those questions about Taxation etc. People will want to give a bloody nose to the politicians and it will depend on the quality of people she is up against.

Trevor Sargent is in that constituency and it will depend on how people think he is doing as part of this government whether he gets back.

I don't think there be an election soon anyway. but can we put up Socialists in the poll?

What is the lasting legacy of the cetic tiger? two luas lines that do not link up? everything else that was given (ie education, over 70s medical card) - all being taken back. the question is where is the money gone?

and i think you will find that bad government has led us to this, upto 25% work in construction with house prices rising 400%, while also having 13% working in the civil service. i think bad government has got us here!!!!

I think there are some basic examples which include keeping wages and inflation down. the housing market should have been controlled and development should have been planned and not have the urban mess/sprawl that we have now. Also with all the billions we should have build a lasting legacy to improve the long term standard of living while also improving infrastructure to enhance future economic growth!

I personally think even one 6 month rainbow/Fine Gael government in the last 15 years would have helped, just to keep everyone on their toes.

Ultimately this country repeatedly voted for the property bubble and will now have to live with it's legacy.

It is ironic that while some posters here attack the likes of the public service and trade unions they then attack any possibility of competition in governments. We end up with the type of inconsistent permanent ruling body that they claim the public service is.

P.S. Socialist option added as requested.

They left us in a position akin to Iceland imo, whilst the whole world is in recession, it's my guess that we'll be in it for the forseeable future.  But, FF aren't entirely to blame, people get the govt they want and FF of all parties give the people what they want, to the extent of changing policy based on newspaper surveys.

I think a change of Government would be good.

Personally I voted "Independent" as I hope a Marian Harkin/Council for the West type candidate is available as we are getting totally shit on up here in the North West and I think electing 2 or 3 independents is the only way to get anything. One independent in 2 or 3 of the constituencies must surely be a possibility. We were majorly pissed off the the Govt well before the Budget over the Cancer Services sellout. FF are in for a hiding in this region.

Not jumping to Tankie's defense, as we all know he is well able to defend himself, but while no country have avoided the effects of the current global problems, some have minimised them through prudent government - Norway/Sweden/Finland would be the usual examples. On the other hand it helps to have sizeable natural resources as those countries do.At the same time I don't think it could be argued the Fianna Fail led governments made any efforts to reign in our property bubble, in fact encouraged it, when the one lesson history has taught us is all bubbles burst eventually. Again you could argue the reasons for that, the main one being that all politics is local politics in this country, and that the only people who vote are homeowners (by and large). However over the 15 years I have seen no effort on FF behalf to alter that either.

How is it possible for people to say at this stage whom they would vote for? No election has been called, therefore no party has issued a manifesto; no alliances have been announced; the potential alternative governments are unknown.  What would you be supporting by giving your vote to FF, FG, Labour, Greens, etc? For all that you who voted SF know, they could be coming out with a manifesto to leave the EU, as a reaction to the lack of respect shown to our referendum decision and join the British Commonwealth to ally ourselves with a powerful economic bloc in these difficult economic times.

Its goin to be 1982 all over again I tells ya!!
The Greens are going to pull the plug because they are such a principled party and we will have a snap election before Christmas.
Now that it has been proven that Capitalism was just a failed experiment, there will be a massive swing to the left. We will end up with a coalition of Labour, SF, Joe Higgins (sorry, I mean the socialist party) and Finian Mc Grath will be the power broker and get himself the position of Finance Minister in a move that puts Tony Gregory's exploits in the halpenny place!

Socialism, its the only way forward!

We got them in 2002, nothing happened, for all Harkin's bluster. Don't think they can make any impact, bar the odd exception ('97 granted, and Tom Foxe did his bit for Roscommon hospital way back when).

And Socialism is a no-no IMO, though it's even worse with liberalism attached.

I know we disagree on Harkin - personally I think she is good but not very politically savvy. What my point is about is if we have 2/3/4 like minded candidates between Sligo/Leitrim/Roscommon/Mayo they would be a more powerful group. Perhaps they should form a new political party. I know Cowley was in in 2002 as well but unfortunately FF had too many. That won't be the case for a long time to come. Outside of that I really don't what else we can do.

