Title: Civil war/war of independence
Post by: tonto1888 on July 23, 2023, 07:35:26 AM
On a wee weekend away down in Wicklow here and looking at some of the history. Made me realise the war of independence and civil war era is something I do not know enough about. Can anyone recommend any good books or docs? Or even from earlier periods? Much appreciated

My first read was Guerilla Days in Ireland -Tom Barry, no better place to start.

Excellent book and have read it a few times. An excellent insight into that era.

Tim Coogan's   "Ireland in the 20th Century" is good on this and subsequent developments.  Lengthy enough, but an easy read nonetheless.

The most comprehensive read is Atlas of the Irish Revolution. After that, local histories are some of the best sources. I also would use the Bureau of Military History archives for first hand accounts.

This is a good resource for anyone with relatives who served in the fourth northern division.

The Fourth Northerners: and the Irish Revolution https://amzn.eu/d/27d1HGz

The Atlas of the Irish Revolution is a superb book, as is their famine atlas.

Between Two Hells by Diarmaid Ferriter is also very good.

Not in the free state, they'd rather cover up that particular period

Northern Ireland: The Orange State by Michael Farrell
First published in 1976 - quite expensive to buy nowadays (if available) so might be best look for it in a library.
I used to have a copy but can't lay my hands on it now.

Michael Farrell was leader of People's Democracy in late 1960's, early 1970's.
