Title: Should/Will Roy Hodgson quit while hes ahead?
Post by: Denn Forever on April 30, 2010, 01:14:51 PM
Well done to Roy.  Even when 1 nil at halftime you'd always expect a few goals from Fulham in the second half.

The reason why I ask this is it can't get any better especially when you see what happened at Liverpool.  2nd last year and big talk of winning it this year but always seemed to be playing catch up.

What odds of a swap of Roy for Rafa?  Rumours of Rafa for Juventus don't seem to go away.

He has loads of experience,I wouldn't be disappointed if he came to Liverpool,I would certainly prefer him to say Martin O'Neill

+1. I just can't buy Martin O'Neill for some reason. I think we only have a thing for him because he's Irish.

Apart from being a Derryman absolutely nothing, however AZ and RLL have said for a long time they would not want him at Liverpool and have been consistent on that point.  I would think he would be ideal for Liverpool with his excellent track record at every club he has ever managed.  Personally don't think he will go anyway as it is effectively a sideways step currently.

Everyone touts O'Neill for United but I think he is made for the Liverpool job. It's a top 4 club, great and understanding supporters, some good players and probably a healthy budget to build the team he likes. In all his clubs he has been hindered in this department and his eye of r a rough diamond has essentially gotten him players that can do the required job to a certain level.

With the bargaining power of a big club like Liverpool I would imagine he could attract the type of players capable of producing it on the Champsions League stage and more essentially a team that can challenge for the Premier League.

I like O'Neill and hope he does get the success he deserves at some stage!

Absolutely nothing,I hold no grudge towards him and think he is a decent manager.

But I'm not sure he would be cut out for one of the "big" clubs,I say that with no disrespect to Aston Villa, but at Anfield despite it being 2 decades since they have won the league the fans still expect Liverpool to be challenging for the title every year,Villa are happy with a Top 5 or 6 finish.

I personally don't think his time at Celtic should be used as a benchmark of how good O'Neill is,I reckon I could get Celtic to finish in the Top 2 in Scotland, also I don't like the way he is so jumpy all the time on the sideline,It seems to me he doesn't handle stress to well.

IMHO Hodgson would have far more experience and better able handle the expectations that a job like Liverpool would have, yes sure Liverpool have been well below the Top teams this season but I don't think anyone will argue that they are still a top club with expectations higher than the likes of Villa.

Saying that it would be great having a Irish man managing Liverpool, and If he did get the job I would obviously wish him well and hope he was a success.

No they're not.  Do you really think Villa were content with 6th last season after having an 8 point cushion over Arsenal at one stage?  And will they be happy to finish 6th this season when they are touching distance from 4th (although unlikely to get there)?  Just because their historical average (since 1992 when Sky tell us football was invented) is 5th or 6th, it doesn't mean they are happy with it.  Just like Liverpool are not happy with not winning the league, Villa will now not deem a season successful unless they finish top 4 or win a cup.
No denying the expectations would be higher at Anfield, but it doesn't mean he has none to deal with at Villa.
And please no more of this 'big' club talk.  What defines big?  Rafa Benitez called Everton a small club once (or something to that effect).  Smaller yes, but not small.  In many peoples opinions Liverpool are currently a lot closer to Everton/Villa/Spurs than to Man Utd for instance.  It's more of this Sky rubbish where everything must be put in a box and branded.  Big 4 my arse.

Hodgson has managed Inter Milan on possibly 2 different occasions.

O'Neill's teams play a terrible brand of football, actually might suit Liverpool alright come to think of it.

MON's brings defense to a side first, then imparts a route one aggressive style of play. After this he tries to bring in the more creative players to get them to play soccer (a la clough).
At Celtic he did this, but alwys had to keep a lot of the bigger more physical players and not fully move to the pure ground level passing game because of the physicallity of the spl and as the pitches there are not great. Plus that rangers are allowed kick lumps out of Cletic most games in most years, so a small skillful side are not much use as they are outmuscled and bullied into submission - a fact gordon strachan now knows !

Liverpool (or Celtic or most clubs) would benefit with either Hodgson, MON or Mourinho.

His time at Celtic is only one of O'Neill's benchmarks. And no, you would not have gotten Celtic to finish second when O'Neill took over at Celtic. In 2000, many experts claimed that O'Neill would even struggle to finish second, that Advocat was a tactical genius, that Rangers man for man were light years ahead, that ONeill had bought a dud in Sutton to replace Viduka. etc etc.

Liverpool looks to be a football equivalent of an asylum, massive debt, poor enough squad, erratic management, unstable ownership, unrealistic expectations, in other words it would be a downward step for O'Neill.

I've respected Hodgson for a long time and he was my first choice to manage Ireland  (ahead of Trap) when he was finished with Finland. I wouldn't go overboard with what he has achieved at Fulham with getting to a Europa final. If he wins it then fair enough. Same way the media overhyped MON, they are overhyping Hodgson. In his management CV, his outstanding feats (especially in Sweden) are also dotted with average jobs.
But Hodgson has a good record with working with an inherited squad and doing well, also has demonstrated craft in European games.
The task for Liverpool fans will be adjusting their expectations to a new reality.
