Title: Cork v Tipperary
Post by: homeofhurling8 on June 03, 2008, 02:05:22 PM
I reckon the meeting of the Gaa's oldest rivals deserve a thread of its own(with the right heading ;)

Until the teams are named its difficult to analyse this in any depth but a few quick points to get it started..

This is the fittest, most focused, happiest Tipp panel since 02,the hungriest since 01,whatever else we lack we wont lack passion on Sunday.

Training has been a joy to watch,no two sessions the same, when a team has been training since November variation is important,O'Sheas drills are very innovative.

Tipp still dont have a half forward line, what we do have is a plan B,having a plan B(and a keeper willing to embrace it) on puckouts won Cork two All-Irelands in recent years.

Stress fractures started to appear in the Cork backline last year, have they healed a year on ?

If Cork are to stop the cats winning three in a row they need at least two of Naughton,Cronin,Ronan and O'Sullivan junior to step up to the plate this year to take some of the scoring burden off of the O'Connors and Deane.

The blood is rising already and its only Tuesday.

Looking froward to this one. Tipp have come on a bit but we all know the league counts for nothing at this time of year. Its great to have games like this on TV. For people like myself at the far end of the country travelling to Cork isn't really an option.  A Sunday afternoon, a good crowd and some great hurling does loads to promote the game outside Munster.

Tipp will need to get a good return from Lar Corbett for them to win as Eoin Kelly's usual haul mightn'd be enough. I have been impressed by O'Neill and Murphy in the cork corners, so will the rock eventually get the skinning which he to his credit has avoided in any big games to date yet has been prophecied every time he takes the field!!

cork mightn'ed be sure of their starting forwards but they've few weakness's up to midfield. Tipp as a team are vastly improved from last year with a greater resilience and belief in themselves than for a long time. I can't see either going into the game half hearted, so roll on sunday..

Indeed I always enjoy the rhetoric surrounding this fixture.  ;D
GMB previews have always been superb in setting the scene.
To be fair, Tipp vs Cork in the qualifiers just doesn't catch the imagination, there is certainly something special about a Munster clash between the two counties.
No disrespect, if last year's match was an Munster clash, I don't think Cork would have been caught.

Any thoughts on the suggestion of Gardiner playing centre back and Curran wing back?
I'm not sure of what the Tipp starting 15 will be, but I don't think they have a proven half forward line.
I think Woodlock would be a definite starter. I presume Ryan O'Dwyer too?...who I don't think you could aim puckouts at.

Lar Corbett's pace could be the secret weapon on Sunday.
I think the Rock could be skinned by a pacy player who manages to get some sort of decent ball in to him. A big if, of course.
What are the chances of Tipp resorting to a bullocking full forward like Webster on the day?

It is one to look forward to and always great to see a packed house in the early championship.

Cark team for sunday boy..

Cork (SH v Tipperary): D Og Cusack; S O Neill, D O Sullivan, B Murphy; J Gardiner, R Curran, S Og O hAilpin; J O Connor, T.Kenny; B O Connor, K Canty, T McCarthy; P O Sullivan, P Cronin, C Naughton.

Curran is back in centre back and if he's back to his best Lar mightn'd get enough good ball to trouble the rock. That's a raw enough full forward line, mightn'd get much change out of a good Tipp defence!!

That's the sort of team I was expecting Cork to field. That's a strong half back line again, and the battle between themselves and Tipps hard working, but limited half forward line will be crucial. As will the Ben O'Connor, Canty and Timmy McCarthy axis against The Tipp half back line, which is strong itself. Niall McCarthy was a very game workhorse for Cork, and did a lot of stuff which may not have been appreciated, so his absence could also be significant there.

The full forward line is raw, but they are good hurlers. Naughton as been threatening for a good while, and is a speed merchant. Tipp would want to make sure he doesn't get turned and running at goals. The Rock's younger brother is supposed to be a good lad as well, so it'll be interesting.

Corks experienced Midfield of Kenny and Jerry O'Connor should be able to keep a handle on Tipp there, where Shane McGrath has been a revelation in the league.

Seeing that team now, and cogniscent of the job O'Neill, O'Sullivan and Murphy will have against Tipp's full forward line, I think Cork will win this game.

Thats an interesting forward line named by McCarthy, not a lot of experience there apart from O'Connor and Timmy Mac,I would have expected Cronin to start on Corcoran given the scutching he gave him for 20 minutes in Thurles last year.

Tipp name the team tomorrow night,i doubt there will be many changes from the league campaign but i believe Festy Kerwick could be at left half forward with Woodlock moving to centrefield alongside McGrath,in a full training match behind closed doors in Thurles last weel the "A" team lined out with a half forward line of Kerwick,Fanning and Butler, make of that what you will !

I think O'Sullivan is a weak spot and if Tipp can exploit it they can get goals. I'm surprised he's still on the panel but good full backs are hard to find. Cork half back line is v strong and they'd be wanting to bye pass them if they can. Impossible to call this one though. Home advantage may just swing it for Cork.

