Hi lads a tough one, up in Derry, looking forward to it, never in Derry City before. Fair play to the Oakleaf in their victory over Armagh.
derry will take mayo if it is played in that hellhole fortress celtic park. was only it once back in 92 and will never set foot in it again. hope they decide the venue is not up to scratch and play it somewhere like breffni - that is mayos only chance.

Or Dr.Hyde ;D
I wouldn't say thats Mayos only chance, we no gaw-daws either.
Lads its this very moment that the Green & Red CarniVal needs to organise the troops & bring in the Legions of Green & Red up North and show them the power of the Mayo support.
What time and when is it on,i would go.Armagh gone now and derry are a good enough side but Mayo would be better.D Brady was nuts when called ashore, exactly what we need, lads tearing to play.By the way Fishead sam has it right, we are no daws and if we bring enough support we can beat derry and have a good night up north.
Big big win for Derry today against the mighty Armagh. Mayo got past Cavan conseeding 3 goals and with a dodgy defence will not relish the prospect of high ball coming into Muldoon and buddies in the Derry full line.
Will be very interesting to see the Mayo team selection for this. Liam O'Malley is no full back, refusing to attack high ball coming in and allowing Sean Brady, the Cavan FF, win every ball coming in. Aidan Higgins was poor on saturday. Kilcullen at CB ? Didn't impress. Trevor Mortimer did very well at 7. Can Gardiner defend at all ? Too early for McGarrity for a full 70 minutes.
Would expect a tight match and hopefully the home fixture for Derry will not be the difference.
Mayo have nobody to blame for any tough draw or trip, but themselves after their performance against Galway. Sligo's win today, shows that due to our lack of physicality v galway, we were beaten out the gate.
there are no easy games left for Mayo, as if they win next week, will play either Cork, Galway, Laois(Dublin) and Monaghan (Tyrone) a week from Sunday.
Were there any positives from a mayo standpoint yesterday, The manner in which they won can be alll that bad, as Cavan Levelled the game with 20 mins to go. Will Macdonald be able to play any part, what solutions do we have for Backs, Howley has not impressed me at all, seems we are crying out for a full-back line.
I think we have very big defensive worries at the moment, neither David Kilcullen or Liam O'Malley where at the races the last day, Higgins was very average & we didn't see much of Gardiner because he was taken off early, is Pat Harte back from suspecion yet because that opens up the option of having him at midfield, then alowing Heaney to drop back & hopefully James Kilcullen might be given another chance.
Now we're in the manure business!! Hopefully its not time to get off the pot yet though.
I don't think we could have asked for a harder draw but it is what we needed. Lose and there is no point in going further. Win and things could open up. The teams left are quite average except for Kerry, Tyrone, Cork and Dublin who look streets ahead of everyone else.
The big worry is the full-back line and unless immediate action is take (and it will be of the band-aid variety) a thrashing could be on the cards especially if it is Muldoon and Bradley up front. Keith Higgins is a huge loss, and Liam O'Malley is not up to it at this level. After some dodgy league performances, a roasting against Galway, he got the mother and father of the run-around against Cavan. The only option appears to be to put Heaney at the edge of the square. Jimmy Nallen may be an option as is Kilcullen. We have very few options though. Felt sorry for David Kilcullen on Saturday everything seemed to go wrong for him.
The only reason Gardiner was taken off was because he was borderline being sent off and that is because he cannot tackle. I don't expect him to start the next day.
Reckon the team will be along these lines:
Clarke
O'Malley
Heaney
Howley
Mortimer
Cunniffe
Kilcullen
Brady
Nallen
Harte
Hanley
Dillon
Mort
Moran B
Moran A
As Fishhead Sam said its time for the Mayo fans to stand up and be counted and turn out in numbers and support the lads. They need it now more than ever.

How can you say that celticpark is not up to scratch? it is a fine venue. Home draw is a BIG help to derry. im looking forward to the game. And with Muldoon to comebackafter a bout off flu id be hopeful of getting the win. Lockhart will hopefully marshall conor mortimer.

Tom Cunniffe, he was centre back on the U-21 team this year and last year. He came on the last day.
Derry away is the toughest draw we could have got but just the type of test we need at this stage. I'd be very worried about our full back line, Trevor Howley was the only one to hold his own the last day. Need Higgins back quick. Derry look to have a lively number 13 and if you add in Muldoon and Bradley then we are in trouble.
Based on the last day Kilcullen is not the answer at centre back. He gave away an awful lot of possession the last day which you can't do at this level.
I have a wedding on Saturday so I wonder what are the chances of it being shown on TV or will it be the Cork V Tipp game that they show?
QuoteI have a wedding on Saturday so I wonder what are the chances of it being shown on TV or will it be the Cork V Tipp game that they show?
Well they showed a hurling qualifier last Saturday so presumably its the turn of a football qualifier and Derry v Mayo is the obvious choice. At least heres hoping cos i have spent a couple of hours thinking of the logistics of how i can fit that into next weekend but haven't come up with an answer yet :(
http://www.rte.ie/tv/thesundaygame/sundaygame.html
I think like last year the Full back line is paying the price of some of the problems at midfield. Cavan cleaned mayo at midfield yesterday hand had a choioce of forwrds to pass to so in that regard mayo did quiet well only to concede 10 scores as oppsed to scoring 20 themselves. defensively we were non existant at 6,8,9 this makes it very tough to heap toomuch blame on the full back line. though what Good arussell and donaghy would hacve done with sevice fro ose osullivan and brosnan i shudder to think. and thats the stadards we have to measure ourselves against.
Mulddon is a scary prospect in full full though he does seem to blow abit hot and cold
It'd better be on tv, cos I don't think I'll be allowed up for it. But I can't see any other match having the same appeal - unless RTE decide that it'd be easier/cheaper to take an outside broadcast unit to Newbridge or Navan than Celtic Park (well they're still trying to cope with the loss of revenue that Mayo's favourite daughter cost them) ;)

I wouldn't be as worried about Muldoon as I would be about Bradley - Bradley if fit and matchfit is as good as there is in the country, consistently - Muldoon as you say can blow hot or cold - but he's due a good one again!!

It's simple - jump in a car, point it North and start driving - less of the excuses....
Good win on Saturday. Was always going to be the sort of game it was - pretty open with a reasonable challenge from Cavan but Mayo always just having enough to pull through.
JOM tried a few new things with the team....some came off, others didn't. The Barry Moran experiment was a success. While he fumbled some, miss read others, importantly we were able to finally contest for high ball in our full forward line and a few scores came from breaking ball in there. When was the last time we saw Mayo wining a clean high ball in the FF line? Most important though it gave the Mayo forward division way more structure than it has had in a long time.
Thought Hanley had a superb debut - what more could anyone expect from an 18 year old playing his first senior match? 2 points on the run from play and generally showing very well for the ball. Thought he only messed up one ball.
Kilcullen, while I don't want to be critical of a young fellow, was a disaster and I thought it was very risky on JOM's part to leave him on. He messed up every ball some way or other.
We have to bight the bullet in the backs. I think Liam O'Malley is a class player but its too much to ask him to fill the FB role given his height and build. I have said it previously and still think we should play David Brady at Full Back. He can not give it 70 mins in midfield, so I think he could at full back. Dropping Heaney back every time we are facing a stiff test is not the solution. Brady is quite rough around the edges for and maybe could be fairly easily turned, but we desperately need a commanding, aggressive man around the square. Heaney is the obvious choice for CHB - funny his natural position but never gets the chance to play there! Harte and McGarrity for midfield whenever McGarrity is up to starting. Mcd at No.10 and given instructions on positioning!
My championship team would be:
Clarke
O'Malley D Brady T Howley
T Mortimer D Heaney P Gardiner
P Harte R McGarrity
C McDonald P Hanley A Dillion
C Mortimer B Moran A Moran
(Obviously subject to McGarrity / McDonald being available / fit)
the reason id be more afraid of Muldoon is because (famous last words ) we have lots of backs i feel could handle bradley but its muldoons type we really stuggle against and i think he mas potentially has alot more class. bradley is more of a fats mans Connor mortimer. ::)
This is what we face. Doesn't look too bad. Any of the Derry lads have directions parking tips etc?
Maybe the County Board will give some thoughts to the trips Mickey Moran faced last year on their way up on Saturday.
Maradonna, I'd be firmly opposed to any efforts to play Brady at full-back. He's just not a good enough footballer. As I see it the options are O'Malley, Nallen, Kilcullen or Heaney. And really it should be the latter.
Harte will be a big addition. The game on Saturday had to help McGarrity but he is way off the pace. Its just great to see him back though.
I think speed is the way to go against Derry and for all his flaws it may be a day for Gardiner despite what I said above.

I'd have to agree with everything that has been already said about the match on Sat. night. A couple of observation i have is that when Jimmy Nallen and Ger Brady came on they seem to steady the ship.I thought our full back line got a bit of a lift when Nallen and played well for the final 10\or 15 mins. I thnik we need a bit of experience in that back 6 because we were very in-experienced and at times all over the place. I have been in the past been one of the biggest critics of Ger Brady, but i must admit he brought a bit of direction to the half forwards when he came on.He did as is customary, turn over the first ball and over carried on the second but overall was good. Saturday night however has proved that David Brady is no longer a 70 minute midfielder..the legs aren't up to it. As for Derry, a good test of our aspirations for the rest of the year, i think however we have nothing to fear and we have an excellent bench for the final 10-15 minutes of any game. Sort out the full back line, with Jimmy Nallen at full back to weather the early storm that we will be hit with, Pat Harte at mid-field with Ronan, with David Brady ready to come in at Full back or mid-field depending on how the game is going. I dont know what Mayo support will be there but its a venue i havent been to before and am looking forward to it.
If Gardiner Heaney and Mortimer are picked as half back line it'll be game over, far far far too attacking, leaving our already vulnerable full back line isolated! Surely not!

You might get away with it if you played a 3'rd Midfielder such as Barry Moran to give support, but then you are abandoning the Big Full Forward Option.

Lads, our options are limited in the half back line, the players wil have to be told in no uncertain terms to stay in a defensive mode. But also our forwards starting with no 15 will have to get the tackles in on any backs that are coming out. That is something we are guilty of not doing for quite sometime.

it'll all be well and good if we dominated mid field, but that wont happern, even playing two of those in the half back line is a risk. i cant stress enough how we need to be rock solid at the back to get anywhere, case in point 1996, no forwards but a mean defense and it nearly got us all the way, our forwards are ten times what they were then, unfortunately our defense is twenty times worse
Quoteforwards are ten times what they were then, unfortunately our defense is twenty times worse
i told you a million times not to exaggerate.
the current mayo team will not be rock solid at the back and out best hope is to outscore out opponents as we did with cavan. stay clear of all the rough stuff and attack attack attack

Barney, the parking facilities aint bad in fairness. Providing your not too late theres a fair chance you'll get parked very close to the pitch. Good car parking near the brandywell (home of derry city f.c)
Hopefully muldoon will be back in time and start the game. Devlin was very impressive yesterday, so along with bradley and muldoon derry could be a potent enough full forward line.
This game is sounding like it could be
Derry 4.08
Mayo 1.17
With Derry banging in the goals & Mayo popping over the points.

Neither Armagh nor Fermanagh have a ground capable of hosting a qualifier at the moment (Fermanagh doing work on Enniskillen, Armagh, don't have one) - Celtic Park has hosted quite a few qualifiers, but they wouldn't allow us to play Dublin there when we were drew at home against them!!
As for the penalty area and exclusion area when looked at from that rather peculiar angle, I don't know what you mean at all - why what do you see??
I was pretty happy to see Armagh getting knocked out as they were probably the team everybody wanted to avoid, but then we go and draw the team that beat them... away, so not the ideal draw in fairness. I still think it's as well to get a good test though and Derry with that FF line will certainly be some test, if we can learn to deal with the likes of Bradley and Muldoon we will be on the right track. The only worry is how to we fix the problems of Saturday? That whole full-back line was poor, only Trevor Howley after an initial roasting managed to get into it and in the end he escaped with his reputation intact, thanks mainly to Larry Reilly going off. O'Malley and Higgins were brutal, and for all his qualities K Higgins wouldn't solve all those problems as he is nowhere near sticky enough to be a top corner back, just yet anyway. Who are they going to throw in the next day? we will need some height to handle Muldoon. I thought the Trevor experiment worked, I'd stick with that again for another day anyway, he attacked well but also read the game well defensively and picked up alot of breaking ball in the second half.
D Kilcullen didn't have a good day at the office, he looked a bag of nerves at times, I'd be inclined to give him another go. Everyone reacts differently to making their debut, Hanley thrived on it, Kilcullen didn't, but he is a much better player than he looked so I'd stick with experiment number 2 aswell. Hanley as everybody has said was a success, brings something new to the setup, pace and power along with finishing ability are all too rare in our county, we have found a gem in this fella. I'd also stick with B Moran at FF, he wasn't overly convincing but he really upset their fullback line and he showed good mobility at times, I think himself and D Kilcullen are in the same boat, they'll get better with time and practice.
I'd say the last night could be the end of the road for Billy Joe and Gardner, Harte will come in at no. 10 I think and Heaney will drop back to 5/6 when McGarrity comes on (McGarrity will hardly start the next day?). BJP seems lost at the moment and Gardner, well we know what he can and can't do at this stage, but we can't afford having both him and Trevor in the half-back line.
As for the full-back line, if the management solve that conundrum we'll take serious beating, the problem is are the players there?
Tough test ahead against Doire, but if we have serious ambitions, it's a game we should be winning, even if it is up there.

