Title: Donegal jerseys
Post by: Paddy Wan Kenobi on July 18, 2011, 03:28:50 PM
I'm beginning to sound like I'm obsessed with jerseys but didn't Donegal used to wear green shirts with gold hoops like Kerry. What was the reason for the change in 92?

In the 1992 AISF v Mayo there was a colour clash.  Donegal changed to yellow and Mayo to Red.

After they won they decided it was lucky and kept to the yellow with green trim for the final and have done so since.

Sligo did something similiar after they beat Kildare in Croke Park in the qualiiifiers.

They had changed to their second strip (all black) because of the colour clash and then decided to stick with it.
In fact I think they may even have been fined for doing so.
Apparantly you can't change your 'colours' mid season.

We wore the green with gold hoops until the 92 semi final. Due to the clash with Mayo, we changed to what were basically Ulster jerseys and shorts with green instead of black. I guess people liked it so we stayed with it. We used the green/gold hoop as a change strip until we went with Azzurri. What Azzurri does is simply use the normal goalkeeper's strip as the change strip. Was an all green shirt, but now its a white jersey in the same style as the outfield one. Of course, on days like yesterday, the keeper uses a black shirt.

So after 1992, and apart from yesterday, what did Donegal win in the lucky new shirts?

Prior to using the Kerry like jerseys they wore some thing similar to what they wear now, not so sure why they changed but Micheal O'Hehir commented that "here comes Donegal and they look like Kerrymen" prior to Donegal playing Galway in the 83 All Ireland Semi Final, that was the year they went to the hooped jersey before going back to non hooped jersey in 92.

There have been murmurings from time to time about us going back to green/gold hoop, but haven't amounted to anything yet.

Donegal used to wear an all yellow shirt.

In 1982, the U21 manager Tom Conaghan introduced green with a gold hoop in homage to Kerry. They won the All-Ireland and introduced them at senior level too.

Changed to a yellow shirt for the Mayo match in 92 and have stuck with it since. I still have the old 'Magee Tailored' 1992 jersey in my wardrobe at home.

I'm not sure where the 82/83 story comes from. As far as I remember, Donegal always wore the Kerry lookalike jersey (or at least for decades before the 80s) before changing in '92.

did Leitrim wear the same? I seem to remember they did.

Yeah Leitrim got rid of the gold hoop sometime in the late 80s and early 90s.

Donegal did have green with a gold hoop as their change jersey when they first moved to Azzurri, though the last one was a reverse of the gold jersey.

As far as I know the gold jerseys and green shorts were first worn against Kerry in a challenge match in 1963, I'm not sure when they reverted back to green with a gold hoop. In 1992 they also wore the Ulster colours against Fermanagh

yes Leitrim wore the "kerry" style shirt for many years in the 80's but were back to green with gold trim when they won the Connught title.

Donegal always wore yellow/gold with green trim untill the early 80's when they went "kerry" style. They kept this for about 10 years and then they played Mayo in All-Ireland semi. The Yellow jersey was popular and of course commercialism had raised its head / traditionalists in Donegal also liked the revert back and so the All-Ireland final v Dublin was played in the gold with green trim and it has been that was since.

Again, the black jerseys of Sligo sold in the shed load so O'Neills and county board decided to keep it on that basis. It's all about the money!

May be mistaken, but I seem  also to remember Fermanagh playing in green and red as opposed to their Limerick type current jersey.

Roscommon, I think used to wear a Tipperary style jersey also.

Fermanagh - yes. Roscommon - don't think so.

I'm sure Donegal wore the green with gold hoop in the sixties/seventies.

Fermanagh did indeed wear a green shirt with red trim (with red shorts) from about 1977 to 1985.  They wore this in the 1982 Ulster final

Roscommon wore Tipperary style jerseys in an All Ireland Semi Final against Armagh in either 1977 or1980.  There was some action from this game shown when the Dermot Earley died last year.  Apart from that, I am sure that Roscommon always their present colours as you will see from any photos of the great All Ireland winning teams of the 1940's.

Roscommon did wear blue with a gold hoop but when they reached the 1943 All-Ireland final against Cavan but due to the colour clash they had to change, Central Council presenting them with what would become known as the primrose and blue, which was retained after that win, with the old-style jerseys retained as their alternatives

Did they not used to have a red hoop in there too for a while?  Did they also wear red with green trimmings around the late 80's?