Foireann Tiobraid Arainn (in aghaidh Corcaigh)

1. Brendan Cummins (Ballybacon-Grange)

2. Eamonn Buckley (Drom & Inch)
3. Paul Curran (Mullinahone)
4. Connor O'Brien (Annacarty)

5. Eamonn Corcoran (JK Brackens)
6. Conor O'Mahoney (Newport)
7. Shane Maher (Burgess)

8. James Woodlock (Drom & Inch)
9. Shane McGrath (Ballinahinch)

10. Seamus Butler (Drom & Inch)
11. Seamus Callinan (Drom & Inch)
12. Ryan O'Dwyer (Cashel King Cormacs)

13. Eoin Kelly (Mullinahone)
14. Lar Corbett (Thurles Sarsfields)
15. Wille Ryan (Toomevara)

As I look at the team, a random thought strikes me. How many counties in the country would have zero representatives from the county champions on the team? It must be rare enough, but there are no Loughmore/Castleiney lads on the first 15. Also, with 4 representatives, Drom & Inch must be going very well. Even Traditional teams like Sarsfields, Toomevara and Cashel King Cormacs are very lightly represented.

Cork v. Tipperary
Two of the biggest hurling teams in the country clash at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday and what a contest is in store for all hurling fans. Many believe that this could be Tipp's year as they could well be the team to break Cork and Kerry's dominance of the last six years.

Lads what was the story with the corwd spilling out onto the pitch. Marty Munchkin was making light of it on the coverage but it looked potentially dangerous. Was it late comers? Too many let into the terrace. Heard the stadium announcer telling people there was lots of room at the back of the terrace. Looked like quick actions on behalf of the Gards and stewards saved us from potential disaster.

That must be the end of the road for this Cork team.

Fair play to Tipp. I saw a picture of Eoin Kelly on the RTE website
and it reminded me of something Babs said last year about the Tipperary jersey and how important it is, not for any year in particular but as an institution.

The housing market may be banjaxed but there will always be Tipp Cork matches.  It is hard to believe it was so long since the previous Tipp win in Cork.

Cork bet and plenty of time yet to save the hay.

It is a pity Babs is out of management -  I love his soundbites.

1)  Is it too late for Cork to go to the Labour Court?

2)  The spill on to the pitch seems to have been caused by all terrace tickets being the same colour and too many fans going to the wrong end.  Could have had fatal consequences and somebodys head should roll - much more serious then players strikes etc.

I don't think so. The Rock looks past it, the half back line is still very solid, although Gardiners point taking wasn't as sharp as it has been in the past. Midfield still has alot to offer, but the new forwards introduced do not appear to be at the requisite level for chamionship fare. Naughton was superb, but that's as far as it goes. Personally, I don't think Cork have the players to mount a serious challenge this year. Kilkenny would murder them on todays performace. The Cork forwards got plenty of the ball, which they won't get against Kilkenny. Still depending on the same old players and remind me a bit of the Deise, their old foes, men on borrowed time. The debutante Cork corner back, Shane O'Neill did very well.

Corks tactics backfired, over elaboration of the hand passing and aimless long balls into Pa Cronin, who seemed to spend most of the game bumping into Teddy Mac, I thought their white helmets held some sort of polar magnetism.

Much to do down lee-side way.

Fair play to Tipp, young hugry side with plenty of room for improvement. Onwards and upwards for these guys.

Cork had a period of dominance in the second half where they should of put on 2-5 or more to the scoreboard. They had Tipp on the rack. Fair play to the Tipp lads in the last 10 minutes, they took all their chances. Still thought that Cork should of taken their chances and won.

Cork were 7/8 points up after 25 minutes and seemed to lie down after it - I agree that the Rock is on the wane and needs replaced ( although he has given great service to Cork ) - Cork aren't finished and had enough possession to win the game yesterday but failed to convert.

An improving Tipp took a long time to put away a bad Cork one who spent a lot of time running with the ball - love to see Kevin Cashman's face at those tactics, given his 'jennet express' comments of years gone by!

You would think Cork will still be about at the end of the year but when OHailpin, Gardiner were interviewed after the game im not sure they had the stomach for the qualifiers. They had enough chances to win two games but the forwards were terrible bar Naughton who didnt play as an orthodox forward. Five of the starting six got the hook and Mc Carthy came on and went off.Yesterday was a template for other tems on how to play O Sullivan, low accurate ball into Corbett, he isnt mobile enough for a sharp, mobile FF.

cork aren't an overly old team, i'd of thought. The twins must be 27-29, Tom Kenny, Curran, O'Hailpin, Nial McCarthy ditto. Gardiner isn't that old either, but maybe the miles on the clock are taking their toll. In all fairness they had Tipp on the rack in the first half until Tipp sent the corner back out to follow Naughton and a superb strike by Eoin Kelly to bring Tipp back within striking distance. Their forwards do seem to take a lot of space to get their striking in barring young Paudie O'Sullivan who showed glimpses that he's a handy enough tool.

If they can get the fitness and scoring boots on via the qualifiers then they'll pose problems for most later on in the year.