I didnt BJ Paden was that bad,he went through a power of ball and is it any wonder he is the way he is after all the messing he has had to endure all year. Give him another chance i say.
Having watched Mayo beat Cavan on Saturday I don't think Derry will have too much trouble here. As long as Derry break even around the middle they will win. Mayo FB line is poor and they will struggle with high ball into Muldoon and any ball into Bradley. I expect Lockhart to pocket mortimor. A confident Derry team is nearly impossible to beat in Celtic park.
I believe that game is now fixed for Saturday at half-three in Celtic Park. Anyone able to confirm or deny? There was some slobbering last time about when the games would be played. :(

In my opinion the Derry fullback line and full forward line are superior to those of Mayo, but the rest of the field is 50/50.
I think if we can get fair share around the middle third we should shade it by a point or two, but only if the right Derry team show up.
If the team against Monaghan show up, and judging on how we've perfromed in the passed after a big win that might well be the case, Mayo will destroy us. But, if we play the way we can, I think we will be too physical around the middle third for Mayo and as such the Derry verdict.
I hope this doesnt come across as being over-confident because I am anything but.
Game confirmed for Celtic Park at 3.30 on Saturday
It might still be on tv at 3.30. They showed dublin cork in hurling at this time. I see on the schedule they have it down for 2 matches on tv but it was the same last weekend and there was only 1. Ideally this game would be live at 3.30 and the westmeath/donegal or meath/fermanagh at 6.30. Cant see it happening though. Will the famous Derry support turn up for the match? It will be an interesting game and we'll learn exactly were Mayo are at. Derry are physically very strong in some sections of the pitch and on there day can be a match for anyone. Whether they turn up on Saturday is the big question - they were terriblle against Monaghan. People could be guilty of reading to much into yesterday - Armagh havent played a decent game all year and despite their supporters claims they were top 3 after a defeat to Donegal I dont think they were even close. With Muldoon back Derry could be very dangerous up front if they kick the ball in early and expose Mayo's weaknesses in defence. Very interesting game ahead.
See so far most people going with Derry on this one in the poll, I think 3.30 is to give us Mayo people a chance to get home after, I suppose ya have to give alot of time in the evening, some parts of Mayo 1&half - 2 hours from the Sligo border

Think your right Tyrone Dreamer, Mayo are famous for struggling miserably past weaker opposition but then are World Beaters against the other big boys (except Kerry)
Their listing is for a game at 6.30 on tv - probably be another meaningless hurling qualifier - cork v tipp most likely.
Can't see them showing a game during the day too, though you're right about Dublin v Cork.
Re the Derry attendance, it'll not be good, that time doesn't suit people, it's also the holidays for many derry folk (witness their complete absence from the board today).
I remember up at the Derry v Kildare game in Celtic Park last year, timed for 3.30 on a saturday too, about 2000 made the trip - if that.
Hopefully the win on Sunday will get a few more there, but I can't make it.

What do you mean "confidence". What is the miraculous change Mayo are going to make in 7 days. Do they have a whole FB line hidden in a hedge somewhere ready to spring on Derry. Maybe I am too innocent to understand the complexities of Mayo team selection but I thought if you had better FB's you'd played them against Galway and Cavan - Silly me. Mayo could win the game alright, but only if they clean Derry out in the middle. Also, I don't expect to see mortimor arms outstretched like the christ waiting for the applause of his loving fans this weekend, Lockhart will take care of him - he's one of the best in the business at that.

Celtic Park is in Derry city, Derry city is 90% nationalist - the side of the river where Celtic Park is located is approx 110% nationalist - as Lynchbhoy pointed out to someone else the only problem you'll have is if some locals think that the Mayo shirt is in fact a FC Pyunik shirt (who Derry City play in the Champions League next week) or more likely a Glentoran shirt ;)
To be honest you's won't encounter any problems at all - Henry Downey has a bar in the city which is one of big spots for going out I'm led to believe - Bailestil or some of the locals can give ye all better info during the week.

Fair play, only been in the North 3 times, first time was this year. I think I nearly sh!t a brick the first time I crossed the border out of Leitrim, kept quite for hours (which my mates found do out of character, and very funny, they where all a little uneasy at first too, 6 lads on the Beer in Belfast all Connacht & Munstermen all first time in the 6 counties), however hours later lost & locked, I was wandering in a direction I did not know, belting out the Green & Red.
I'm planning on going up. So, seeing as a lot of the Nordies will be gone on their holidays, and assuming we get there safe and sound, we mightn't be too outnumbered.
Our defence definitely needs some major improvements as Johnno said afterwards. Tom Cunniffe did well when he came on I thought and could come in. Although Kilcullen might be deserving of another shot at it at CHB. James Kilcullen was warming up in the second half and I think he should start at full back the next day. He did very well there against Kerry in the league, and overall wasn't that bad - definitely better than O'Malley did on Saturday.
Clarke
Howley
J Kilcullen
O'Malley/A Higgins
T Mort
D Kilcullen
T Cunniffe/Gardiner
Heaney
D Brady (with McGarrity to come on again at similar stage)
G Brady/Campbell (Brady did better than I expected when he came on. BJP didn't impress)
Hanley
Dillon
C Mort
B Moran

Looks like Derry are shaping up as favourites going on the poll. It depends on how much can be read into the Armagh match, but I suppose beating Armagh at any stage deserves credit. I still fancy us to do the job though, provided we solve our full-back line problems. I agree Derrys FB and FF lines are stronger but after that I think we have the edge in most positions. By the way Lockhart played at 6 the last day? are ye going to put him into corner back the next day just to look after Mortimer? seems a bit drastic but if that results in him leaving Hanley, good news for Mayo!

Is our midfield situation as bad as it may seem, Pat Harte is on his way back and that should make a drastic improvement to midfield.
QuoteAlso, I don't expect to see mortimor arms outstretched like the christ waiting for the applause of his loving fans this weekend, Lockhart will take care of him - he's one of the best in the business at that.
The thing with Mortimer is that even if Lockhart were moved from centre back to the corner, and can't see that happening, then Mortimer will still come away having won very little if any of the ball that comes his way and will somehow still end up with 3 or 4 from play .... and you will come away from the game thinking that Lockhart cleaned Mortimer (regardless of result) only to be shocked later to find that he scored 3 or 4 ...... exact same as the poor Cavan lad on the "Mayo v Cavan" thread this morning who was claiming their corner back cleaned Mort
very true, the little hoor has a knack of picking off 3/4 scores from play while getting "cleaned". In fairness it did seem as though he was quiet against Cavan but look at his points tally, not many corner forwards more deadly than him.
Lads Lockhart played at corner-back on Sunday and will undoubtedly stay there
Conor Mortimer is despised because he acts the goat sometimes and annoys others on and off the field but he is 95% of the time deadly be it from frees or play.Cavan done well on him but he still scored 7 times and had a few wides.Kissing to the crowd is best left till 5 oclock on a sunday in september after we beat someone in croker.Still much prefer to have him than mark him.
Lockhart will have his hands full if he marks him but i doubt he will mark mortimer, too much pace and turning and better left to a smaller faster back if derry have one.

We have loads of options in the full back line. And changes will be made. Our full back line could be a combination or any of the following :
Howley, J Kilcullen, O'Malley
or
A Higgins, J Kilcullen, Howley
or
A Higgins, D Heaney, Howley
or even
O'Malley, D Brady, Howley

Abbeysider - you are painting a picture of me as if I am from Derry or support Derry. I'm neither. I was watching Cavan and Mayo in castlebar cos I support Cavan. There were so many problems on the Mayo team that a better team than Cavan (e.g. Derry) will probably take full advantage of. I think it is you who is the silly one :P
myles is from Cavan Abbeysider. HArdly overconfident about anything at this stage. I'll be working on Saturday I'm afraid so won't be able to go. Having been working last Saturday too, the only reports I've read are the ones on here and it seems Mayo still are doing an awful lot of flooting around with the defence. Sure it's no wonder, we've conceded 5-17 in our last two games. We need a big full back to handle the high ball that Derry are sure to pump into Muldoon and Bradley and not playing J Kilcullen there since the league final doesn't make it an automatic choice that he will comfortably slot in there the next day either. I'm very worried about this match truth be told!:(

To be honest Farrandeelin, flooting wasnt the word for what went on on Saturday,it was worse than that,Cavan hadnt the biggest forward line ever to grace a football field, but they won more than their fair share. I think we will have to remane the full back line" bombscare"....only joking. The big question is what change will be made in there? Nallen or Brady or who knows Pat Harte? i'm sure Johnno will have a plan.( i hope)
Kilcullen to full back, Padden to CHB - like they league where they were a hell of alot better than anything since then.
May fans are a bit cluless when t comes to tactics like a number of their players. It has taken us 3-4 years to relaise Gardiner cant defend. All mayo fans do is give out about BJP yet in Saturdays game he set was playing as an extra defender - and set up 4 of Mayos first half points and and dispossessed Cavan men four times. He is one of the few Mayo men with defensive qulaities and for that reason alone O Mah will not drop him nor will any other manager.
Forward play is very good I just worry bout Bradley at 14 and young Hanley wont get it all his own way against Sean Martin Lockhart. Will be very tight.
you mayo boys seem to forget that Lockhart isnt our only top class defender...McCloy, probably one of the top 3 full backs in the country...McGoldrick who admittedly yous might not have heard of is turning into a real find, kept Hanratty of monaghan scoreless and did a good job against armagh, he is more than able to man mark someone. then we have Gerard O'Kane, traditionally a half back but can do a job in the corner on his day...even if his form hasnt been great yet this year. Not to mention Kevin McGuckain, on the road to recovery has been on the bench for the last two games. I'm not sure how close he is to returning to first team action but I reckon not far away as his realistic target would have been the Ulster final, also this weekend.
Yous also seem to be forgeeting that we have 3 full forwards, bradley of course who is improving every game and scored 5 against Armagh and 1-2 against monaghan, Enda Muldoon who didnt play against armagh due to flu, collie devlin...yous might not have heard of him but he has all-ireland club honours with ballinderry, was our best forward against armagh and you will see just how good he is come saturday. Then we have players who can drop in there, Mark Lynch, Conleith Gilligan, and 2 or 3 very nippy forwards on the bench.
I'm not saying we are definately going to win, but listening to some of the mayo posters on here you may well be underestimating the threat derry have.
I said it before, if Derry can win their fair share in the middle third then I think our forwards have a better chance of scoring than yours with the quality of our full back line. So provided we get that fair share around the middle, I'll be going for Derry by a point or 2.
Can't believe Derry actually have got a home Championship tie, God know if any team needs home advantage to get a crowd... we do.
Anywho... Don't be worried about visiting the Brandywell, its well used to coping with Mexican's travlling up north, thanks to the Brandywell Stadium next door.
For Pre-Match Pints you can hit Mary B's on Elmwood Tce, rightbeside the ground.
Alternatively "the Oak" which is just outside the City walls and would be en route between the city centre and the Ground. It would be the big bar for Derry City and travelling fans on match day.
You would usually be able to get parked near the gound on one of the side-streets. no worries about getting clamped as there will be no police nearby. Make sure your handbrake is in full working order!

Mexicans very apt. but these boys in Green & Red aint as soft a touch as you Gringos seem to think :D
I really do think both sets of fans are really underestimating the other team. I know that has been the downfall of many of Mayo & Derrys opponants down through the years.

I reckon the GAA wants them to show a minimum certain amount of hurling games each year.
First prices up for the game:
14 Jul 15:30 Derry vs Mayo 6/4 7/1 8/11
I'd go along those lines - as I said on the Derry thread, Mayo were the worst draw we could have got (well maybe away to Meath wouldn't be great either).

Well a tough draw but be nice to have a day & night out in derry.
Theres one serious problem and thats our lack of a full back and paddy bradley

I guess they're showing two football games on the Sunday so probably thought it would be a bit much to show three football games and no hurling.

rte will decide today (tuesday) whetehr they will show cork v tipp or mayo v derry.I suspect the latter for tv because the numbers watching would be bigger.
Don't think there will be any need for tickets.
I hope a big Mayo crowd travel. We need it. Despite the problems both teams have encountered a win here will really put the show back on the road. Our problems at the back are too major to overcome this late in the year so we will always be ripe for a pasting. Fair enough we are poor under a high ball but there is no serious do or die work ethic from our backs. Do they want it badly enough? You don't need to be a great classy footballer to be a good back. Toughness, hard-work and stickiness will get you a long way.
I believe Paddy Crozier is married to a Mayo woman as well so hopefully she will pass on a few tips during the week.
By the way did anyone see St Patrick on Saturday. We'll need him this weekend.

I dont know if Mayo will ever be ripe for a pasting,we have not had a decent full back for a good few years and our scores against have never been that bad, our forward division is turning into one of the best in the country so with that working well we will always be odds on to out score the opposition. St. Patrick didnt seem to be around Last Saturday, maybe he was on the reek praying for the right result! As someone said earlier i am also loking forward to a night out in Derry, its a cracking town and the belles love the southern lads up there....Although my missus is not too happy i am going as i have some history still living up there.... but i will suffer the aggro to see our lads in action! :D

I think its amazing that about five 15 years on Bebo has come up with a Myth that Mayo are somehow hard-core nutjobs. Mayo has to have the mellowest fans, players & population in the country. Jaz the nearest thing Mayo ever got to a ruck was 1996, the one that got away.

