Title: Tablets
Post by: lurganblue on July 16, 2011, 08:51:57 PM
No not drugs but the electronic ones. Was in carphone warehouse earlier and was looking at a few of the tablets. With so many different ones available it's hard to know what to go for. Samsung, iPad, motorolla, hp, etc what's the major differences and what is the best quality for money.

I'm really only gonna use it at home mostly and I have wifi. In saying that I could see me using it a lot. Is there a need for 3G and do they have to be bought on some sort of tariff?

I apologise if there is already a thread on this and I will delete.

I went to buy the archos 101 tablet from tesco last week for £150. I thought it would be perfect to try these out at a low enough cost. The fecking things were sold out though. Anyone know any other stores that stock them for a similar price?

I think it depends on the OS. If they are android and have access to the android market then those ones should all have the same apps to choose from. iPad has the app store the same as
iPhone, iPod touch etc

I bought myself an iPad last week - it is some bit of gear.

Great for browsing whilst lazing about; its miles handier than a laptop in terms os just picking it up.  The apps also make it worthwhile.
It's also great to be able to download the daily / Sunday newspaper early of a morning withot having to leave the house.

Didn't really consider any other tablet, but I'm well happy with my choice.

Only downside is that I have to share it with my 4 year old son and his Angry Birds.

Got a cheap one on ebay a few months ago. It's got an android 2.3.4 OS,10 " capacative screen. Great for surfing the web. Access to the android market. Obviously the Ipad is better but if u're just looking for something to have on the coffee table for quik surfing one of these will do the trick.

Depends what you are in to.

I have:
Met Office
Living Earth
TuneIn Radio
TV Guide
XE
ESPN Goals
Times / Sunday Times
TV Catchup
Speed test
BBC News
Angry Birds

People also talk about things like Star Walk and there is an app that shows the airplanes in the air at any time.  So if you see a plane overhead you can look at the app and see where it is going to / from.
As you can guess most apps don't perform life changing functions, they either provide entertainment or satisfy curiosities (although the Met Office one is very good as at a glance you can see the weather forecast for the next few days).

Apart from the apps it is really useful to be able to shortcut a webpage and have that appear like an app.
So for example I have http://www.sportinglife.com/football/live/latestscores/ created as a shortcut on the home screen.  This means that literally within 5 seconds of switching the iPad on I can look at the latest football scores.

There's also an app called livescore which has all the big leagues from all around the world. Much better than sportinglife's scoring update page.

I have an Asus Transformer and it's a fine piece of kit. What makes it worth considering is the docking station - allegedly an add-on, but it's really the unique selling point of the product. It comes with a battery which gives you several hours extra juice, the keyboard is a reassuring shield for the screen and, well, it's a proper keyboard. I'm typing this on it now, couldn't see myself doing that on an onscreen keyboard.

Tablets are a luxury item. If you don't have a laptop, get a laptop. The extra functionality in terms of games, word processing, spreadsheets and printing make them indispensable. But if you have a few (!) quid to spare and like gadgets then a tablet is great. You'll find yourself switching it on to Google all manner of guff, something you wouldn't have done before due to the interminable boot-up times of PCs, and the way little children react to them is worth a significant portion of the price in itself!

Right a quick question, and probably a stupid one.

I am going on holiday next week, and was going to buy a kindle. However the guys at work state that I should spend an extra few quid and buy a google nexus 6.

Essentially it's for reading, so how does this measure up in sunlight? I don't mind paying a few quid extra (160ish) to get a yoke that plays videos etc as well, because it'll get use.

Any thoughts?

If it's for mainly reading the Kindle is the way to go; especially you want to be able to read it in the sunshine. I have a tablet and Kindle; I use the Kindle solely for reading books as it doesn't strain the eyes.

Got myself one of the very last $99 HP Touchpads at Christmas. Wonderful piece of kit for browsing/travelling. WebOS was/is a great little operating system and it had alot of potential on the Touchpad had it survived. I've got Android dual-booting on it too so it has plenty of life left.

couple of options.

Apple website itself. Ipad2 16gb wifi  £259 with a 12 month warranty.  Refurbished but like new with warranty. Over the last few weeks they have been popping up regularly, just a case of keep checking.

or the new ipad mini due to be released in the next couple of weeks. 7" and price point expected at around $299 (£200).  Loads of pictures floating about. some partner companies have cases etc already ready. Probably be the no. 1 on the present wishlist for christmas.

Google Nexus 7 will run the Skype app. Almost all review I have read put the Nexus ahead of the Kindle Fire. I think the Fire is tied into an Amazon app store which is behind the Apple app store and Google Play.

Was looking for a Cheap tablet for her in doors to use for browsing the web. Was orginally looking at the Samsung Tablet, but came across this on Ebay

Not really that into my Tech so was wondering if anyone could advise if this is any use? Seems cheap compared to other 10' models. Dont need it to do anything too fancy, just browsing and maybe viewing TV programs and movies.

The guy is based in derry so would actually go up so would be fit to check if it's a fake. He's getting really good feedback on his previous sales. been chatting him on email and he says it's the same spec as a Samsung galaxy only that it doesn't have a rear facing camera. He says it's quicker than the galaxy as it runs an overlay called whizz (Haven't a fecking clue what he's on about!!) and can run native android (Whatever that is???)
He gives a years warranty as well.

It sounds like he has made it to his own spec, but it probably hasn't gone through the rigorous testing. However, from a personal stance, I don't think I could part with the amount of cash he is asking for, especially as I could probably find a branded samsung android for a little extra. I can't fault the tablet, it's just the reliability of the product I would have a problem with.