A few quick observations.

To beat Cork by six points on their own patch without playing particularly well is no mean feat, this team can play significantly better than we did yesterday.

The game was won and lost on the sideline,Cork were slow to make the necessary changes in attack and when they finally did they ended up bringing off Timmy Mac who had Corcoran in all sorts of trouble, and giving Joe Deane 5 minutes, bizarre! Sheedy and co were also very slow to deal with the Naughton situation but the introduction of Kerwick and Webster worked well,Benny less so.

Kelly took eight steps for his goal which was the turning point but what a finish !

I cant see us winning an All-Ireland with Corcoran and Shane Maher as the wing backs, one of them maybe but not both,Corcoran was obviously not at full fitness but his looseness will cost us yet,Maher needs a lot of room to strike and doesn't have the ability to make that room for himself, having said that he is teak tough and good under the dropping ball so its not all bad news,Tom Stapelton or even Fanning could well be the answer with Corcoran moving to centrefield.

Shane McGrath is a hardy bit of stuff,he needs a partner,Woodlock aint the answer,he is too poor a decision maker and an average/poor striker of the ball.Hugh Moloney should partner McGrath in the Munster final.

Ryan O'Dwyer is too limited for this level of hurling,Festy Kerwick will start on the 13th July alongside Callinan and Butler.

I wouldn't swap Paul Curran for any other full back in the country, having an all star as back up aint half bad either.

Conor O'Brien had a fine debut as did Callinan who will wear the number 11 for many years to come, his ball to Kelly for the goal was a thing of beauty.

Lar is becoming as important to us as the boy wonder, with the right ball there are goals in that duo,we will have to say a few rosaries for Lars hamstrings between now and July ;)

Fair play to Webster,he is as game as the day is long,he offers us a different option,Loughmores run last year was the making of him.

Babs was right ;),Eoin Kelly is a stone and a half lighter this year than last,Cummins has learned to vary his puckouts.

Lots done,lots to do.

While I was impressed by Tipp I felt Cork threw this one away.

I'd agree with some of what HOH said. I felt one of the Tipp boys - I think it's the no. 7 you refer to - was far too one sided. The FB,CHB and no 4 were good though but I feel they will have to work on their handling as they did drop a few balls.  I felt that Eoin Kelly fumbled a lot of balls too.The FF line that started can be superb with the right ball in. They got far too much high ball in though but Webster looks a man who could be a very useful asset for them in that regard. The no. 11 was good for Tipp as well - Curran didn't feature too much and the Kerwick guy who came on didn't let Gardiner away with what the first boy did so this influenced the game greatly. Lar Corbett has always threatened massive games - that's the biggest c'ship one I've seen him have.

Cork can and will improve I feel. There's a lot of talk of the demise of the Rock here but I think he was carrying an injury and to be fair that's been threatening to happen him for years too. He'll be back. Forward line needs serious sorting out too. I don't think Cronin despite his height is a FF but can be accomodated in the HF line. They seem to not have replaced BC or Joe Deane for that matter though whether he needs to be replaced remains to be seen. If they reshape the forward line then I don't think many teams - Kilkenny maybe Galway(and obviously Tipp) aside - could beat them. I hope this game brings Tipp on though and they can challenge KK. I think they're a bit short yet but maybe match practise in the summer time will bring them on a lot.

I was home for the club final and am looking forward to watching Joe Canning.

It is good to see Tipp beating Cork  but at the end of the day they have to be good enough
to put it up to the Cats. Anything but another Cork or KK all-Ireland this year le cunamh De.

Fair play to Tipp. They hung in there when it looked like Cork were going to run away with it in the first half. The last 15 minutes the Cork legs just looked shot. Not sure whether it's down to a lack of fitness after starting later than everyone else or the fact that some of their top players have been on the go now since 1999 and have a lot of milage in their legs. The pebble especially seems yards off the pace these days so much so that even Eugene Cloonan apparently had him in all sorts of bother in a recent challenge game and Eugene is no pace merchant like Lar Corbett.  Even their famed half-back line is not performing to the standard of old. Hard to get all three of them playing well on the same day anymore. Cork though would have felt that a one point lead at half-time was scant reward for the dominance they had. Tipp must have been delighted going in at the break.

That said Cork they were hardly helped by their own sideline yesterday. Taking off Timmy Mac when he was making a nuisance of himself to the Tipp defence and then introducing Joe Deane with 5 minutes to go when they're 5 points down. Not much time to work a miracle there. Indeed the forward line had a bit of a raw look about it even beforehand.

Tipp must be the main contenders now for Kilkenny's crown. They'll surely win Munster and then we'll have to wait and see who comes though the qualifiers to meet themselves and the cats. Cork and Waterford looking vulnerable these days but will get a chance to regroup.

Galway out of action now for a while but picking up injuries while they're at it. Kevin Hynes broke his jaw over the weekend and is out for the Summer apparently.

Not exactly a long way. They only have to win one more game and I don't see Clare or Limerick beating them.