Both against Kerry and i dont think our back lines were the direct cause of those pasting, everyone involved has to take a share of the blame for those hammerings. Generally in the past few years we have done well against teams from the North.
Bad news from the mayo camp
St Patrick has been defrocked . he was a couple of rows infront of me at the cavan game in civillian gear. I think iit could have bee a contractual dioute between Nike and the Mill bar over what gear he would wear.
barney sare you trolling for a fight again dening the work ethic of the may backs sure some of their technique may be questioned but over all they arre a very tenacious bunch who never give up and none more so in this regard that you arch nemises P gardiner. Small guys like them have to put in that extra effort or they would just be swallowed up and i will repeat they only let in 10 scores to cavan not exactly a disastours performance even if cavan forgot about scoring points for the last 10 minutes or so.
Which player apart from gardiner and g brady do you think is not overly interested?

You'll be hoping pretty dang hard for that one Barney. Martin Carney was talking to Matt Cooper on The Last Word last night - Carney was at the Derry v Armagh game in Clones and he reckoned that Derry stood up to and eventually overcame Armagh in the physically intense stakes. Derry beat Armagh at their own game, in other words. Looks like a 2-5 to 0-9 to me. In the Oakleaf's favour I'm afraid. :(
I would not describe Gardiner as my arch nemesis. i think his tackling is too weak for him to be on the team, and that a general change is needed from attacking half-backs to a more stable back-line. There is no co-ordination to the defending. It is very much man for man. The support from Brady in midfield and some of the forwards on Saturday was very much lacking. We have to stop deluding ourselves. Some of our defensive play this year is as bad as it gets. The evidence is there - 5 goals in 2 games. The ease with which Donegal scored in the league final. Terrible starts to Dublin, Cork and Galway in the league. If we don't face up to reality the big day will never arrive.
9 Goals conceded in last 3 Championship games :o
Mayo on paper should be too strong but I fancy Derry here - they beat a very good Armagh side albeit they find it difficult to score ( Armagh that is ) - so Derry have the potential to go far.
i think that we will have to play a lot lot better then we did on saturday,we have to remember that with 15 minutes gone in the 2nd half cavan were 1 point up in a match that felt more like a training session than a championship match. Derry will have far more options available to them than cavan who in fairness caused us all sorts of problems in midfield and the full back line by just pumping high ball in to the square.Hanley is not going to get the room that he got on staurday when he is going to be marked by the great sean Marty who won't give an inch, some of the marking by cavan in the final 15 minutes of the game was dismal how many times did a mayo player get a ball and no cavan player within 10 yards of him .Its going to be a different story this saturday derry are a proud footballing county and it ain't going to be easy in Celtic park.
Quotegreat sean Marty
dfont you mesan the old sean marty who at his prime only really ever played his best at corner back
still wouldn't mind have him playing for us rosnarun he is a savage footballer i allways felt he was curtailed when playing in the corner or fullback
If we play Heany at 6 and J. Killcullen at 3 we should be alright. If Killcullen is getting done for pace then just switch him with Heaney. I'm surprised that J. Killcullen has not been tried out at 6 before, he has the size and the aggression for the position.
For the next day I'd go something like this.
Clarke (O'Malley if fit)
L. O'Malley J. Killcullen Higgins
Howley Heaney T. Mort
McGarity Harte
BJP Hanley Dillon
A. Moran B Moran C. Mort.
D. Brady hasn't the pace to start, but is a good option to bring on to "soften up" a few fellows if needed. Ideally I'd like to see Harte as a half forward and if the B Moran experiment is not working then I would move him to midfield and get Harte to replace BJP.
If only we had a young Peter Ford or Kevin Cahill to call on.

We used to think that too, but he's been tried at CHB quite a few times and tbh the best I've seen him play in years was last Sunday on McDonnell - he was back to his old best, granted this season is the first injury free season he's had in a few years and he's still only about 29/30 max. Not a bad team intothewest, although as said here, i doubt Ronan McG will start.
Also, I wonder would it be worth chancing Peadar G at half forward instead of Billy Bob Padden?

However, every cloud and all that.....there is no getting away from the fact that more Mayo people will now travel as there is no other option, and every single person will be needed as by all accounts this is a tough place to get a result from. So hop in your cars lads and lassies and lets head up in droves, the boys will need our support big time up there!
Ok, tough game on Saturday and probably the toughest draw we could have got.
The negatives from Saturday night were the big problems which still exist in the defence, particularly the full back line. Suffice to say they've been well covered so there's no point in going over that ground again. Out of the 6 backs that started only T Mortimer impressed and even then he made some basic handling errors that he's becoming accustomed to. The experiment worked though as he showed a toughness and aggression that had been lacking in it's three previous office holders.
Midfield had its problems as well. McCabe got well on top for a period and could have caused us more problems had not not ran out of steam and moved in FF. McGarritty won't start on Saturday as he looked miles off the pace but it was great to see him back and the game will have brought him on no end, not a bad sub to have coming in.
The big plus was the forward division. Hanley has the potential (no point in judging the lad on one game) to be exactly what we need - a big, strong footballer who is able to win possession and run at defences. The Barry Moran experiment worked well too. He won a lot of ball, broke ball and generally caused mayhem in there. C Mort and Andy Moran were feeding well off him and if Andy had his shooting boots on could have finished with 1-4 or 1-5 to his name (how did he miss that goal???).
On to the Derry game on Saturday albeit nervously. If our defence is as bad again then our summer is over but if we can tighten up a bit and the forwards are on form then we should progress. As for changes, well you would have to think that there will be changes at 2 and 3 but who will fill them is anyones guess. They may operate a system like they did against Kerry in the League where they doubled up on the big lad. Probably our best option. Whether you like it or lump it Gardiner will start so it remains to be seen whether Heaney will drop back to 6 or not when Harte returns.
Probably just one change in the forwards. It has to be the end for BJP. He's got more chances in more positions than anyone else and has been consistanly poor in them all. However, he seems to have a fan club on this board so I'll probably be ran for that comment. I'd have Campbell on there, impressed me in the League and don't know why he lost his place.
So all in all, a bit of defensive tweaking and hoping we can up our peformance I can see victory by a small margin for us. It'll be tight though...
P.S. Like any Mayo match that is not covered by RTE/TG4/Setanta, it is a pity about the match not being on telly. Not everyone can always make the games and it's a shame that they will miss out. It is the tie of the round so I'm surprised they are not showing it. Plus, no reason why they couldn't show 2 qualifiers on a Saturday....

Not a bad team intothewest, although as said here, i doubt Ronan McG will start.
Also, I wonder would it be worth chancing Peadar G at half forward instead of Billy Bob Padden?
dont think peadar is an option in the forwards. we've seen in the past him kicking some great points from play but we've also seen him balloon them wide just as often too.
his defending is letting him down badly these days. if he keeps playing like this, his goose will be very shortly cooked.
Surely theyre not showing a relatively meaningless hurling match again this weekend at the expense of a do or die qualifier game? If its true thats a terrible decision. Any 1 of 3 of the football qualifies would have been a better option than the hurling. I hope that the info is wrong.
Lads what with the moanong about the location . for most of mayo Derry is closer than Dublin esp from north mayo. and for god sake buy your granny a wheelchair and wooly hat . old people are so lazy and selfish

It's definitely the hurling they're showing, confirmed on RTE.ie http://www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/2007/0710/gaa.html?gaa
I'd agree with a lot of what Cllr Willie has to say. Campbell looked good during league. Very strong, not afraid to stand up for himself and can kick some excellent scores. I'd see him as more of a threat going forward than BJP, but it depends on if Johnno wants a third midfielder/extra defender, or an out and out attacker - that could make his mind up for him.
I had left Harte out of the team I posted earlier. He's a big addition. I would prob start him in midfield alongside Brady with Heaney back to 6, and either of the Kilcullen's at 3.
Clarke
Howley
Kilcullen (either)
O'Malley/A Higgins
T Mort
Heaney
Gardiner/A Higgins
D Brady (McGarrity to replace around half time)
Harte
Campbell
Hanley
Dillon
A Moran
B Moran
C Mort

Agreed, it must be the South Mayo Brigade Complaining :D
Everyone to Derry, on your bikes lads & ladies.
So its 3 Saturdays in a row of live hurling qualifiers
Tipp have already been shown live 3 times this summer as have Cork
Both teams are through to the quarter finals so its only a matter of who they play.
Surely to feck a football qualifier should be getting priority
I assume this is cash on the gate, the same as last weekend. I see a lot of people on here reckon Ronan wont start.. i think he will alongside Pat Harte with Brady on the bench or full back. David Heaney at 6. Just a thought.
There is zero chance of Brady being full-back.
Yes, he did ok against Donaghy in the All Ireland Final but he was pulling and dragging out of him and if we were not being roasted he would have been pulled up big time you have to think. James Kilcullen would have more of a case to play there and he has done so in 7 national league matches. Playing Brady there would be suicide.
I don't think JOM will go for too many changes and would not be suprised to see the same team named again.
I think the old saying of horses for courses may apply with any and all of MAYOS remaining games this year. Were heaney getting killed by their fullforward brady mould be shifted to impose muscle severely lacking there now.P bradley is physically strong and is likely to need someone like brady to halt his march.
Kerry are favourites for sam, tyrone dublin and a gang of others are well ahead of us according to paddypower who dropped us from 16/1 to 20/1 after the cavan game, mad as it seems i am putting a few bob on mayo for sam.Dublin appear to not have not improved since last year, vaughan was not good enough to start last yuear and all of a sudden he is the hero plus pillar is a poor tactician, tyrone have yet to be shown as a 2005 type force in league or championship and kerry lost a few lads and the star may fade for a game allowing a cork or galway type effort to nail them.

Brady played with Bradley over in Chicago a few years ago too afaik - he'd know his game well, maybe he'll have a word in JO'M's ear and tell him Bradley on form is unmarkable!!
Having watched the Armagh Derry game last night on Setanta this is what I got out of it. Starting with their full forward line i dont know what all the hype about Pady Bradley is, thought he only played ok, scored plenty of frees but generally didnt show well for the wall. That said Derry will certainly be expecting a lot more off him Saturday, with Muldoon back Bradley wont have to work for as much ball as he will be fed it directly from Muldoon. Howley is the man for Bradley with J Kilcullen going back on Muldoon.
Their half forward line and half back line are good at what they do, tough fearless players, they win a lot of breaking ball and were able able for Armagh in the middle third, which is no mean feat, trev mort will have his hands full with Joe Diver. Pierce Hanley and A Dillon are going to have work very hard for ball as it wont be half as easy to pick it up as against Cavan.
In midfield, i think that we have to start brady, doesnt matter if he cant last 70 minutes we need him there for the first half, without him we will be blown away. If they get a good foothold in midfield early on they will be harder to stop. A tight low scoring game is definitely going to suit derry so we need to try and get on top from the start.
Their full back line, if you include Sean Marty, who will prob mark Conor Mort is their best line, in McCloy they have an excellent full back, and if JOM watched the game last night, id hope he has the same view as me, barry moran experiment worked against cavan, maybe shelf it for this game, high balls on top of McCloy will suit him down to the ground. 3 fast inside forwards would do more damage. I thought barry did well, but this would be too hard a step up.
Armagh got 80% of their scores when they ran at the derry defence, this is something we are actually good at so we shouldnt have any problem playing that sort of game. As is the views of most people this will be a tight game, i still think were good enough, i still think its a great draw for us, its a good test and we should fear no-one in the 3rd round if we can get through this.
Shot at a team is:
1. Clarke
2. Higgins
3. Kilcullen
4. Howley
5. Kilcullen
6. Heaney
7. T Mort
8. Brady
9. Harte
10. BJP
11. Hanley
12. Dillon

MAYO: John O'Mahony has fresh doubts over a couple of key players leading into this weekend's trip to Derry.
Ciaran McDonald's injury plagued season looks set to continue, although he will be given every chance to recover from a troublesome hamstring problem, while rookie centre-forward Pierce Hanley is trying to shake off a knock sustained in the win over Cavan.
There is some good news for O'Mahony as he will have Pat Harte available after completing his four-week suspension.
Muldoon back for Mayo clash
DERRY: Manager boss Paddy Crozier is expected to be able to pick from a full strength squad when Mayo visit Celtic Park.
Enda Muldoon should be fit again after over coming the bout of 'flu that ruled him out of last weekend's win over Armagh, while centre-forward Conleth Gilligan picked up a leg injury but is also expected to be available.
Great post cmarty, Welcome to the board!
id agree with a lot of what you have to say. I saw most of the Derry V Armagh match on Setanta too.
Just regarding your team, I dont think Marty Mac will start (although id love to see him get a game).
Id say we could see Campbell come in, perhaps for BJP.
When is the team expected to be announced?
Johnno is a Thursday night man when it comes to naming his team so I'd imagine we'll hear tomorrow sometime. Will be interesting to see if he just goes with the same full-back line but demands more from them, or will be do another overhaul? Hopefully the second, because with Muldoon back we will definitely need some height back there. J Kicullen did well on big opponents during the league, I'd like to see him get another chance back there.
Cmarty - Couple of comments of someone who was at the game...
1 - Bradley missed about 6/7 weeks training/matches due to his suspension and that is why as he says himself he is only at about 60-70% at the moment
2 - The Derry half forward line is very poor and spend more time defending than attacking.
3 - Their full back line is very good and if McGuckan is back it will improve even more....McCloy looked good in the air when he didn't have any big full forward to mark...
4 - Most of Armaghs scores came from Derry making mistakes bringing the ball out of defence..
5 - Derry produced this performance out of pride at all the abuse they have been taking after 2 shocking performances against Monaghan/Antrim and could possibly like last year fold as they did after beating Tyrone...

