Yes, it does seem a bit precious and over the top on the part of the Lieutenant Colonel, but the unquestioning chain of command is an important part of military discipline. I don't think either party or the Army are going to come out of this looking good (of course all that is said without seeing what the rest of the story in regard to the other charges are!)