I bought a similar Android tablet last year on Ebay. It worked fine for a few months. Then it started crashing for seemingly no reason. Had to let the battery go dead before it would allow me reboot. I still have it and use it occasionally but in hindsight would have been better off spending a couple of hundred extra on an IPad or a Samsung Galaxy.

If you are considering the Nexus 7" you might want to think about the Kindle Fire also. Both working out about £100 cheaper than the 7" iPAD.
I think I read somewhere that Google and Amazon are selling them as loss leaders to try to make the money on App's (Amazon) or to get you browsing (Google).

Its not his own spec - its a ztpad c93

Sketchy enough detail on specs - wouldnt go for it myself.

I have the nexus 7 - decent job, but for those who want a bigger screen (less portable which is why i went 7") the nexus 10 is released today and has great specs for the price.

You won't get it for a while it seems, google have sold out.

I am looking into buying a new tablet, I want to stay as far away from Apple as possible, not a hater just don't like Apple. Has anyone used the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and what do they think of it? I think it would come in handy for uni next year.

I've been trying to play videos (.MOV) on a Fujitsu Stylistic M532 Tablet which runs Android 4.0 (ice cream sandwich apparently).

It tells me that I need to install flash, but i can't find flashplayer for Android.

Any ideas?

Flash isnt supported on Android anymore. Adobe have quit working on mobile apps.

You just need to have a video player application on the iPad that can play those video formats, e.g. AVPlayerHD.
You can purchase it from Apple Store for a few cents or download it from a friendly source.

Do I need a plug in of some sort?

Likely due to no native Flash support on Android. There are some work-arounds, though:

Was looking for a Cheap tablet for her in doors to use for browsing the web. Was orginally looking at the Samsung Tablet, but came across this on Ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/C93-ZT-280-1GB-DDR3-8GB-Wi-Fi-10-2in-Android-4-1-capacitive-Samsung-Chipset-/290810428549?pt=UK_iPad_Tablets_eReaders&hash=item43b5a6fc85

Not really that into my Tech so was wondering if anyone could advise if this is any use? Seems cheap compared to other 10' models. Dont need it to do anything too fancy, just browsing and maybe viewing TV programs and movies.

Went ahead and bought this for the other half. And have to say so far so good. Does everything we've tried to get it to do and seems very responsive. I would like to compare to against the galaxy which was twice the price, to see if there is any difference. Course we'll have to see if it continues. But definitely build quality seems to be good, especially for something that cost £159.00

Seems they need flash player but the device doesn't support it I got one when they first came out and have had a love hate relationship with it . There are some apps like Scrabble and indeed Adobe Flash which can be obtained in the US but not here . I also got majorly pissed off a few weeks ago when they uploaded a new feature which put predictive text on permanently . It was a siege to remove it.  Got the wife an IPad 4 for Christmas but she's hardly used it as she prefers the laptop.  That will probably change when the football season starts as she's Club PRO and should find the IPad more convenient for compiling and sending match reports

Hi, got the Nexus 7 at christmas.  It froze last night, i held the button for around 45 secs and it came back on again i put on charge and went back an hour later and it was as dead as Hector.  I tried holding the power button and volume button to reboot but nothing, i also connected to my laptop, it came back with software driver
installation unsuccessful.  Anyone any idea what has happened here?  Bringing it back to the shop today so don't want to be fobbed off.

Mine's the same. Thinking about rooting the OS because my vanilla Android Nexus 4 is solid as a rock on the same router. I think it's the way the Samsung-tailored Android OS deals with weak connections.

Bringing it back to the Carphone Warehouse here today. There's 2 Samsung phones on the house as well and they have no problem picking up the wifi and keeping the connection.

Just realised that Apple are no longer supporting the IPad that i have and it will no longer receive updates.  Would i be best to try and jailbreak it now? If so, any tips on how to do that? The tablet works perfectly well and i would have had no intention of upgrading it.

What iPad have you got?

4th generation
Why try and fix a working iPad and by breaking it? What positive outcome do you expect to happen from that action?
You'll be able to use this iPad for years to come, it has 4G WiFi and IOS 10.
It's the ipad's 4 hardware that's the problem, not Apple's absent support in it's latest ios release.
IOS 11 is designed to run on the latest iPads, those newer ipads have much more memory, processor speed, graphics ability and the operating system  adjusts to make better use of that hardware for applications and general usage.

I'd an iPad 2 that suffered a similar fate.

What you'll find is that over the course of the next year or two, any apps you use become unsupported, and then officially no longer available for that version of iOS.

Once YouTube stopped allowing videos to be played on it, it wasn't much more useful than having the front and back cover of a book, but no pages inside.

Yeah I have a third generation IPad, bought it in 2012, and is no longer supported by updates. It's on its last legs, so slow.

Why would jailbreaking it be breaking it? My interest is to see would that action allow me to still download currently unsupported apps? or is the tablet now just a dead duck?

Anyone aware of any good sales on iPads now in January? Would be using it to watch things online mainly so wouldn't need much storage for photos, videos or apps.

If that's all you really need it for, you don't need an iPad for it at all. Much cheaper options out there.

What like gallsman? Something as quick as an iPad?

No, it'll not match an iPad's processor but the Fire HD 10 is a great tablet for the price.

You said all you wanted it for was streaming, so it would be absolutely fine. If you subsequently then try to overwork it, of course you might run into problems
