Title: Buying a car
Post by: JimStynes on October 14, 2012, 06:48:53 PM
Havent a clue about cars or how to go about buying one.

On the lookout for one, my megane has started to play up so I am looking to get rid of it ASAP. Was thinking of a Audi a4 or a3. The other half saw a nice bmw 1 series. Is it best to buy off the Audi garage if I am looking to trade my car in?

Doesnt appear to be a diesel car out there that (at 50k+ miles) hasnt been designed to fail at regular enough intervals requiring expensive parts plus labour to fix

Clutches, flywheels, egr's, inlet manifolds, particulate filters ... all common parts which give bother never mind the individual suspension/brake/electrical gremlins

For 3/4 year old diesel motors now...I wouldnt have a clue what car is standing up better than the others

Start looking at them a week before the end of the month...show up and show a bit of interest and leave...........with four days to go before months end show up again and peak their interest.........................with two days to months end show up and offer a low low price  and then leave again.......on the last day of the month you will have yourself a new car provided you were not unrealistic. Thats the way I buy my vehicles and it works!

A mechanic told me the other day that he would rather have a petrol car now as the diesel men have fucked the whole thing up with bad diesel and it's wrecking half the cars in the country. He said petrol takes a little bit more looking after but there is less that can go with them.

My mechanic is of the same opinion IF you dont do big miles

Bad diesel is one side of it but another massive factor is the bolt on design changes to meeting euro 4/5 emissions target.

Honda are now appearing in used car surveys as more reliable than Toyota and my mechanic would back this opinion up - get yourself a 5yr old or newer Civic / Accord petrol if you're not doing 20k+ miles a year and you'll not go far wrong.

Where did you buy your Megane?  Would you go back?

Who services your car?  If it is not a main dealer, what does your mechanic recommend?  Could they help you source a car?

Is there an independent car dealer (one who sells and services all brands of cars) near you?  I would imagine with the soft market out there there would be good deals out there.

As people have said here, Japanese cars (Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Mazda) seem to run forever.

Sorry to steer this topic in a different direction but it isn't worth a new thread.  I have to change the address on my driving licence from a NI address to a London one.  The DVLNI website says it can only change it if the new address is a NI one.  The DVA in Swansea is the next option but the back of my paper licence says a new address has to be a NI address also.  Do I send it to Swansea or Coleraine with my new address?  Has anyone done this before?  Tried ringing Coleraine but all I got was a machine.

IMO all french cars are of a poor standard. Citroen, Renault and Peugeot. I would stay clear of them all.

I agree with what is being said here in that the Jap stuff is very good followed by anything out of the VW stable including Seat and skoda.

What about ford diesels GJL?

The 1.8, 2.0 and the 2.2?

The focus and mondeo are well reviewed but wondering how they hold up to the miles?

IMO a common rail diesel engine by Ford will come back to expensively haunt you based on bitter experience with an old Focus I had and a Galaxy the brother in law is dealing with at the minute.

Thanks, GJL. I'd always had an idea of Citroen as superior engineering and hadn't lumped them with the other French ones.

I already talked her out of the Renault Megane - the yoke with the big arse on it - women seem to go for that thing in a big way. Ruining another style dream is gonna make me really popular.

Short term unpopularity < regular trips to the garage. Worked hard to convince mine to go for a Skoda over a Renault, can't get her out of the fecking thing now.

Agreed, common rail was a step forward in emissions but a serious step backwards in term of engineering. A well built, direct injector diesel engine is a simple enough piece of kit IMO.

Anyone here drive a Qashqai? If so what are they like?
Thinking of getting either a Qashqai+2 or a Ford Kuga.
Need something I can let the seats down in so I can use for work but then able put a child seat in when not using it for work.

Father in law has one from new, has been a nightmare. its three years old now and has about 20,000kms on it. back to garage three times, they replaced the engine and he still is having problems.

Loads of ones in work have the Qashqai +2 and no reports of bother. I think the Kuga may come in 2WD or 4WD whereas I think the Qashqai is only 2WD. Qashqai looks bigger to me as the wife's friend has the Kuga which looks like a jacked up Focus. Whether it is or not is another matter.

Thats interesting as every single review I have read has been positive especially about the reliability.
I wonder was he just unlucky? Back in 2000 my auld lad and brother both bought brand new Astras, only difference was the colour. The brother had endless problems with his,the auld lad never had an ounce of trouble with his.

4WD would not be something I'd need. I think the Qashqai+2 looks better than the Kuga and comes with loads of tech as standard.

Have a look online for reviews, but I'd be looking at something other than the Nissan. A friend of mine is a service manager at a Nissan dealership and he has nothing good to say about them. He drives a Ford. Once the vehicle is out of warranty they don't want to know.
You could also look north for the extra years warranty.

Well is that not the point of a warranty?!  They all get the arm in.

Qashqai came 6th out of 100 in Auto-Express reliability survey. Would say that is more than decent.

It came 12th in the JD Power survey, which is surprising, though interestingly Nissan only comes 10th on the manufacturers list.

Anyone any views on Kia Sportage Platinum or Hyundai Santa Fe Highlander?

I know nothing except they look the part and have all the beels and whistles, are they any good? The Kia Sportage seems quite popular out here in Oz