Agreed Bradley had a quiet game from play but he has played very little football this year (prob about 6 games - club and county) between injury and suspension, believe me when he is on form he's very hard to stop, hopefully he'll be fully matchfit by Saturday.

Indeed that's the big worry, hopefully some of the lads who regularly check out this board will print off these criticisms and bring them to training with them tonight.
Personally, I don't believe this team are good enough for two big performances in a row ;) ;)
have to agree with brady @fullback . Bradley will do far more damage from frees than he ever would from play. Shame higgins is injured as he is the type of annoying Cnut bradley would hate. always in his face and doest foul too much.
But there is something to be said for the 'horses for courses' in this yers all Ireland final we should play D brady on donaghy from the start to give us some start and move him when he gets booked . or is that recurring nightmare not on till next year again,
BTW was watching that game last night armagh look buggered some of their new guys keenan ect looked very poor and a lot of them look very over the hill a half forward line of P mckeever and Martin orourke says it all really neither could get near the team when armagh were going well . they should still have won mind
DUBSFORSAM1
Comment about Bradley wasnt my view on him at full fitness, well aware of his ability, more of what I seen in that game. If hes 60/70 then, were looking at 70/80 against us..not many players would even be considered at that level of fitness so says a lot about him, but aside from his frees he didnt do much to impress.
Your point on the derry half forward line, when you playing against a team like armagh where they bring there half forward line so far back, your own half forwards are forced to defend. I thought they did well on Sunday, every breaking ball they were on top of it..McCrane & Tomer made very few clean catches, they were under constant pressure from the derry boys and any time they tried to break forward they ran into the half forward line defending.
Cmarty
Bradley didn't do that well but when he is playing full forward (not his normal position) and without Muldoon and being man marked by Andy Mallon it is a tough ask especially when apart from the first 20 mins the ball wasn't being played in quickly...he still kicked 5 points and had another couple of close wides...
As for the half forward line - most Derry fans would agree that they won't hurt the opposition....Mark Lynch I didn't notice, Gilligan taken off after 30 mins or so....to my mind if you have a half forward line that aren't going to hurt the opposition then that is bad......I am basing this on seeing Derry play a lot over the last 4/5 years and not just on one match......Armagh have the same problem in that their half forwards aren't going to score much and there was a general lack of pace about both sets...
The derry half forward line was actually better than you might think....Paul Murphy, Mark Lynch and Barry McGoldrick....all scored from play. Indeed McGoldrick scroed point of the game from way out on the wing. Paul Murphy wins loads of breaks, is strong, defends, attacks and scores from distance. Lynch is fantastic when he runs at defence, but admittedly I thought he didnt have his best game against Armagh.
Now Gilligan usually plays centre half, but was injured from the start and switched with Lynch into corner forward and that is why he came off. He was actually doin ok until the injury forced him to withdraw.
Remember now....all three half forwards scored from play against ARMAGH.
I think there are plenty of teams in the country who would like a half forward line like that.
Folks
P Bradley was marked by Enda McNulty ..... name me one forward in Ireland who has performed well against him over the last 7/8 years. I would worry more about the pace of the Mayo forward line. I think it will be a battle beween the 2 forward lines with Mayo looking the best bet at this stage.
derry do this every year they beat a big name team win the next 2/3 games and then fall short. so watch out mayo wer coming
Paddy should play the same team as last week - they're good enough and are hungry enough, but I think Mayo might have a wee bit too much class all over the pitch.
Paddy bradley's shite, dont even bother marking him lads. We're a fella wilkinson, he's a top top player, thats who you want to be marking.
Seriously, is the game on setanta??
Marty88 is clearly takin the piss or is from Tyrone. Wilkinson has been awful all year and its a mystery how the lad has made the panel never mind starting the first 2 games. All being well Gilligan will be fit enough to start if not Barry McGoldricks performance against Armagh means hes derserving of th spot. Regarding the outcome of sats game i feel Derry's consistency or lack of it is the key issue. A hungry derry team turn up and we have a chance, otherwise an embarrassing hammering awaits us at home
Morning all.
Any team named last night?
Who is reffing the game?
Heard nothing yet.I cannot go now and hate to have to listen on the radio but thats the way.My only change would be james kilcullen at fullback moving omalley to the corner and leave aiden higgins out until peadar gardiner shows that he is in trouble with either discipline or too much attacking and leaving room for counter attacks by derry. They will definetly drop the ball in for as long as they think it will work, why do we not do the same.Aim for Barry moran and let him break it or become a hero.I would not start d brady at midfield but would use him there for a half and let him at it or else into the fullback line were it in big trouble.I will post no more on this game but predict a Mayo win.

you spilt the beans there- We would have had mayo double team wilko if he was on and free up one of the other boys until you let the cat out of the bag!
:o
Paddy Bradley is probably the best forward in Ireland when he's match-fit, I can see a big performance coming from him on Sunday. Dont think Mayo are a great side they are short in the very important positions. In saying that Heaney's one of the best defenders about, if he's moved into full-back he'll do a good job on Muldoon. Still think Derry should just about scrape a tight game sayin we've home advantage.
From BBC
Derry have recalled goalkeeper Barry Gillis for Saturday's All-Ireland qualifier against Mayo at Celtic Park.
Gillis lost his place for last weekend's win over Armagh and his return in place of Shane O'Kane is the only change from that game.
Enda Muldoon does not earn a recall despite his recovery from 'flu with Paddy Crozier keeping faith with Paul Murphy and Colin Devlin.
Conleith Gilligan is also included after being an injury doubt.
However, Oak Leaf captain Kevin McGuckin remains out because of a fractured leg sustained in April.
McGuckin is on his way back after the injury but the qualifier has come too soon for the defender.
Team manager Paddy Crozier rotated the goalkeeping position between Gillis and O'Kane during the National League and he appears to be continuing with that policy judging by his selection on Thursday evening.
The forward line does include a number of positional switches.
Gilligan moves from centre half-forward to top of the left with Paul Murphy taking the number 11 jersey.
Barry McGoldrick switches from left full-forward to right half-forward.
Derry edged out Armagh 0-10 to 0-9 in a thrilling all-Ulster encounter at the weekend.

Not many surprises there in fairness, Harte was always going to get his place back. Is this the end of Peadar Gardiner now, when was the last time Mayo started a championship game without a Crossmolina man on the pitch? It seems odd that last years county champions don't have a representative on the field, I wonder how many other counties in the country have that boast!
Everyone knows why Padden keeps his place, he tracks back, can tackle, sweeps up loose ball around the middle and provides a link up between backs and forwards.
Its tough to call this match at the weekend. The key battle will be between Conor Mortimer and S M Lockhart, whoever comes out on top of that battle will decide the fate of the match.
Ar aghaidh linn!!
An unusual angle, but Mayo may benefit from the fact that they a playing a team, who six days ago played armagh, in what by all accounts could be described as a tight phyiscal game. Not too many teams have played Armagh in the past ten years and had not a few players sore for a few weeks. (no indicement of Armaghs style, I wish for their sheer intensity, that they were still in. well worth paying to see in my mind)
Any resonable Mayo fan that left croke park last September, did not expect Mayo to win an all-ireland within the next two-to three years, I hope all the tinkering around has at least brought us a little closer to that goal. We will know a lot on Saturday evening.
Not convinced by Howley, cannot get it out of my head, how last year in the league semi-final v Galway in Castlebar, he made some crazy runs up the field and was within 35 yards of the goal , but had no idea what to do and more than once doubled back out the field and lost the ball.
Thankfully, JOM has finally figured out that Gardner is not senior standard. We are still lacking in size,
is macdonald fit enough to play any part in the game.

Emm, this is why Howley is playing at corner back.
He is not there for making runs up the field. I have heard from many who were at the Cavan game that Howley had a stormer, was not afraid to tackle and was solid. This is what we are lacking in our back line for quite some time and it looks like Howley is the answer to alot of our problems. We need someone who can give a good hard fair shoulder and who can tackle.

Who will captain the team in the absence of Gardiner & O'Neill?
What worries me about Howley is that he commits himself early and sometimes gets caught out. I have felt since the All ireland u21 Final against Armagh when he gave an outstanding display that he was definitely one for the future. At least in himself Cunniffe, Trevor, and Heaney we have four backs that are not afraid to get stuck in and will tackle hard. Expect Billie Joe to play in front of the full-back line to compensate for O'Malleys lack of aerial ability.
To me the key to this game is whether Derry score goals. If they score 1 or less I think we will win, 2 or more and we're toast.
I'd be surprised if Heaney doesn't start full back with O'Malley going to the corner and Cunnife to wing back. That would be a big improvement.
David Brady is going to have to seriously up his work rate from the last day. McCabe had way too much time to deliver good quality ball to the full forward line.

Disagree about Heaney there Barney, I think he is quite poor in the tackle and tends to be drawn into giving away too many frees.
I think Heaney will go to full back as well, with Tom Cunniffe taking his place in the half back line (or possibly CHB with Kilcullen taking Heaney's place).
Solid looking team - Cunniffe was very good when he came on last week. Stuck tight to his man and tackled fair and hard. Happy with that team. Will be very tight, but I think we probably have our best team out.
Are there many travelling? I'm going up anyway - hopefully there'll be decent Mayo support.

I'd say it was 1995, Ciaran MC made his debut in 1993 with Jack O'Shea but he came on a as sub and was a sub the following year so i think himself and Jimmy made their first championship starts in 1995 ,yeah it seems funny not having a crossmolina player starting however if mayo progress i think they will have a big part to play jimmy settled things down when he came on against cavan, i heard Jimmy and Mc were flying in Training the other night and that Jimmy didn't give hanley a touch of the ball . also if we have 6 better forwards than a fully fit Ciaran Mc we have some set of forwards
Mayo should win this. Even though Derry beat Armagh I am still not convinced that they are anything more than an average team who have to work very hard for scores. Mayo could well be like Galway in 2001 when a first round loss was a blessing in terms of identifying what needed to be done. They are still one the top four or five teams in the country with a very strong panel - supplemented by the availbiity of players from Ros :D Anyway I expect them to win this by four or five points.

Have the directions to celtic park already been covered on this thread?? Il be coming from Letterkenny..any tips from there?
Cheers
This is a very tricky game for Mayo. I think there biggest problem is that they might not be able to get as fired up for this match as they would if it was Tyrone or Armagh due to Derry's lack of success this last few years. That could be a recipe for disaster depending on which Derry turns up. Derry at home on top form can be one of the hardest teams on Ireland to beat. A win here for Mayo though could really bring them on and open up the possibilty for a good run. Mayo dont seem to be goin well on recent form so Id say there chances arent much more than 50 50. Still raging at RTE for showing the Cork Tipp challenge match at the expense of a knockout between 2 of the top 10 teams in football.

If the Derry team that played Armagh show up, I think we will shade it.
Especially given home advantage and the fact the Muldoon will probably come on as an impact sub.

if if was like castlebar last week it will be buy 1 get 1 free ,the boys at the gate never took the stubbs of the tickets and people were giving the tickets to people outside the gate to be used again
I think you'll find the tickets in the North are a lot snazzier than they are in Caisléan a'Bharraigh Deel Rover. I was in Tyrone for the last game of the league and they gave me a ticket that looked like a ticket to the Ambassador's reception, where you can ate as many Ferraro Rochers as you can swalla. Seeing that this is Championship, I'm expecting gold edges and oak leaf filligree. ;D
For the Derry v Armagh game the tickets were £10 or 15euro. So I'd guess they'd be the same for this game.

i heard that Mc d was flying on tuesday and thursday night but my feeling would be that if he is not fit to start then hes not fit to come on
Time to start out my internet warrior days - my reception of Radio Ulster is shit - I'll have RTE as backup just incase.
Gl and enjoy all. May the best team win, and if not - sure as long as Derry do anyway!!
mike finnerty on mad west is brutal, dont know from the tone of his voice whether it is almost a goal or a mile wide. almost reminds me of brian carty, not quiet though.
Christ, Barry Moran is havin some game by the sounds of it!
B Moran keeping us in it. Kicked two points and scored the goal. Slobbery auld game tho.
HT Doire 0.8 Maigh Eo 1.3
Mayo lucky enough to be so close after a half that sounds (MWR) like Derry dominated and towered over most of our backs.
I felt coming in to the game that Mayo would have to score 2-10 or thereabouts. hard to see that happening now. Hope we come out strong or our season will be over.
anyone a link to listen to this game?
Conditions sound atrocious - hard to see anyone scoring 2-10; sounds like MacDanger and Ronan Mac might come in for the second half, wouldn't write us off just yet
Mayo down by two at half time, only scored 1-3, awful stuff! Getting wiped at midfield, the middle eight would wanna start gettin some breaking ball

