Title: Shaving equipment
Post by: sans pessimism on November 14, 2025, 09:39:35 AM
Is it my imagination, or has the quality of razor blades gone way down.Even shaving with the top brands feels like I'm using a blade thats been used a hundred times-else I'm just getting old and leathery!🙈

Was thinking the same myself this morning. Nicked the face of myself. The fecking price of them too you'd be looking someone from gilette to come and shave ya.

This is a poignant post! Disaster of a shave this morning, using a Harrys blade.

Pure crap.

Pure crap.

I've been using Harrys for years with no issues.

I don't shave every day though and let a fair bit of stubble to build before I shave.

Probably the most cost effective of the big brands but I've moved to double edge razor, Paraso shave cream and shaving brush. Its a bit slower but a better shave and skin feels less inflamed after.

Japanese feather or straight razor.

Cartridges are a scam

Definitely.  I use those Gillette Mach 3 (or some such number). They're feckin' expensive and don't seem to last nearly as long.  Any decent alternatives??  I usually shave every day bar a Saturday.

I did the same years ago - much better job. Saying that I grew a beard out of laziness and I can't pluck up the courage to shave it off again.

More bearable to tackle it with the DE razor than a cartidge type thats for sure.

Mach 3 I find best. I don't shave everyday so I get weeks out of  the same razor

I've resorted to shaving while in the shower lately. The heat  of the water softening the skin  Seems to  make it easier. Also   I can't be arsed  frigging about with the  sink and the mess  that that ensues

Frig me but shaving is  a pain in the hole

Would have shaved every day for work, never missed, but since covid and using masks at the time i basically stopped and shaved on a Friday and Sunday and that was that... Skin wasn't bad anyways but the less shaving makes it for me anyways, so much better, but I'd be using Nivea for many years also so probably both help..

I would never buy anything other than the best Gillette, there is a new one for sensitive skin and that's the best I've used. buy in baulk and you'll get them far cheaper

It's the lump hammer you're trying to make look bigger not the baws. My next door nighbour is a beautician and I'd love to ask her to give me the once over (the nether regions that is) for a professional shave but haven't the baws to ask...

The best Gillette are decent enough alright but I've found the best to be the bic 3 disposable ones. They're totally different to the really cheap and lethal single blade bic. Used to get them in boots but don't see them many places now so I buy them online. Sensitive or comfort, either ones are good and they're not expensive. I would tend to shave every day Monday to Friday and then leave it at the weekend.

Used to be an everyday man and double and treble blades were the only answer. Now I'm an every week man and a single blade is the only answer - prevents / reduces any clogging that the multiblades always suffer with I find.

Ditched my full beard of 13 years in January. Have shaved every day this year. Have dark thick hair, although recently it's a shade of white... I shave at the end of my shower, in the shower. Over the years I've tried them all. Single blades, 4 blades, 5 blades but the Mach 3 has always been the winner and I buy the multiple cartridges in Costco 20 pack for $45. Each blade lasts around 3 weeks before she gets replaced

Razor, some brand of Gillette shave foam, and a brush for lather and lifting the skin up. For me its finding the right cadence between shaves that prevents the irritation of the skin. If I'm shaving too infrequently the hair is getting a chance to dig in as it regrows so If I left it to the second day to shave I am going to have issues. So it's every day or no days.

Switched to Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 from Gilette recently, they kick Gilette's ass imo. Shave the dome twice a week and shave face every other day, 1 blade has been doing me a fortnight (Gilette's fancy equivalent changed weekly). Cant remember what i paid the last time but on offer atm, 9 blades & handle for £15 on Amazon.

I used Dollar Shave Club blades until I found out they were Israeli.  Now I use Schick blades. DSC blades were cheap to buy, but only lasted about 2 or 3 shaves. Schick cost a bit more, but I use them about a dozen times before they start to feel dull. And I shave more than most because I also shave my head in the mornings. Far better value.

Use gilette fusion, so bough cheap ones from Teamu, got them, looked exactly the same, clicked them in, had a shave.... Would have been better off using a butter knife.

I bought the multi pack Mach 3 in one of our major chain stores, and had the same feeling as yourself after shaving-just shite quality.
On recommendation, I bought the Harrys multi pack online-same result. It would make you believe thaat they're all made in the same place, just with a different label stuck on them for marketing!

Shave 5 out of 7 days and give myself a break at the weekend (unless I'm on a promise...so I'm generally stubbly by Sunday night shave!!!). Orange Macs whatever number they are and like someone said above I do it at the end of the shower,  which I like scalding hot, so always well softened. Generally no issues with nicks and would get a month out of a blade.

Some right Grizzly Adamses in here. If I don't shave the head and face every morning I feel like a yard brush by 5:00pm. Have a shower afterwards to get all the foam away, throw on the lotion afterwards. Couldn't bate it.

I use the Lidl 5-blade razors and find they're grand. I always shave in the shower - two to three times a week. My routine is shampoo hair and beard, conditioner rubbed in to stubble and left. Wash the rest of me then rinse the conditioner, apply Nivea sensitive gel -always gel, never foam - then shave. moisturising lotion afterwards. Works a treat. The shampoo and conditioner helps soften the bristles.
