Leitrim, then, by my reckoning, will be the longest county out of Croke Park (I am lumping hurlers and footballers).

A good, what, 13 years?

Was 10 years for Cavan.

Directions

Croke Park is situated in north Dublin between Drumcondra and Ballybough and is bordered by Jones's Road to the west, Clonliffe Road to the north, St. James Avenue to to the east and the Royal Canal to the south.

The stadium is well served by public transport.  Bus, Rail, DART and LUAS can all bring you to less than a 15 minute walk from the ground.  Croke Park have recently launched an initiative to encourage greater use of public transport by visitors to the stadium.  A specially commissioned map has been launched to demonstrate how close Croke Park is to a host of public transport solutions.  Croke Park is situated in a residential area with only limited parking available on match days and local residents expect to use this parking.  And remember the authorities will be continuing their policy of clamping in the area on match days. Why risk spoiling a great day out?

Onsite parking at the stadium is only available for non-match and non-concert events.

There is ample parking for asses and carts in the grounds of Clonliffe College. A glossary of driving and parking terms and how they are translated for use with articulated donkey-and-cart units follows:

Start = Yaaaah
Reverse = Hike
Go forward = G'up
Go forward a little more = G'up owwa dah
Stop = Wo
Stop immediately! = Wo ya hoor ya

Unlike yourselves in Meath we in Cavan have moved on from the donkey and cart.We now have whats known in the wider world as automobiles and buses, so you see theres no need for the stone throwing, they're not big bad monsters, just forms of transport.Some day ye will appreciate that and tie up the auld donkey.  :D

Oops - sorry about that. My Tommy Cooper radar is not yet fine tuned. Prob never will be  :(

So in other words Cavan in any shape or form haven't graced Croke Park since Aug 97. And the county with the longest absence until now.

The only problem I have with the game in Croker is that it is on after Meath and Monaghan, still don't know who I want to win. I hate them both and it's hard to even say which team we'll hammer the most.  :-\

The Perfect result would be a draw after 70 minutes, adding in a few absolute massive brawls with all the Team/subs getting involved,
resulting in lots of members of both teams being suspended for the League Final,and most of their respective championships.
i think i prefer Monaghan to Meath,The Bitterness over August 1997 hasnt subsided in Ballyhaise yet.

Thankfully I only had to travel through Nobber, where I just pointed and laughed in 1997, as opposed to Kells where all hell was breaking loose (or so I heard). So I didn't have to put up with any of the stone throwing etc. But being from Shercock, my hatred for Monaghan was there long before I could even walk. Its only now that the hate is surfacing for Meath, now that we've played them quite a few times in the league and championship in the last few years. Its just so hard to pick. I'll go for a draw with mass brawls too. :)

Actually, great point there. Let's reminisce to that heady day in Clones two summers ago. The sun was shining, and Meath filled their togs. Wow, the stench. Sickening.

While they trudged home with their tales between their legs, we didn't bother throwing stones at their cars. We're a football county, not a glorified halt ;)

Shotstopper, I'm fortunate enough to have Armagh blood on both sides, so I know my way quite well!

When Monaghan won the Division 2 final in '05 I was slagging the boys telling them to get off the pitch before the 'Senior Game'!

Great to see Cavan back in Croker, I was at the Cavan V Kerry game in Croker in 1997, so glad you lot are back.

I have to admit I must have done a very cockey (thats why we cant win Sam) Mayo thing, was only 17, jumped on the train to Dublin wearing my Mayo jersey, met a second or third cousin from Dublin and went up on the Hill with the Cavan fans, supported them that day, to be honest there was at least 10 other Mayo jersies on the Hill that day (probably for the same reason as I was).

I had gone up to the match because I wanted to see who we where going to beat in the Final Cavan or Kerry, we hadn't even beaten Offaly in the other semi yet. O how that backfired.

Cockeyness has been bate out of me by Kerry over the years, but it pops up from time-to-time

In Fairness Sam i was of the opinion that if we could manage to beat Kerry,we would take Mayo or Offaly without that much trouble,so you werent alone in being cocky in 1997!!!  :P

I don't think you were wrong either BH man, although I think Mayo would have played alot better against us in the final than they did against Kerry. They'd have fancied their chances against us whereas they were a bit tentative against Kerry, even worse than they were against Offaly.