Dillon off, Kilcoyne on for second half. Interesting....all star gone off!!!
we have a pretty inexperianced forward line at this point.
lets hope it works. Kilcoyne just scored a point.
Kilcoyne off injured, Campbell in
very unlucky for Kilcoyne. A MOran having a rough one
Derry Goal,
Not looking good,
We have 2 subs used also i think?
our inexperiance is killing us, why not use Barry moran more. We better score soon, if we go four down we are fecked.
Kevin O'Neill on - just kicked a wide.
in for who?
Billy Joe gone off for O'Neill Bomber
1-09 to 1-06 for derry. Ciaran McDpnald on for mayo
McDonald in, still down by three......10 mins to go! GArdiner for Cunniffe, injury! THanks Stephenite, my radio keeps cuttin out
1-12 to 1-6 30 mins gone in second half, looks all over
1-12 to 1-6 :o
Fair fcuks to the Derry boys. I never expected this turn around in their fortunes over the past week.
it is going to be a very long summer. shit
Game over and ball burst, as Finno just said on the radio. When you meet a better team there's not a lot you can do. Mayo have got a right scutching here, which stings, but what you can do?
Hats off to the Derry boys, the defence keep the leash tight in the first half and then their forwards showed the true difference between the teams. 2-13 to 1-06. Best of luck to them in the rest of the summer, I hope they all enjoy their pints in Derry tonight.
Did not see this result coming but fair play to the Derry lads, they got some abuse from the media over the last few weeks.
All the very best to Derry for the rest of the championship, from listening to it we were just beaten by a better team.
Jaysus, some baiting. Would never have guessed Derry would be any good. Or were Mayo just shíte?
Joe Brolly will have some smug face on him tomorrow

Having watched Mayo beat Cavan on Saturday I don't think Derry will have too much trouble here. As long as Derry break even around the middle they will win. Mayo FB line is poor and they will struggle with high ball into Muldoon and any ball into Bradley. I expect Lockhart to pocket mortimor. A confident Derry team is nearly impossible to beat in Celtic park.
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Now that is confidence.

well played derry best team by a mile one? However since Jom took over two of the worse championship displays that i have seen .If it were John Maughan or Micky Moran they would be lynched, Why did we not play a settled team during the League? He made 7 changes from the 1st championship game to the 2nd and 3 more today smacks of desperation not that of an astute manager. Both captain and vice captain dropped would any other county have done this.He has plenty of time fot the politics now >:( >:( >:(

Agreed - well done to the Derry lads - I hope yez make it a long Summer! ;)
mayo - feckin pathetic. will always let you down.
Well done Derry. As I said before the game theyre a tough team to beat when they decide to play. Signs of Paddy Bradley getting back to form. Feel sorry for Mayo supporters but no JOM. Always seem to be anti Tyrone and seemed to take digs at the "Northern style" at every opportunity. Maybe he wasnt such an expert after all!
Well done Derry. Didn't believe you could do it. You've no-one to fear now and no-one will want to draw the Oak Leafers.
Great show from Derry, Bradley on fire, Mc Goldrick ate Mortimor, Lynch had a horse of a game when he came on WHF, we dominated in many positions, maybe Lynchboy is rite, get a good manager and who knows? Physically we dominated, oh Fergal Doherty put in a few big hits, a brute!
Unreal support compared with the Armagh game. They really came out of the woodwork today.
Five minutes into the second half I thought here we go again. It looked like Mayo were going to take off. Good to see Derry pulling it off. We still make awful ball handling errors (especially coming out of defence) but if we maintain that hunger who knows how far we'll get.
QuoteUnreal support compared with the Armagh game. They really came out of the woodwork today.
All the same Celtic Park wasn't exactly full, judging by the clip on TV, if you couldn't get a few today you'd never get them. But I suppose few Mayo people were there and they may have wished they weren't there and Saturday games never really draw a crowd.
Over the moon with the result today. I'd be a skeptic at the best of times and never saw this coming. Big Enda was different class in the middle of the park and was the main difference( his goal summed up his pure class) Mayo seemed very brittle and the heads dropped after derrys first goal. But less about our opponents shortcomings, it was a Derry performance of the highest class ;D
The mightiest Derry performance I have seen in a long time....definately an improvement from the Armagh game even.
Lynch did do really well when he came on but it might have taken the withdrawal from the original starting line up to get the performance out of him.
Really happy with the determination, spirit and skill they players showed...this is how we all want to see our team approach a game, and continuing to do it will undoubtedly attract more supporters to every game.
Cant wait for the draw to see who we get next...some big hitters in there yet but think we have a good chance of beating anyone now if we can keep the heads and build on each game.
Switching Muldoon to midfield ..... seldom has one change been the catalyst for such an upping in a teams performance ........ based purely on listening to the radio !!
Only saw the brief highlights after the hurling game, so hard to analyse. But it was very poor judgement from the Mayo keeper that gifted Derry their first goal, which was a key score, and the keeper wasnt too clever for the second one either, standing a mile off his line, albeit a lovely finish.
EDIT - recent results also give further evidence to the notion that Monaghan are a good team. Win or lose v Tyrone, I'm sure they'll be in the quarters.
Mayo lads - any truth in the rumour that JOM has retired to life as an opposition backbencher?
well done Derry, if none of the Connacht teams do it, I hope ye go all the way.
Listened to it on the radio. By the sounds of it Howley and Cunniffe were big positives as was Hanley. Will be some casulaties before nexy year but def think that O'Neill, McD and Heaney have a lot to offer anyway.
Sounded like SML was savage, What a legend, as good as pony??
SML was unreal today as was the other corner back mcgoldrick, a real masterclass given in both corners, kevin mcguckin may go and look about another position ;) ;) :D
Well done Derry - you beat us out the gate today. Here's a Mayo view on the day's events: http://www.mayogaablog.blogspot.com/ (http://www.mayogaablog.blogspot.com/)
That's an excellent blog - great to see clips from the game.
why do teams always lie down and roll over against derry in the qualifiers? whos next monaghan?
01, 04 and now 07 - lucky runs in the qualifiers?. tyrone 03, 05 and 07 champions? - something has to give!
Phew, another one of those days. I don't think 10 points was a fair reflection on the game but we were by far second best. I think being rational we all knew after Salthill that we would be beaten by the first decent team we met. It duly happened. Maybe we won't see the likes of James Nallen, Kieran McDonald, David Brady and Kevin O'Neill in the green and red again. Time has caught up with them. They have battled bravely for us and have given us some unbelievable days.
Fair play to Derry. Well done lads. Great defence and when we had the chance to put ye away in the second half we failed. Your management made the right changes and ye took your chances. Ye will be hard beaten now.
The only positive from our point of view was that our best players were the young lads - Cunniffe, Howley, Hanley - all magnificent. They were the ones that stood up and tried to take the game to Derry. Once players started falling with injuries and illness in the spring it was always going to be an annus horribulus you feel.
One man certainly smiling will be Mickey Moran. We have got what we deserved. The man was treated in a disgraceful manner by our county board. John Maughan shafted before him. They over achieved in getting reasonable teams to All Ireland finals. We have now had two serious beatings against unexceptional teams in the space of 2 months. Our worst championship in years. I'm not calling for a change of management but serious questions have to be asked. The control of the team this year has been incompetent and negligent in the extreme.
We were beaten by the better team, i though after half time that we would push on and win the game despite not playing well, but the derry goal killed us. It is time to rebuild now, it is along time to next january before the start of the league. I really do believe though that jom is the man that will guide us to an all ireland. We will have a revamped team next year and now is the rime for some of the older guys to retire gratiously, they have served us well- nallen,d brady, o neill. I do think though that mcd (corner forward/ impact sub) and heaney(wing back) have something to offer next year. Once we get a settled young spine to the team we will be challenging and we have 6 months to sort these and the whole of the league to try them out.

No
A 10 point defeat was very disappointing, but I don't think Mayo were realistically 10 points inferior to Derry.
When Mayo drew level about 10 minutes into the second half, they had the possession and the chances to take the lead - Andy Moran kicked some terrible wides, C Mort was also very poor.
We didn't take the lead and when Derry got their goal (bad judgement by Clarke) some Mayo heads seemed to drop. Cunniffe and Kilcoyne going off injured also seemed to have an effect.
Having said that, Derry took some excellent scores, Paddy Bradley was brilliant. They isolated him on Liam O'Malley and he caused havoc.
As said before, the younger lads were the best performers for Mayo - Trevor Howley and Tom Cunniffe were excellent. Heaney also had a very good game.
I think the criticism of JOM is justified to a certain extent, in that he left it until after the Galway game before carrying out any experimentation. But the changes he made since have worked in my view. He is the right man to build the next Mayo team.
I think yesterday in Celtic Park was probably the last we've seen of Kevin O'Neill, David Brady, Ciaran McDonald and James Nallen in the green and red - wonderful players for Mayo, given so much to the county.

I was at the game yesterday and would have to agree with everything that has been posted on here. One man that didnt get a mention yet was Trevor Mort. I thought he was excellent especially in the first half. Maybe the break will do everyone good,we have a lot of miles on the clock in the past 4 years. A new era begins..........(again)

ya i suppose the only positives were howley, t mort, barry moran, young cunniffe and hanley. kilcoyne did well too when he came on and put himself around but hard luck on him to get injured.
omalley got skinned alive and i couldnt understand how he was left on bradley for the whole game.
a man said to me this morning that had mayo won the game we would would not have won it anyway! we used 6 subs - kilcoyne, campbell, mcgarrity, gardiner, oneill and mcdonald! any chance one of these was a blood sub??? doubt it tho. seems johno lost the plot a bit on the sideline.
there will be a bit of a clearout of the old guard now. to those old heads we say thank you.
I think McGarrity was a blood sub for David Brady
This is very disappointing to be beat by 10 points! I didnt see the game myself as I was away but its a pity.
B Moran and P Hanley sound like they have some real potential. Would really have liked to have seen it.
Plenty of time to prepare for next year. Keep the Faith! ;)

I'm not trying to rub salt in the wounds here, but the reason why Mayo had so many wides was due to the immense pressure put on the forward by the Derry defence. They were forced to shoot from impossible angles or positions as they had no choice. You must remember this is the same Mayo forwards that score 19 points in the win over Cavan, those forwards dont become bad or loose the skills in the space of one game. The simple fact was that they didnt get the time on the ball to take a meaningful shot.
I thought on the day Derry were at least 10 points the better side. Apart from that 10 minute spell at the start of the second half when Mayo had a lot of possession, Derry dominated all over the pitch.
In my opinion Mayo are a good side with a sprinkling of some excellent young players and then the older fellas like McDonald, Brady and Trevor Mortimer (who I thought was Mayo's best player). I wouldnt bet against yous next year provided the older fellas stay a while longer.
Was always going to be a big ask for last years beaten finalists to push on again this year! Hunger is a strange thing, you just can't train it into a team! The early break will hopefully do us (mayo) some good. We have had a busy time the last 3 years and there has been big falls as well as some good scalps. But from team selection etc JOM has been looking to the future once we lost to Galway and the passage to AI Glory was by the scenic route. Being in Connacht and with the large player base, Mayo do not have to worry about the dog fights Leinster and Ulster teams face every year, so there will be Mayo team emerging again. Problem is to rise above the mediocrity that gets us to AI finals but no Sam. Finally, I would like to thank Nallen, McD, Brady and O'Neill for their contribution to Mayo football for a decade plus. Thanks lads! Also Best of luck to our conquerers Derry.