Surely it's their right to vote shinner if they want, it wouldn't be any worse than a ff vote.
I also think we'll have an election in the next year, but tbh I also think there's feck all any party can do to get us out of this mess at present.
As for independents, I know what yo're saying seanie, but imo they're a large part of the problem this country has - the fact that they can hold govts to ransom  over some nonsense issue like a new lampost and public phone for Bellmullet is ridiculous - but again, we get what we vote for.

I have no problem with people voting for anyone once they take the time to read about that party or policy, but generally this is not the case!

Well this poll is meaningless now that all the Nordies have showed up to vote SF.
There's not a chance in hell they'd get that percentage in the south - as if anyone would trust them to turn the economy around.

i'll second that, but they could do well as there are some very dumb people that are allowed to vote!

You pretentious git!  ::)

Someone doesn't vote for your chosen party/parties, therefore their "dumb"... Hmmmmmm... irony.

Who do you trust to turn the economy around? Seriously though ??? ??? ???

The strangest things are happening. Most of what SF have been asking for for years is being demanded of the Government now from those who said SF were mad.

No i said people can vote for who they want but if lisbon thought us anything it proved that there are allot of people who should not have the right to vote as they couldnt even be bothered to read what they were voting for!

It is undeniably debatable whether the vote of someone who hasn't bothered to acquaint himself with the issues but chooses to express an uninformed opinion at the ballot box anyway should carry as much weight as that of the informed voter.

Perhaps there should be an exam to qualify as a voter. At least cover the basics. A few multiple choice box ticks about the main policy positions of the parties, or something like that. Otherwise you get government by ignorance and misunderstanding.

but democracy also works on the assumption that people value their vote and feel proud of the fact they can vote.

Why stop there?

Why don't we put an election manifesto for each party together without sayig which party it is from and get the public to vote on manifesto number one, two, three etc. No advertisements, or public speaking. We know some people vote for people because they met them or their poster is the best or their catchy slogan made them laugh or he is a member of an established family etc. It often has litlle to do with policy. Anyone who hasn't read the manifestos probanly won't vote making Tankie happy and returning a Government from an informed electorate.

I agree and have said it for years. Surely you should have a minimum level of knowledge before you get to vote. People call me a fascist for having this view. I don't understand why.

In theory every TD should be independent but the tightness of our party political system actually constricts democracy. The party political system in this country is clearly failing the people and serving those who shout the loudest.

I also think you overstate the case regarding govts being held to randsom over small local issues. In my opinion it doesn't happen nearly enough and is hugely overplayed on the rare occasions it does to help ensure no repeat.

In the last referendum it didn't work but the truth is that the bigger partys need the uninformed to get elected much of the time.

Protest votes are often well informed. It's the ones who vote for the guy who bought them a pint 2 weeks before the election that are the worry.

It could be sooner than you think with the Greens Education Spokeperson saying it is possible.

http://www.rte.ie/news/2008/1030/budgeteducation.html

Comments from a Green Party TD about a possible pull-out from Government have caused controversy.

The comments came in a communication by the party's education spokesman.

Last night the Opposition claimed the party was facing oblivion over its stance on education cuts.

AdvertisementThe official position of the Greens has been that they are in government for the long haul even if in the short term they are seeking changes in the education cuts.

But remarks in email correspondence from education spokesman Paul Gogarty, seen by RTÉ, go a little further.

Mr Gogarty tells a lobbyist against the cuts that the Greens may eventually have to pull out of Government on this or combined issues.

However, he says it is not going to happen until the party has exhausted all avenues.

An official spokesman for the Greens said last night the comments were totally consistent with the party's position.

Last night in the Dáil Brian Hayes of Fine Gael claimed the Greens' stance meant they were facing a political Stalingrad from which there was no return.

The Dáil debate on a Labour Party motion critical of the education cuts resumes later this morning.

Who determines when someone is well enough informed? Who provides the education that would allow someone to be well enough informed? I am not saying you are fascist but the idea that you have to pass some test or the other or prove you are educated to a certain level is wide open for political abuse. The amount of people out there canvasing that don't even know their own parties policies is ridiculous, I think the parties themselves could do with educating their members before the poor punter on the street get his/her vote taken away.

As for the green pulling out of government - not a hope. That would require balls of which they are sadly lacking.