The All-Ireland was wide open that year for sure but the short passing game that brought us there was what undid us in the end. McCabe didn't play well. Carolan reverted to type and relaxed after realising he wouldn't be dropped again following the powerhouse display against Donegal - was about 70% from frees that day. Curley waved play on when Larry was streaking in on goal but getting the jersey wrenched off him. Larry was good enough to continue and rattle the bar despite being dragged off balance, to take the bad look off a poor non-decision, and Russell finished it a few minutes later after a Fitz pass exposed Kermath for the weak link he was. The nervous way Carolan was playing he'd have missed the peno anyway.

We missed the boat. Such is life.

Maniac, that was actually Jayo who got closelined by Hassett and the ball broke to Larry who hit the crossbar, it was about the only time I ever saw the advantage rule applied in gaelic, we lost our nerve after halftime and reverted to type, endless shortpassing and the move of Fitzy to midfield did for us. Still, a great day and Cahill's goal was almost worth the admission alone..

Lets hope Cavan's latest game in Croker ends in a better result than their last one  :P

I remember 97 well, I just knew we would win that year. The relaxed air of Stephen King walking slowly onto the field with his team showed a lack of passion for the day, I always thought. They did put it up to us however and for a brilliant bit of skill by Maurice Fitz in fielding and then a great pass to Mike Frank Russell for the goal it could have finished differently.

But 97 was a special year for Maurice and Mayo could not get near him in the final and thankfully it ended our 11 years famine. That was a good Cavan team and they deserved more success than just one Ulsrter title.

Not so sure about the current Cavan bunch, but hopefully they will get back to something of their glory days.

This Cavan team has alot of very talented footballers,Its a bit on the small side though,not many men over 6ft.
we will be giving away size and power to the Rossies but id expect us to have a much faster all round team.

I was actually sitting just on the 13 yard line on the Hogan when Jason was tugged back, Hasset nearly had the jersey off Jason's back. Definate penalty. Was absolutely ripping after it. As for Cahill's goal, what a peach!

Wasn't best pleased myself.

Someone mentioned how the Cavan heads dropped as well. Too true. The fizz went out of the whole thing once Kerry got the grips on in the second half, it was a meek enough surrender in the end and that shot off the bar was the last kick back we made. We had enough experience on the field in King and Carolan and Damien Reilly (one of my favourite Cavan players of all time - remember him shoving Paidi O'Se around under the Cusack stand when he ran on? Class ;D) to have done a bit more than just accept defeat like we appeared to do in the end.

Do you know what the worst thing of all was though? The Cavan support. Yes, our famed supporters. ac39 says on the other thread that it's a myth since the late 90s and I agree. Not only do we not travel in numbers any more but when we do, and 1997 was the last mass gathering, we sit there mute and don't try to rouse the team when things are going wrong. It was almost like we were content with what we'd achieved and it transmitted to the players as well. I've been at other matches where things have been going against us and the crowd, well, you'd think they were dead only to wash them as the philosopher Babs Keating would say. That said, any time the  support does muster behind the team they tend to let us down a bit with the dreadful performance against Mayo a few years ago a case in point.

I guess back in August, young tyros like Jason, Larry, Peter, Dermot probably thought they'd be back in Croker before too long for another bite. Lesson is to take your chance when it's there or else you might live to regret it. How spectacularly we failed to build on that singular success, eh?

The only thing I remember about the 97 semi was the Cavan wan and the husband coming in at half time in the wedding garb after getting a helicopter ride from The Sliabh Russell.

Cavan did not fully perform that day and coulda been a contender. The fact that they won the Ulster on vapour was exposed in the years since.

Love to see Cavan battle for Ulsters again. Just keep them out of feckin Casement Park.

Watched the 97 semi on the hill with the missus (to be at the time). She's cavan to the bone (although during my absence on Sunday the young fella who's only 4 convinced her to bring him to the Longford/Clare game so we are making slight progress).
Anyway one of my abiding memories from the game was the hill for the couple of minutes after Russells goal. I remember (fairly bravely) saying to herself on the way home that I never thought I'd see the day that I'd be in the middle of 10 ones from Cavan let alone 10,000 and for not one of them to have something to say!!!! Jesus the silence!!!