QuoteFinally, I would like to thank Nallen, McD, Brady and O'Neill for their contribution to Mayo football for a decade plus. Thanks lads!
One thing that is driving me nuts in the aftermath of this game is the rush to send a lot of the old boys out to grass .... surely we should quit this type of comment, let them make there decision and then talk about it. Peoples memories are short - it was only last February that Brady was the best player on the park in 2 or 3 league games in a row. Injury has plagued him since. As for MacD, the man hasn't a months training in him since the All-Ireland final last year. Who is to say he can't go away and get his operation now, take 6 months off for full recuperation and then see if he is physically able for it. Some people are even suggesting Heaney should call a day ... the man could do a job next year at No. 5 for any team in the country.
Now, not meaning to contradict myself in any way, but ......... in the best interests of Mayo football, it would probably be for the better if the likes of Brady, Nallen and O'Neill retired. These guys are the real leaders in the dressing room and while they may still have something to offer, the problem as i see it is if they were to remain then it will be difficult for the new up and coming guys to develop the leadership qualities needed, to take on that mantle. This i reckon is one of the reasons why Galway U-21's of the last few years haven't come on and taken the senior team back to the very top table, i.e.: because the likes of Joyce and Savage are still there and thus the U-21's that were leaders in the pack at that grade have found it impossible to replicate that at senior level. That is a path i don't want Mayo to go down. We need our young guys to become the leaders in the pack now. We need Howley, Higgins, Cunniffe, Moran, Hanley, Kilcoyne, etc. to become the leaders for next year, but if Brady, O'Neill, etc stay on then it will be much harder.
Anyway, 2007 - Mayo for Sam - burst ! No surprise obviously. I guess the only real disappointment was that we didn't get another game or two so that the young lads could get that bit more experience which would stand to them in the long term.
In Higgins, Howley, Cunniffe, Heaney and Trevor Mort we have enough top talent to fill No.s 2, 4, 5 & 6. Somebody somewhere is however going to have to step up to the mark and take ownership of the No's 3 & 6 jerseys.
At midfield, presuming all is well with McGarritty please God, then we need him back to full form for next year and then someone somewhere is going to have to step up to the mark for next year to play along side him. Two weeks ago Barry Moran would have been the obvious answer but it looks like he is at least started to pove himself elsewhere.
As for the foward line: Hanley looks the real deal but needs time (hopefully burnout won't be an issue), i would be confident there is more improvement in Aidan Campbell (again, needs protecting against burnout), Kilcoyne needs to take it up another gear, Mort needs to go away and find the missing ingredient that results in him failing against the really top tough corner backs, Dillon - well i don't know what to think or suggest here actually - goes from man of the match against Cavan to being subbed off at half time, hard to figure. Barry Moran - hopefully they weren't 2 one off games !, Andy Moran - hard to be critical when coming up against possibly the best corner back of the last decade but nonetheless needs to take it on another gear again for next year.
Reflecting on the game there is one point that I cant run away from.
O Mahoney didnt even try to sort out our problems in the full back line. We all knew and discussed what Derry would do before the game. Our biggest weakness was our full back line. We knew they would rain in long or high balls and play direct football.
The dog on the street knows that Liam O Malley isnt the answer at full back. His own club wont even play him there, yet nothing was done to sort out this problem.
Surely the answer was to drop Heaney to full back and bring Cunniffe to wing back and move O Malley to the corner.
Did the Mayo management not see this? Were they that blind?
Or is it the case that they did see this and simply decided not to act, perhaps knowing in their hearts that the current players were not good enough to win an All-Ireland. And perhaps losing to Derry, blooding young players and waving good bye to the older stock is somehow the lesser of the two evils, than going further in a competition and getting roasted in the later stages in the championship in Croke Park...
I dont know.
QuoteI'm not calling for a change of management but serious questions have to be asked. The control of the team this year has been incompetent and negligent in the extreme.
Can you expand on this Barney?
Realisitcally we were not going to be winning an All ireland this year after the drubbing of last September. It would have taken an exceptional team to do this. Our lads exceeded expectations in getting to the final. However the manner in which Mayo football was controlled since then is disappointing.
Firstly, the former management team, that disappointed in their performance on All Ireland day, but who gave huge commitment throughout the year were sent packing as part of a County Board/Fine Gael pact that would secure JOM as manager, and the hoped for 3 seats. It is not the first time our Board was politically active - remember the Padraig Nally sentencing - it is an abuse of position period.
The group stages of the league showed up good results. However it was hard to get really excited about what was happening in front of us. We were being seriously tested in key positions and it seemed that a residue of fitness was pulling us through. The training regieme must be questioned - why have we been starting matches badly - is it a physical or a mental thing?
The first recognition of problems was the substitution of James Kilcullen in the League Final. He had the best cut at the job all year, but did not play again.
Salthill and the eye was definitely off the ball. This was the team that JOM and his management had prepared to lead us into the big championship match in the week before the general election. We were thrashed and shown up badly. The problems ignored during the league came home to roost.
And then the game-plan was torn up completely. Numbers 3, 6, 11, and 14 were all replaced for the qualifiers. 3 players that were not on the panel were deemed good enough to start. The season end acting as an effective set of trial games. What should have been done in January was happening before our eyes in the heat of championship action.
There was a failure to deal with problems during the match on Saturday -
- Liam O'Malley reminded me of Pat Holmes the day Maurice Fitz took him to the cleaners.
- David Brady was left on when clearly not up to the pace of the game.
- no effort to make a change at corner-forward. The ball was going in at the start of the second-half and if we had someone on form it could have changed the course of the game.
- Kilcoyne did not have any involvement in any other matches. Yet was deemed good enough to come on, and Ger Brady and Nallen who played every game this year were not good enough to be one of SIX subs.
- the fact that the selected captain and vice-captain were not even on the team.
Blast, that was a great post, alot in what you say. I think Heaney definitely has a lot to offer. He is only 29/30. McDonald also, if he has the hunger. Brady looks like he cannot do it anymore. The game on Saturday passed him by and injuries seem to be too much of a problem. Nallen has been the greatest Mayo player of a generation. A gentleman and a legend. Sadly I think his time has come to say goodbye.
Now for the positive. JOM has had the young lads on training programmes which were monitored all winter. The changes he made did look positive and it was the young lads that grabbed their chances. A rest is what many of our fellas now need. Serious gym work come Septmeber/October. A defensive coach and here is the first stab at a 2008 model Mayo:
O'Malley
Howley
Cafferkey
Higgins
Mortimer
Cunniffe
Heaney
Harte
McGarrity
Kilcoyne
Hanley
Dillon

I'll agree with everything that Barney has said, particularly echoing his sentiments re the County Board.
Everything, bar the Goalkeeping position on next seasons team, obviously Clarke gets my vote here

Nice one!
Well done Derry and to the management! A great second half, perhaps the scoreline didnt really reflect the game in general but we really opened up near the end. Even had time for a bit of "champagne football!" :D Not often we are in that position!!
Fair play to the mayo support for bringin such big numbers. Really added to the occasion!
Big mayo full-forward Moran could be a big player next season in every sense, caused McCloy a few problems but it was a great tussle.
More thoughts on our championship exit at http://www.mayogaablog.blogspot.com/ (http://www.mayogaablog.blogspot.com/). Good luck to Derry in the next round - you should be well capable of taking care of Laois and can reasonably expect to make it to the semis. Anything can happen from there!
Barney, Awful light around wing forward.
1.Clarke -- needs to regain form, bad against cavan
2. Higgins
3. P Navin (i just dont know about this position most troublesome for some time)
4. Howley
5. D Kilcullen
6. L O'Malley
7. T Mort
8. McGarrity
9. J Kilcullen
10. Harte
11. Dillon
12. B Moran
13. CMcD
14. Hanley
15. A Moran
Cuniffe is there so is Heany, should be a form thing
i've gone for size in th hope of dominating possession, doing two thing, allowing us more scoring chances and the opposition less.
Also C Mort just hasnt done it for me, too much of the posing, not enough of the playing well

Have to see he doesn't convince me. I know he's not a full-back, but he's a poor corner-back, and at underage I was never overly impressed with him in the half-back line. He has had a very poor championship. At fault for a serious amount of scores.

Next Feburary is a long time away, but I agree with you Barney about Liam O Malley, his size is really against him. Although in Derry i thought he had improved no end from the Cavan game. These lads are really young and getting used to the helter skelter of championship. we reallly need to sort out 3 and 6. Unfortunately we will need to look outside the current squad i think for these men.The sticky plaster approach in these positions has gone on too long.
I see the juniors were beaten as well.
Wexford 2-14 Mayo 1-12
Mayo's bid to qualify for the All Ireland Junior football final ended in disappointment and defeat Sunday afternoon when they were beaten by Wexford despite leading by three points with fifteen minutes to go. Mayo's cause was also not helped by the sending off of Ronan McNamara, Pat Casey and Alan Costello in the second half.
I wouldnt be adverse to puttin Kilcullen at 6 again and Cunniffe at 5. Can any one give a list of senior players playing at 3 and 6 in county? seems to me that we are not too far away but definitely need just to find one or two more defenders
I have seen Paddy Navin's name meantioned for the full back slot a number of times, what are the pro's and con's regarding him?

More and more teams are going with the option of a target man full forward. From what I have seen of Paddy Navin his weakness seems to be under a high ball. I think he is a good player when attacking a quick low ball in to the full forward and has speed for that.

Navin is not the answer then if he is weak under the high ball. The high ball is a problem we have not dealt with since the All Ireland in 2004. If we could find a full back that is confident under the high ball it would solve alot of our woes in the back line.
I thought myself that James Kilcullen WAS confident under the high ball... Think he should feel hard done by to be honest.
What ever happened to Austin O'Malley, he should be considered for next year. Mickey Mullins will also be a contender for a forwards postion.
Very disappointing
Thought when we got level we'd pull away

Even though i'm a Rossie, i have to give huge credit to you Mayo lads who contribute on this site....I really admire the enthusiasm that ye display here for ye're county.
Mayo football has just had a bad weekend, and instead of sulking and effing and blinding, here ye are trying to discuss who else might be fit to play in the Mayo defence etc.
Ye're appetite for trying to discuss the solutions to the various problems in the Mayo team is a real eye opener. In all honesty, if Mayo ever see Sam again, there is nobody who will deserve it more than you Mayo boys on here.
I also am wondering why Austin O'Malley hasn't made a bigger impact by now. Also am beginning to wonder about the merits of handing Conor Mortimer a starting jersey. For my money, he rarely delivers on the big day.

Is this a new record for the board?
I haven't even heard a cuckoo yet.
Very very disappointed at Saturdays result, a pitiful way to go out of the championship. Only explanations I can find is that JOM and the management were using the last two games as an opportunity for players to prove themselves for the future (older players as well as newer ones) as a pre-curser to the formation of next years re-building panel or that, as they say, the team had went to the well too often and just didn't have the heart for battle. Judging by JOM's comments after the game, I think it may be the former, however I think there was some of the latter too.
Either way, it is no way to enter into a championship game no matter what the situation is.
However, as well as addressing players, we need to address the following common traits of Mayo teams (at all levels):
a) We continuously cant do the basics right - we consistently give away cheap possession, be it from kick-outs, free kicks, sideline balls or by simply kicking in hope.
b) too many of our defenders are marking from behind
c) players regularly holding on to possession far too long and running up cul-de-sac's
d) very few players seem comfortable kicking the ball
e) not cynical / hungry enough on front of goal (for goals or points)
d) Too many players cant catch a high ball first time
e) We cant take 45's
e) Slow starters plus very seldom dictate the tempo from the start (which I think is an essential for a successful team)
e) Far too little aggression
f) appear slow to learn from previous games, always appear to play with abandon and hope that form will pull us through
g) cant pull away from teams when we are in the driving seat
In a nut-shell, irrespective of the players we select the following fundamentals must be implemented into Mayo teams:
1) get the basics right (don't give away cheap possession, score 45's, only hold possession if in space, etc)
2) Set the tempo in every game
3) Get ruthless in pursuit of scores
If we don't get these fundamentals right, then we will continue with the relative success that we have come accustomed to. Unfortunately in a way, because we are one of the biggest counties in terms of playing personnel, we will always put together decent teams and regularly be there or there-abouts, but if we don't address these core issues then we will forever be also-rans when it comes to lifting Sam.
Mayo got beat because they let Paddy Bradley get going. If you stop him early his effect can be nullified. He scored 1-10 in an ulster match a couple of years ago against Monaghan (I think it was monaghan) yet they were tight from the start in the ulster semi and he was very quiet - tho he did get a sloppy goal
The 2 positions that are being debated most here are obviously 3 and 6. I'm surprised so many think 6 is still such an issue. I thought D Kilcullen improved an awful lot from the Cavan match and that was only a taster. With those 2 games at c'ship level behind him and no doubt he will get a run out in the league, I think he is our answer for that position. The main reason is because he is a very good passer of the ball, whereas Cunniffe likes to run everything. Cunniffe is a great prospect but out on the wings is where we are most likely to see him I think. As for full-back that's a bigger problem, at least we can name genuine options for 6. I would imagine next year we will see Cafferky given a run at that position. Provided he bulks up a good bit I think he will solve our problems there, next year is his last at U-21 so he should be well ready at that stage.
After being gutted on Saturday, a few days of calming down has softened the blow. The main positive is the young players we have in the county, there is some brillant talent, what most counties would do to have the talent we have on the way shouldn't be under-estimated. All isn't lost, next year really will be a fresh start where I think we will see a rested, hungrier, younger team have a right go at it again. We didn't want to admit it at the start of the season, but after last years hammering this year was a bit of a write-off and unfortunately that's the way it turned out.
Far from calming down from saturday . the stupidity of the loss on saturday. Just makes me more angry and the extent of the collapse leads me to disillionment. I think ew could well be looking at the 1970s all over again. remember when we eventually won a connacht again in the 80 we thought we were mighty to score a goal against kerry. Mchale nearly got mayo amn of the year for that . we are at the end of a generation of Great players and there not much to suggest we are have any luck in replacing them. Kilcullen was totally out of his depth campell ditto cunniffe wqas hung out to dry.hanley again flattered to decieve.
in the words of a famous hurling manager in the final 15 minutes mayo were like 'Sheep in a heap' and if that happen its ALWAYS the shepards fault.
to take All-Ireland finalist to that level shuld not even require a discussion about resignation it should have been written 5 min before the end of the game.
Remember with 15 minute to go this was a game you would have put money on mayo to win, but the confusion reigned down from O mahoney from the sideline soon put a stop to that . Bringing on 2 identikit unfit underplayed forwards in CMcD and KON threw whatever little shape we had out the window not to mention a badly out of position Gardiner was a sure sign of a manger who not only has lost the confidence of the team but also in himself.

Kilcullen a very good passer of the ball? Were you at the Cavan match? The amount of possession he turned over when not under pressure was scandalous!
Time for D Brady (34 next year), O'Neill (35 next year), Nallen (35 next year) to go for the good of the team. They all have been great servants to the county and it's sad that they won't win the ultimate prize.
I think Heaney (31 next year) and McDonald (33 next year) if he can stay injury free still have something to offer. The future lies with the U-21 teams for the last two years.

