Title: Latest NI Balls Up
Post by: Dougal Maguire on December 09, 2016, 09:59:34 AM
Seems the newly commissioned Strangford Ferry vessel, which was purpose built at a cost of £6M, can't be used as it is unable to dock at high tide as the ramps don't drop down low enough to allow vehicles to disembark.

Built to specification according to the boat manufacturer........

Tax payer will end up picking up the tab on a very fundamental mistake which is strange as the other boat of a similar design would barely be 6 years in service!!

without knowing jack about the project can they not just install an adjustable hydraulic ramp on the edge of the jetty to meet it?

They probably could but it sort of defeats the point of having a "purpose built" ferry if they then have to alter the jetty.

You'd be wrong then. It serves the nationalist community at the tip of the Ards penninsula for various functions, business, schooling access to Downpatrick and so forth.

It wouldn't be used solely by one community TBH, but in terms of the political status, the DUP would hold the majority in Westminster elections (also includes Newtownards, Bangor and so forth) but would return SDLP and Independent Nationalists on a regular basis in Local Government elections.

Down County Board spend quite a few bob crossing that lough in a given year, not to mention the local clubs.

In a month we had the Charter NI scam, the Heat DUP craic, the year we had the DUP/ NAMA tale it was fair game to query if the Ferry was another DUP scam.

The Ards peninsula is class with the hurling clubs . Very different around Newtownards.  That part of NI was so far ahead of the south 100 years ago. Things changed. Now you would feel sorry for Unionists .

You've been then ? On the Ballgalget road, or up in Rubane on the McKenna road? I'd say not much has changed around those areas in 100 years!  ;)

Danny Kennedy, Ulster Unionist was the Minister in Charge when this fiasco happened.  He had no real interest in his job and just phoned in his contributions to that crucial department. I know a few people who are high up there and they said he was totally useless and they longed to get Conor Murphy back.  At least he was hands on and took an interest.