Other Abiding memories from 97:

1. Cavan warming up. Running between the Hogan and Cusack and getting a standing ovation on both sides of the park.
2. Damien O'Reilly getting stuck into Paudi O'Shea when Paudi came on to the field to give some advice to one of his players.

Watched the 97 semi in the old Hogan.  Cavans corner back had a mare and lost the ball coming out many time leading to many scores.  They obviously werent up for it, until they got a glimpse of winning and by then it was too late.  For Cavan 97 see Westmeath in 2004.  partied out after winning their provincial.  They ultimately lacked ambition and Mc hugh knew it and got out.  Possibly could have achieved more had they took the 95 Ulster only Tyrone stopped them that day.    That 97 was the worst Kerry team  to win an All Ireland from then to current day.  They preceded to play Mayo in the original puke football match, and their victory will always be tainted by the allegations made vehemently in some circles afterwards that it was another handy all ireland for the cute hoors.

Realredhandfan as everbody knows Kerry did not beat Mayo in the 1997 All-Ireland Final, Mauricew Fitzgerald did. The rest of the Kerry team was as poor as Mayo.

There was supposedly arguments in the Cavan Camp that day,in Croker aswell,Between McHugh and Donal Donoghue etc.
Didnt McHugh take a seat for most of the game?
rrhf Tyrone took a fair and suprising beating in the Ulster Semi Final that year didnt they?

97 was not a great one for the purists but we beat the Ulster and Connacht champions along the way and we were the best of a bad lot that year. The fact we only played Tipp and Clare in Munster probably reflects on a poor championship. Kerry were raw at the time with the bulk of the team just out of underage teams and it was 2000 before they reached their full potential.
After the debacle of Meath in 2001 the team was rebuilt and we have just missed one final since then.

But we will take 97 it was a turning point for us in the transition from the Glory days of the 70's and 80's, and I'd still rather win an AI in a crap year than lose in a good one.

Tyrone scored a superb early goal from centre back Noel Donnelly (manager of Omagh CBS) and Derry never looked back.  The infamous Brolly kissing scenes etc.  Tyrone were still suffering from a hangover form the Meath defeat the year before and did not show the bouncebackability that Mayo have shown consistently since after truly earth shattering defeats.

Jasus, you'd never know, but if we hang around on God's good earth for long enough, Cavan people may even live to be faced with the same Hobson's choice some day, who knows?

Careful of the Rossie boys.....theyll be well aware theyre not the best of footballers and will attempt to kick ye off the park. Theyve been trying that trick with Galway and Mayo for years!!!

Team is named:

Miller;
Cahill, Forde, Hannon;
Gunner, Chesty, Fannin;
McCabe, Brennan;
Cullivan, McKeever, Flanagan;
Jayo, Gallagher, Jelly.

Not risking Lyng which I can only think is due to worries over the Croker surface injuring him again, or else hanging on to bring him in as an impact sub later on.

Brilliant to see Johnston back if he's any way fit and in form a big pitch like Croker will suit him down to the ground, no pun intended.

Midfield and half back line still a major concern, even if half forward and half back line looks interchangeable you'd like to see Forde out there where he's done better in recent games when moved out, and the loss of Sean Brady as a midfield option is a miss as well. Walsh would have been handy to have around to keep tabs on Seamus O'Neill if he's playing, a rough enough client who will bully aggressively if he's let away with it. I expect Cullivan to be helping out in here as his main duty.

Lyng, Larry and maybe a few other decent enough lads on the bench you'd hope, it's probably the best team we have at the moment with Gaynor off the radar, Mulvey suspended etc.

The forwards are very small. Would there be any of them even 5 10" . Shouldn't b a problem if they get the right type of ball played into them.  Good to see Fannin further out aswell he will give good ball to the forwards.

Someone told me the Tg4 decided not to show the Division 2 semi-final games on Saturday night??? I kind of assumed it was common enough knowledge and not a secret but now I dunno if it's true or not (the GAA website still shows them as being on 'live') That said, the guy I heard from is usually spot on with this sort of stuff...