Absolute ridiculous shite of the highest order Rosnarun. You've surpassed yourself this time... ::)
hard to swallow that - heaney and mort were good as were Hanley and Howley & Cunniffe and B Moran decent - One tactical point of note - when padden was taken off mayo went to shreds I know people will have a canary when they read this but I dont think people in Mayo recognise the work he does defensivley and in the last 10 mins derry ran riot running through the middle where padden was operating as a second centre half back - I dont think he offers enough as an attacking role but I would look at him cb again next year or midfield - Play a defensive role much similar to the way Joe Macmahon does for Tyrone. we are far to attack minded all over the field it can leave us exposed... like in the last 10 mins
Still thought with 15 to go we were going to win it ...
Dillon and mort fall on the big day again - dissappointing

On Sunday all but one of the Derry forwards scored from play. In the Monaghan game Bradley and Muldoon were quiet because the ball never came into that half of the pitch...I mean Derry had 2 wides for the entire game...they didnt even get a chance to do anything and Bradley still got a goal. I think over the last two games Derry have shown there is no longer the same over-reliance on Paddy Bradley to score as we now have other forwards who can do the business...Devlin, Gilligan, Lynch, McGoldrick Muldoon...so I think your a bit off the mark here timmy!
The intervening days from Saturday have done little to quell a bad mood that will take some time to lift. It was an absolutely shocking performance yet again which only raises a serious amount of questions without providing any answers.
I don't know what has gone wrong with Clarke but he has been shocking this season and Saturday was the worst yet. You wouldn't see as bad in a minor match. His kickouts were brutal (found a Derry man every time) and if anyone can explain what he was at for the goals I'd be more than willing to listen but I doubt you can. Directly at fault for at least 2-3 or 2-4.
Cunniffe was quiet in the first half but turned in a good solid second half performance until injury forced him off. Definitely will be there again but I would prefer him in the half back line. Having himself and Keith Higgins as corner backs who both love to solo up the field would be a disaster.
Everybody knew that Liam O'Malley was not a full back before the game (apart from management it seems) and having faulted by having started him here serious questions have to be asked why the hell he was left to be roasted by Bradley for the full 70 mins? Crazy! I don't think he's up to it and would be surprised to see him back again.
Howley was quiet enough, showed some blistering pace with a burst up the field in the second that left people wondering if he would have been better off doing a 100m sprint.
Heaney was in and out of it, had difficultly against Muldoon and came into it a bit more when Muldoon was switched. I don't know why lads are writing him off for next year because he is still one of our top performers, only self imposed retirement or exile will see him absent from the 2008 teamsheet.
David Kilcullen. No more than the Cavan game, you wouldn't know he was on the pitch only for the number of times he turned over possession. Not big enough. Not strong enough. Not good enough. I know he's only young but he was not the answer this year.
If there's one man who can hold his head up high and is exempt from the crticism of the team's performance then it it Trevor Mortimer. The man had an absolute stormer, buliding on his perfrmance against Cavan. He showed great determination, leadership and a never say die attitude which was sadly lacking in some of his team mates. Threw himself into everything and never gave up. Saw off at least 3 different markers. If we had 14 more like him we would not be out of the Championship today.
Brady looked miles off the pace while Harte looked sluggish as well. We were beaten up a stick in midfield where Derry ruled the roost. They won most of both sides kickouts and created scoring chances as our lads were missing in action. Another area which needs to be addressed for next year. Hopefully, we will have a fit and healthy McGarritty back in action and O'Shea can make a break through.
While I'm not BJP's biggest fan, it's not fair on him the way he's been shifted from pillar to post. However, he was poor again on Saturday and I stand by my conviction that he's simply not up to it.
Hanley looked good at times in possession but, like the Cavan game, he tends to be marked absent at times. Whether it's a lack of concentration of poor positional play or what I don't know but he needs to be involved for the full 70.
Blast - Dillon had to go off injured at half time, he was doing alright up until that. However, he has been suffering from a loss of form all year and we need a lot more from him in 2008.
C Mortimer did his usual disappearing act. If we can get a reliable free taker then it will be bye bye Conor as he never delivers when the pressure is on, goes hiding in the corner and misses too many easy frees in general.
If I was Barry Moran I would have ate the head of my team mates at half time! The whole idea of him being there is to pump the ball in high and let him have at it. Instead we did the usual short passing and pricking around in the middle 8 until Heaney launched one forward we got a fluke goal. They then copped on that it was a good idea so they let in a few more. Moran had 1-2 by half time but that was it. He'll be here next year though.
Not one of Andy's better days and it is worrying that his finishing had been so poor in the last 2 games. One of our most important players though and was really up against it in SML.
Kilcoyne made a great impact when we had our one period of dominance at the start of the second half, drew level and looked like we might push on from there. Unfortunately he then got injured and we seemed to lose our rhythm after his departure. I felt so sorry for Campbell, what they did to him was a disgrace. It was not his fault and there were others who should have gone ahead of him. None of the subs made a telling contribution.
I know that I've been critical but, as I say, the form is bad and is likely to be for a while yet. We've been poor all year - compared to our potential and ability - and some players have been found lacking while we have been unfortunate with injuries as well. I suppose that goes to show the depth of our panel and answers the questions we wondered. While I've been giving out about the players, I would also have to ask questions about the management. Some of the decision making all year has been baffling and they failed to have back up plans in place when Plan A didn't work. Now, I'm not calling for JOM's head or anything but we could have had some silverware in the League and maybe progressed a bit further in the Championship. Hell, if we even performed it would have been something!
Anyway, I've typed a mini novel so I'll end my rant now.
Fair play to Derry though, ye were by far the better team on the day and I have to say a very sound bunch of people - fans, officials etc. Best of luck to ye!
P.S. If anyone wants to relive the torture, the game is being shown on Setanta on Wednesday evening at 6.50 p.m.

Well said Mr Power.
the point about saturday is that of the starting 15 only david brady and maybe David Heaney will probably retire next year the other 13 players are the future of mayo fotball, they should have been bursting their gut to impress jom .Did jom not motivate the players if not we are in serious bother

Well i have said on here that we need to toughen up and get more cynical as a team and you disagree with this style of football as well. We have more experience on the sideline besides JOM, good footballing men who have won at the highest level be it club or county... Its easy to critise without having solutions... Maybe bring back Peter Forde when he is finished with Galway to give us steel but that doesnt suit you either. To say that JOM had a part in MM losing his job is total shite, but if you know something we dont then let us know. I think this Mayo team had gone to the well once too often and the well was dry. following this break away from the limelight and a break from inter county football i am very hopeful about the future and i have no doubt the right men are in charge. We could be in a lot worse positions...look at Offaly....

The main reason is because he is a very good passer of the ball
Kilcullen a very good passer of the ball? Were you at the Cavan match? The amount of possession he turned over when not under pressure was scandalous!
I'd be interested to see how many times you've seen him play? As has been well covered at this stage, yes he was poor against Cavan and he very uncharacteristically gave the ball away a mountain of times. As I said he was an awful lot better in Derry. The move of the match, where he gave a great diagonal ball to Hanley who in turn gave a great diagonal ball, it was the only highlight Tommy Lyons bothered to show on the Sunday game, was an example of what we can expect to see. He will get an awful lot better and his passing ability will come to the fore, but I would doubt you have seen much of him, in fact I would be certain you have never seen him at club level given your quote above. As for the person who said he isn't big enough or strong enough? At 19 that is understandable, but at the same time he is 6'1 or 6'2 and is alot more poweful than alot of backs already, the extra power will come with time. Like it or not, Kilcullen, Cunniffe, Howley are the future. After a few years trying, Howley is finally showing us what he can do, so judge Davy K after 2 games if you want!
rosnarun........if you are that upset at losing John Maughan, ye are more than welcome to take him back. Please take him back, we're begging ye!!!!!!!!

Ok, I presume that you are aiming this at me? For the record, I have seen him play at both minor and U-21 levels for Mayo and at club level as well. If you read my post again, you will see that I did say that he is still only young but that he is not the answer

First of all rosnarun, the above is not a personal insult. All he is saying is that your talking a ridiculous load of shite which I am beginning to agree with.
The only personal insults I am seeing lately on any Mayo threads is your hurtful personal insults aimed at John O Mahoney.
We all understand that JOM inherited an older team and he gave his chance to the older guys and they havnt got it left in them because of too many years of trying.
We are at a stage of team building and getting beaten by Derry and Galway showed up the players more than anything else. It was a blessing in disguise because it finally allows the older players to step aside and it has allowed us to blood new players.
Even if we did beat Derry and Galway we still had no chance of going all the way so an early break is a good thing. Im happy for the players as they finally get a few months off. They hardly had any time to breath with Mayo going so far in the championship in the last few years. They deserve the break.
Going back to you constant O Mahoney bashing. Its getting boring, and its doesnt seem to be all about football either. You often refer to him as "The Blue Shirt" and make out that all his motives are politically motivated. Its obvious that by calling him that, you have some sort of chip on you shoulder about Fine Gael. (And no I dont support them either).
Give O Mahoney a chance to prove himself. He did all he could do with the current crop.
The team, as it was since '04, were on the right side of the draw to reach two All Ireland finals. If they were on the other side of the draw in those years they would not have reached All Ireland finals.
A very good Mayo team, but not a great Mayo team and I'd imagine that if the '04/'06 team were to come up against the '96 team in their prime they would have got their holes kicked also.
What am I on about? The team over-acheived to a certain extent, there is no doubt about that, talk of O'Mahony having to walk for taking the All Ireland finalists to this level are rubbish.
We knew last year that there were huge problems at no.3 and no.6, they had not been addressed, but I don't think it's through lack of trying out different options on the managements part.
IntoDwest has the best post on this board, time for a long term rebuilding plan

I know you have been saying the same thing about O'Mahony for ages, that's one of the reasons I think your opinions are based more on his politics than his managerial record. You have been bleating on here for weeks if not months about how he's a disaster and should never have got the job. Almost all your posts included some snipe about FG as well - granted, your last post didn't, but the majority had 'blue-shirt' or 'Franco' or some other crap that has nothing to do with football.
I don't think he's God - if you look back on my posts I said some criticism is justified. Particularly in regards to leaving the experimentation until after the Galway game.
Now, there can be several theories as to why he left it so late. It could be that the election took most of his attention, and that's entirely possible.
It could also be that he knew this was the end of the road for the current team, but out of respect for the older players, he didn't just throw them on the scrap heap. He gave them their fair chance. When it was shown their day was past, he changed things.
In my opinion, O'Mahony had more or less written off this championship. It was a time to give some of the older players their final chance, and introduce new blood.
I think next year will see a much more settled team by the time the Championship comes around. As I said before, I think the right management team are in place to build the next Mayo team. You were calling for resignations after the Galway game. No matter what way you look at it, that's hardly objective. You have a chip on your shoulder about the man, and it ain't all to do with football.
There are a couple of posters on this thread who clearly have a problem with O'Mahony's politics.
It's childish in the extreme.
They should sod off over to McHale Park.com, the discussion board founded by two Mayo journalists with an anti-O'Mahony agenda.
I couldn't care less what Party he's a member of..as long as he's able for the job in the long-term, which I believe he is.
Could we end the cheap political sniping, please?
Too much football played by some lads has left them dull.I am only a fan and I have had enough to do me for a while. All the losses have destroyed the drive in most of our players and its apparent that new lads and a new approach to the way we play the game is needed.Top scorers in one game not getting a look in against derry says volumes for the players will.
Naming a starting 15 for next year with cmort, dillon and andy moran as starters has us off on the wrong foot straight away,if they are not up to it this year with all the training they sure as hell will not improve that much by next year so maybe a few new lads should be tried.B moran looks like he has the goods, yet they starved him of the ball.Cmac is surely done now, he got 10 minutes when it was all over and must be disgusted.Kilcoyne and hanley can be greats if they get more vicious in their game, gardner may be tried s a forward because he has skill and is tall enough too but his defending days look over.James kilcullen should be kept at fullback, size and strenght are vital, maybe not a darren fay but still our only real option in the position.Midfield needs mcgarrity about 2 stone heavier with leg and shoulder muscle, same for harte, brady is finished at midfield, fullforward option maybe because of height and strenght and only as a target man if all else has failed or moran is hurt.Seamus o se needs to be brought in and gain weight too.The real star for Mayo will be moran at ff if he gets stronger and the team play him the ball high.Nallen is finished, heaney should be ok for another go but is surely tiring of the circus and strains, kevin oneill was an allstar in 1993 so do the math and be realistic about the answer, simply too old for another go and better off joining the exodus. All in all we had a bad year despite the league results, we won a few by a point and were perhaps believing it could be patched up but too many lads have been beaten too often and the doubts surface when it gets tough.
I thank all Mayo players for the wonderful days, tyrone 2004, dublin 2006 etc, its time to move on without some lads but those lads would be much happier seeing a mayoman lift sam from the stand in 2009 than be on the pitch themselves after losing the final in 2008..
MAYO WILL RISE AGAIN IN A FEW YEARS, WE NEED TO SUPPORT THE PLAYERS AND BE REALISTIC IN TERMS OF EXPECTATION.

O mahoney had the 'chance to prove himself ' in the championship which he saw himself as being able to write off . this is what im referring to as JOM's God Complex. he is appointed manager and then decides to 'write off ' the main competition hes supposed to be playing in?. really sounds like you are using any means to Justify the Messiah here.
Polictics has nothing to do with it other than to use as astick to beat him with .
My Criticism of JOM goes back long before he decide to run for the Blueshits. In fact at one stage he was odd on to run for FF.
Hes the Wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time and like at end of his last tenure of mayo It looks like he going to leave the team in a very poor condition going nowhere.
If any one can tell me how he has improved the team this year please tell me , Or how he desevres to be sacked any less than M Moran was at the end of last year im dying to know.
Losinng AIF to Kerry is not an embarresment but the manner in which we lost to derry and galway( who were then beaten by sligo FFS) and losing to donegal at any time now that real embarresment.

Rosnarun
A couple of things. If you are to persist with your short sighted criticism of O'Mahony, you might note the correct spelling of his name.
Secondly, could you refer me to the bookmaker who was offering odds on that O'Mahony would run for Fianna Fáil, or indeed any newspaper articles re same? I would be interested in finding out who was touting him for Fianna Fáil because no-one I know ever doubted his affiliation to FG.
There must be more eejits in Mayo than I thought if someone was backing O'Mahony to run for FF so heavily that he was odds-on.

BULLSHIT its that. Your hatred has little to do with football, its a personal & political vendetta.
I somehow doubht he ever had any connection with FF, as his father was from West Cork & was a Collins Man & Fine Gaeler as Johnno is.

