He took Clonduff to the Down SFC title in 2000 when they beat Liatroim. Obviously this year he's got Longstone to the Final and as said previously if he wins that he will be held in iconic status.
He led a Level 1 coaching course that I did a few years back and I have to say I was very impressed by him. He seems to have quite a modern outlook and if I remember rightly he is a big stats man. I found him pretty dead on to be honest.
Whoever takes the job will have to struggle with a small pool of players. An ability to be good at man management is essential in getting the most out of a team with few exceptional individuals. Thats one thing you have to give Charlie Mulgrew credit for.
Fermanagh would need to have deep pockets if they're gonna employ Dawson - the reason why he moves from club to club (just as Carryduff). He was eventually chased from Bellaghy though not sure why, perhaps the Derry posters could enlighten us. I have seen Longstone three times this year and my lasting memory is of Dawson standing, attempting to keep his considerable girth under control, with arms outstretched above his head in a Y position, bawling at referees. Anyone going to the game should watch out for this tomorrow.

Didn't say anything bad Southdown, this time. I really hope you win tomorrow because I know the passion you have for football in the 'stone. I just have no time for your manager, as you know, and after hearing how he got rid of Cheetah and Hugh Trainor during the year, just adds to my dislike of him. These two men have been staunch stone men over the years and I would have thought they should have gotten more backing from the club rather than a mercenary like Dawson.

I would agree with you there Cloc Mor, but I would say the club would have stood up more for these two men had the team been doing badly. The club has huge faith in Frank and at present it seems justified.
An outsider managing a club and getting a few quid? Who would have thought......

I tried to get the discussion going on the Fermanagh thread but there isn't that many of us on here so it's better to discuss it here. Personally i think it's time we tried a manager from within the county, with Malachy O'Rourke bring my personal choice. Would Dawson know any of the Fermanagh boys? I wouldn't have thought so and with the standard of the current team I think we need someone who can try and unearth a few new faces from within a small selection and only a local man can do that IMO.
More faith in a man who has been there for 2 years as opposed to 2 men who have given a lifetime of playing, service, committment, dedication and who have extolled the virtures of a club exemplified by the example of Ambrose. Its was a sad day when Longstone took Dawson's side.
Not much debate on Fermanagh thread as none of us have ever really heard of him I think. Don't like the sound of the reports on here though, but why is he constantly referred to in the papers as "the highly-regarded coach/ex-coach of...."?

The county board will go for O'Rourke if he wants it ExiledGael, and as i've said we need a local man IMO. O'Rourke has been very quiet, a good or bad thing?
I think it's a good thing from his own point of view.
O'Rourke wouldn't even discuss the matter with anyone publicly until Cavan Gaels had won the club championship. They won last Sunday and by all accounts he met the county board during the week. Looks from the outside as if this is what has been holding the whole process up from the start and the county board were willing to look a little silly and bide their time until the man they wanted would become available.
The county board actually deserve credit if this turns out to be the case, as they've been getting a hard time from all corners, especially Bradley in the Herald.
Hope it ends happily now and O'Rourke is willing to take the job

Yeah it's not that long until the McKenna cup and i think O'Rourke teaching in Enniskillen will have a much better insight into club football than Frank Dawson could ever have. With Belcoo hammering Teemore today I think a few of their players could get a chance next season.
Hope so we need an injection of new talent from somewhere

I really hope Malachy O'Rourke gets the job. As mentioned by Gaeil InisCeithleann he'll know Fermanagh club football very well and he'll probably be able to get the best out of our limited resources. I was really pleased to see Belcoo win the league today. They're a very young side and they play a very attractive brand of football although I'm not sure if any of their players are ready for intercounty football just yet.

Yeah ExiledGael, my source is very reliable. Malachy O'Rourke is the new Fermanagh manager, players told tonight as far as I know.
seems like a solid choice that should be accepted by fans and players alike. Probably the first player from the Ferm teams of the 90's and beyond to be given the job and its hard to beat having a local man in charge. Division 3 will not be easy though. I'd settle for an Ulster Championship though! lol
An Ulster Championship, the Holy Grail for all Fermanagh fans. Will we ever win one? I'd settle for promotion as well this year, the players simply aren't there to win the Anglo Celt.
If McCluskey, McCabe and Stevie Maguire came back next year it would help.

Looks good. Some people hide behind the fact that we've not got the talent required but I totally disagree. This is arguably the most talented team we've ever had, as our results in the last five years show. I'm quite optimistic under O'Rourke that we will give it as big a push as possible. There's nothing wrong with keepers or defence, just a reliable partner for McGrath at midfield and a few scoring forwards to nail down and we can really compete.
Fair play to the county board for holding out and getting their man at last.
What changed O'Rourkes opinion, from my sources he had turned the offer down, and it had nothting to do with family/work committments?
O'Rourke will do a good job and is highly rated everywhere he has been. However he has got a very tough opener against Monaghan. Best chance would again to appear to be through back door