Fair enough Willie, maybe I interpreted your comment wrongly. I just disagree a little, I thought he was worth a look this year, and physically he wasn't really found out, it was his turnover of possession against Cavan that was his biggest problem. Anyway, I think he is definitely the answer for the future, he has a good direct style that is really needed if we are to change our style of play from the short-passing shite.
As for this political talk lads (well one person really), how long are we saying this not the forum for it. True, Johnno had a bad first year in charge, I think we all expected alot more and yes most Mayo fans will cut him a bit more slack because I think he has earned that with his track record. He is the right man for the job, he will get it right, the only thing we learned this year and I think it dawned on him up in Derry is that the job is alot bigger than he first thought. I would agree with McStay, it's not just the older lads that need to go, some of the younger ones have already played so much football and have been found wanting when they going got tough. 2 exceptions though from the last game, Heaney and T Mort definitely still have alot to offer, whether the likes of Heaney wants to offer any more is another thing.
I'm not Rosnarun biggest fan (no offence Ros) but Ill back him up on this point. Sam long before you started posting on this board Ros made it clear about his thoughts on JOM as a manager for mayo. This was before he was nominated for election as a FG candidate. I remember debates over about maughan and calling for JOM myself to be appointed as manager and Ros was consistent all the way through that he did not want him there. I don't think it was politically motivated back then and i don't think it is now. All the politics is now is another stick beat him with. You know my views on JOM and the election but I dont want to go back into that.

If ya dropped the political anti-Fine Gael crap people might address the subject of management.
I depite what you may think disagreed with the manner that Moran & Morrison where got rid of, but it is time to build & we will never get the process started if we don't cop the feck on and realise Sam at best is 3 years away. Are we going to sack John O'Mahoney because of this year, when will it stop. I think I read somewhere, that Mayo have had more management changes over the last 25 years than Manchester City.
mayo are out, get over it people
Did you just register to tell us that??? Thanks for the info.
Mayo are never out, just regrouping, smell the fear :D
I still havent heard one positive argument as to what good he has done. why should sam be 3 years away we were in 2 of the last 3 finals. we have a good supply of u-21's coming through a huge resivoir of club players and a passion/desire/need within the county few others can match . we also have the countries best player in Ciaran Mcdonald ,
JOM had one huge advantage over recent Mayo manager in that he truly had the pick of the counties best playr un like others inrecent years , Tmort d brady CMcD all have had limited involvement in the last few championships but o mahoney failed to bring the best out of them and ignored /Under used real talents such as K omalley gardiner kilcoyne d geraghty and Marty Mcnicholas and used 2 of his own clubmen who are far fromready for the fray.
ANd worst of all hes seem incapable of motivating this team which prev was never even an issue . do you think omanhonies team would have made that comback against dublin last year based on last weeks perforance against what will prove to be a poor derry team, not a chance

Maybe our county's best arent good enough, i think the victory against Dublin had more to do with Dublin collapsing than with Mayo coming back from the dead. Also a lot of that team were in the last chance saloon when it came to All-Ireland medals and they fought one last fight. It didnt matter who was in charge this year, the players simply have too many miles on the clock without any time away from football and the appetite for the fight was gone. What proved it to me was Trevor Mort. in the championship this year,he was like a new man becuase of the little amount of football he played last year. It just seems we are going round in circles with this debate now.

1. The players for one are all a year older than last year.
2. Ciaran McDonald is NOT the countries best player.
3. Peadar Gardiner is a back who can attack but not defend.
4. Geraghty is far too small.
5. Kenneth O'Malley is just coming back from injury.
6. Kilcoyne is an excellent forward, but as of yet he never tracks back to help with the defence, O'Mahoney is trying to train him to do this & rest assured once he improves in this aspect he will be playing alot.
7. Marty Mac is a great talent, but he needs to show it more at County level when he gets yet another shot.
8. David Brady is no longer anything more than a bit player, & he has not been @ his best of late.
9. Our midfield is seriously crippled in comparrison to 2004 & 2006 because of Ronan McGarritys illness.
10. Under-21s dont suddenly become great Senior players without time & coaching.
11. Our so called traditional style of football has not delivered an All-Ireland in 56 going on 57 years.
12. O'Mahoney has set up shadow panels who are all on skills, weight training and correct diets, it will show over the next two years.
13. In reality I'm sure Moran & Morrison are looking @ their harsh treatment as a blessing in disguise.
14. We tried players that looked great in the Club Championship such as Devanney, he wasn't up to the pace.
15. Keith Higgins was a massive loss (more so to the hurlers)
16. A new set of players take time to gel together.
17. Drop the Political Bullshit & people might take your football related argument more seriously.

While I'm prepared to acknowledge that you're consistent, you are descending into a desparate rant here. For starters, T Mort had a good year and McDonald hasn't effectively got over the injury sustained before last year's AIF. Gardiner is limited defensively. McGarrity's difficulties are well known.
It's simplistic in the extreme to think that just because Mayo played in the All-Ireland final last year they should go on and perform to the same level this year because we have a new manager, with a good track record, at the helm. I can't disagree that his eye might have been off the ball until after the election.
I understand your frustration, but what's another year or two after over half a century without Sam? Mayo had fundamental problems last season which weren't shown up until Kerry rolled over them. That could well have happened again this year.
Would you have preferred that outcome to our season? Another All-Ireland humiliation. Would you really prefer that to an exit through the backdoor.
How did exactly did Moran engineer Mayo to come from seven points down against Dublin? Had Jason Sherlock not hit the crossbar in the first-half Mayo would have been ten points down and out the door.
There isn't another country in Ireland (bar Kerry) what wouldn't take on O'Mahony. Your constant references to his job and political affiliation suggest you are motivated than something other than football.
O'Mahony is as shrewd as they come and is probably hurting over this defeat. As a, TD it's not as if he can keep his head down. He will now go away and plan for the future with the meticulousness for which he is renowed. Remember, if he doesn't land Sam, the Mayo football public willl show him what they think of that when they go to vote at the next General Election
My personal preference is that this is done without Conor Mortimer if he continues in his current vein of form. One point from a free is a shocking return for someone once rated as one of the best fowards in the country, but that type of display is not limited to the O'Mahony regieme.
Regardless of what one thinks of the manger, it's time to look to the long-term.

What this Guy used to have he shouwed no signs of it this year.
Ros, it is pointless trying to explain a positive argument to you when A) you won't listen to it and B) your own argument is as one-sided and bias as above. You refuse to take into account the fact that the players O'Mahoney took on were even more scarred than those Moran inherited. Last years final was an absolute humiliation, it set us back a long long way, even further than we thought at the time. What is the point discussing the Dublin comeback now? the Kerry slaughter happened afterwards and is more relevant at this stage. O'Mahoney didn't have a good year, that speaks for itself, but when the writing was really on the wall, he started to rebuild. You won't accept that he was right to let the older lads have one more go against Galway. Most of us think he was right to give them another shot, they failed, so he re-jigged the team in the middle of the c'ship. This appeared a bit daft yes, but I think he realised it's better to look to the future straight away. The re-building has now started for 2008, not that he deliberately wanted to go out of the 2007 c'ship, but when you realise mid-stream that the crew on board don't have what it takes, better to get the right men in at some stage. Ciaran Mac was the best player in the country in 2004, not since then can we genuinely argue he is anymore. I agree with Fishead Sam on Gardiner and Geraghty, just not up to it. You simply won't accept that alot of forces were against Johnno this year, all this crap about him inheriting a great bunch of players is a load of sh1te, some of them were great but don't have it in the heads or legs anymore. The U-21s are the future but it will take time to get them up to the standard. A summer off will do all of them alot of good, they just don't have the desire and even a coach as brillant as O'Mahoney can't make them want it. If we are still having this discussion in a years time you may have a point, I am going to wait until next season before casting judgement, by which time I expect us to be a serious outfit again and having a genuine cut at chasing Sam. This year like 2005 is a hangover year in my opinion, it will pass and we will come back stronger. If you want to keep going round in circles in the mean-time bringing up the same old arguments be my guest.

Great post
Ok lets manipulate the stats a bit in favour of Rosnarun. John O'Mahony was involved in 5 championship matches in his last two championship season, one with Galway, the other with Mayo. Results - lost to Mayo by 6, beat one of the poorest Louth teams to play the game, lost to Tyrone by 7/8 points, thrahsed by Galway by 7 points, beat an awful Cavan team, lost to Derry by 10 points. Hardly inspiring stuff.
BUT it is the long-term programmes that we are told, and know are being put in place that makes people happy to stick with this project. He was on Newstalk last night and said that he will have the young players back sooner rather than later. You cannot be thrashed in two All Irelands within 3 years and just ignore the real facts. You lose out for a reason. We were way off the pace and was it not for being lucky enough to draw Fermanagh, and getting a run on the Dubs those days may never have come.
Now to the nonsense. Firstly Peadar Gardiner cannot defend, but putting him up front is ridiculous. He cannot kick the ball. A bit of a problem. He is just one of our players that has this problem. Technical deficiencies must be overcome if we are to achieve anything, and that starts with the very basics of the game.
Direction must also be brought to our game. It should be carefully structured. Part of the problem with our team and our defending is an unwillingness to work. Have the players that dying ambition to win an All Ireland, or to succeed to reach their maximum ability? I don't know. There is no reason why the work ethic of a team like Tyrone cannot be introduced to our play. If you don't have it you are of flawed character when it comes to playing football. You look at our lads after they concede scores, miss points. They are running around like the proverbial sheep, nobody cajoling, leading.
We need to be metronomical in our play. If there is a free in area X it should be taken by player Y. Every contingency should be planned for. This takes time. On Saturday numerous times David Brady and Trevor Mortimer wasted possession from dead balls kicked aimlessly. There was no direction. David Brady has been a great player for the county, as have many of the older lads, but do they want to take direction? Will they listen?
I truely believe that if you become so analytical about your play and introduce that work ethic to your training, all preparation and your game, the true skills will emerge.
If any of us are realistic, even in hindsight, the year was going to come to a sudden and painful end. We blooded three 19 year olds who did not play any intercounty football this year. Criticisms of Cunniffe, Kilcullen or Hanley are unfair. They were learning their trade against players that had years of experience and full season of training ahead of them. You can't just throw fifteen fellas together in July and not expect to be caught out. JOM knew that was going to happen, whatever you say about him he is nobody's fool.
And so the meticulousness that I mention is something that JOM is renowned for. He has started the ball rolling. A purge of last Summers heroes would not have been easily swallowed last February. The evidence is there to do that now albeit that a degree of change could have started by having some younger players as subs.
The political issue is pertinent. It did interfere with arrangements for Salthill. There can be little doubt about that. But that is understandable. I don't agree with the way Moran was fired. I do believe that it was an appointment of convenience for both JOM and the County Board who have blue leanings. However the election is over. Many wanted this man in the job for years. He took over an over-achieving team who even at their peak under JOM would probably have struggle to win All irelands without the two or three top-class forwards needed to lead a championship winning side. The time for bitching is done. I'm going to place my trust in the man. I do believe in some of the young lads and I hope that a burning desire to succeed will mean that come 2009 or 2010 a town full of Roscommon men will have to spend 12 months looking at the TD living at the edge of the town polishing Sam Maguire every Monday morning before he packs his bags for another week serving his constituents. And if he was to achieve the ultimate John O'Mahony would have done more for the county of Mayo than any politican could ever achieve. The desparation for an All Ireland in the county is crippling at this point in time. I hope we have the coolest head at the helm who will stick with the job and be patient and see it through with that touch of luck that will be needed.
great post barney
Barney, you wrote what I wanted to say, but couldn't put into words! Fair play to you.
Hopefully that's the end of the discussion now, JOM an plan for next year, and we can all turn to the club championships.
I think we've taken up enough of this thread - the poor Derry lads have hardly got a word in ;)

Well Barney, that certainly has brightened up my morning. That is exactly what we neet, optimism looking forward. Deep down I know John O'Mahony is the man to turn things around, we may not do it next year but 2009 I feel we will have a group of lads who will be hungry enough to ate the handles of the Sam Maguire cup!!!

Johno's been there and done that. Even stood for pictures with anyone in the town who wanted their photo taken with Sam.
Barney super post, I dont expect huge things next year, even though we could be there or there abouts, the following year then could be good. To be honest I wasnt expecting much from this year, what with all the injuries during the league with new managment added to that I doubted we'd do so good this year, granted I was hoping for a longer run this year but it will probably do a bit of good to the lads getting the long break for the rest of the Summer! As is said many times Keep the Faith!
I too agree with 90% of waht barney said including for the 1st time ever on P gardiner which make me think most people didnt read his post correctly.
you'll all be delighted to know this is My last say on the subject untill the couty board kick him out or he 'resigns'
in summarry
the wrong man was appointed for the wrong reasons at the wring time and he accepted it for the wrong reason.
he fecked up a team of potential All ireland winners in to a team that gets beaten by the likes of derry and godhelp us donegal. At least in the end he brought in a few new faces after he realize what a bags he made of things but then he completly chickened out with 15 minutes to go and tried to revert to Mickey morans team and mayo went from being level to being humiliated as they lost all shep and looked like headless leaderless chickens and poor aidan campbell was made a laughing stock of.
BUT yet people on this board are still trying to make the facts fit the Jom is till our lord god and Messiah see below.
and BTW when id thisd master stoke Of Kevin O neill as captain going to pay off

It has no longer anything to do with rational debate. :'(
Lads I'm going to pull across one or two quotes to the Mayo football thread, then lock this thread, sorry to any of the Mayo or Derry folk who may want to continue on the match.
