CORK minor football boss Brian Cuthbert takes his side into championship action for the first time tonight when they face Clare in the Munster MFC quarter-final in Cusack Park at 6.30pm after experiencing mixed news on the injury front.
Attacking duo Daniel Fitzgerald (hamstring) and Kevin Hallissey (shoulder) are both ruled out of the equation, but Castlehaven's Damien Cahalane has recovered to start at midfield. Cahalane has been dogged with finger and leg injuries recently which threatened his participation but they have responded well to treatment is available.
Cork's side is anchored in defence by Sean O'Shea and Matthew O'Shea, both who starred for Béara CS in their recent All-Ireland Vocational triumph, with Cahalane an imposing figure in midfield. In attack the talents of Brian Hurley, John O'Rourke and Alan Cronin, who all featured last year, will be tipped to lead the way in the scoring stakes.
Clare reached the semi-final stage last year and manager Michael Considine is able to call on four of that side for tonight's match. Full-back Graham Johnson, wing-back Wesley De Loughrey, wing-forward Seanie Malone and corner-forward Darragh Sexton will spearhead their efforts to succeed.
In Austin Stack Park there, is a repeat of last year's Munster MFC decider at 7.30pm with the meeting of Kerry and Tipperary. Six of the HS Clonmel team that won the All-Ireland Colleges Senior B football title last Friday have been named in the Tipp lineup by manager David Power.
Captain Paddy Dalton and full-back Jonathan Ryan are their defensive stars with Billy Hewitt and Liam Boland, who contributed 1-9 between them in last Friday's decider, the sharpshooters up front.
It's only a fortnight since a Tipperary football team travelled to Tralee to upset the home side and Kerry minor boss Pat O'Driscoll is determined his charges will not suffer the same fate as their U21 counterparts. Tonight represents the start of O'Driscoll's inter-county managerial career, but he comes armed with impressive credentials, courtesy of the stunning club success he enjoyed with Ardfert.
"Tipperary have always had good footballers but the appointment of John Evans has really brought them on. They don't fear Kerry and showed that at U21 level.
"They won't worry about having to travel to Tralee. They have some fine players, including the lads that won the All-Ireland with Clonmel.
"We've worked hard but we know what we're up against. I'm loving this new job. I get as much enjoyment out of U8 and U10 football as I do inter-county. There's good old spirit in this team and they've worked hard, which has made it very enjoyable. Minors are very unpredictable but hopefully we can get the right result now."
Kerry will be minus their St Brendan's, Killarney contingent, but if last year's stars Eanna O'Connor, David Culhane, Mark Reen and James Walsh click, then they can advance.
The final quarter-final tonight sees Limerick and Waterford square off in Kilmallock at 6.30pm.
The home side will look to Shane O'Connor, James O'Meara, Ian Corbett and Jamie Lee for inspiration against a Waterford team backboned by Kevin Phelan, Danny O'Brien, Sam Lawless and Eoin Walsh.

Good to see Clare going well, hopefully they can keep it up they need a boost at the moment.
Kerry 1.12,Tipp 2.7 full time score.
Tipperary scored 2 late goals in Tralee, but it was still a decent performance away from home against Kerry. We should have a reasonable chance of qualifying for the semi final against Cork, when we meet the winners of the game between Clare and Waterford. On tonight's results that will probably be Clare.

Limerick cruise into next round
Limerick 3-10 Waterford 2-04
LIMERICK BUILT on a great start to cruise into the next round in Kilmallock last night. A goal inside two minutes by Danny Frewen had Limerick on their way and when Brian Noonan had a second goal after 10 minutes it put the home side in front by 2-3 to 0-0.
Limerick went on to lead 2-6 to 1-2 at the interval, with full forward Eoin Walsh getting the Waterford goal.
Limerick kept up the pressure on the resumption and a goal by Pat O'Donnell killed off the game.
Such was the Limerick dominance that corner back Shane Reynolds was able to move forward to score a point.
Waterford introduced Cormac Condon for Éanna Ó Ceallaigh late on and Condon got their second goal but it made no real difference.

Perfect start puts Kerry clear
Kerry 1-12 Tipperary 2-07
TWO LATE Tipperary goals put a gloss on the score as a Kerry side under new boss Pat O'Driscoll deservedly advanced at Austin Stack Park last night.
Kerry did the damage in opening eight minutes with an explosive scoring burst of 1-4 without reply.
Mark Reen opened Kerry's account with a superb point in the second minute and Thomas Hickey added another within a minute. Tipperary were chasing shadows as Hickey raced through the middle in the fourth minute and he fed Gavin O'Grady, who quickly transferred the ball to the inrushing Mark Reen, who blasted the ball to Tipperary net.
Two Billy Hewitt points and a Liam Boland free was all Tipp had to show as Kerry led 1-6 to 0-3 at the interval.
Kerry took over again in the third quarter with a string of points from Eanna O'Connor, Gavin O'Grady and Hickey as they looked to be cruising as they led 1-11 to 0-4 at the end of the third quarter.
Tipperary never gave up as Kerry ran their bench and two late goals from Boland and Shane Leahy cut the deficit to two points.
Time, however, was not on Tipperary's side.

Battling Cork show their mettle
Clare 0-09 Cork 1-09
THERE WAS drama aplenty last evening at Cusack Park when Cork left it late to secure victory.
The sides were level at the break, 1-2 to 0-5, with Cork corner-forward Brian Hurley rattling the Clare net after 13 minutes to claim the tie's only goal.
But early in the second-half Cork were dealt a major blow when full-back Seán O'Shea was dismissed by referee Keith O'Brien for a second bookable offence.
At first, Clare took the initiative but they could never get more than two points ahead.
Tenaciously, Cork rallied and Daniel McEoin made it 1-6 to 0-9. Going into injury-time, the Leesiders dug deep and their corner-forwards Hurley, twice, and McEoin added late vital scores to seal the visitors' victory.

Hartnett's tour-de-force helps Cork pip Tipperary
Cork 2-31 Tipperary 4-22 (After extra-time)
BRIAN HARTNETT inspired Cork to a hard-earned victory over Tipperary in the Munster Minor Hurling Quarter-Final at Páirc Uí Chaoimh last evening,
The dynamic corner-forward scored all his side's six points in the second-half of extra-time.
The teams were level 12 times during a high-scoring encounter.
Tipperary full-forward Aidan McCormack claimed a hat-trick of goals as the counties finished 2-21 to 3-18 after the hour. A fourth goal from Cathal Horan helped Tipperary to a 4-20 to 2-25 interval advantage after the first period of extra-time time before Hartnett cut loose on the resumption.

Limerick made to work hard for their passage
Limerick 2-13 Kerry 1-13
LIMERICK GOT a fright before edging out a gallant Kerry at Kilmallock last night.
Limerick led 1-3 to 0-0 after 10 minutes with Michael Ryan getting the goal. Four John Fitzgibbon frees helped them ease into a 1-8 to 0-5 interval lead.
A second Limerick goal 40 seconds into the second half looked to have put the home side in cruise control.
But a goal by Pádraig Boyle two minutes later lifted Kerry's hopes and with Shane Dunne scoring six points, five frees, and Brendan Brosnan contributing four (three frees and a 65) it meant that Limerick had to battle for survival after Kerry upped their game considerably after the interval.
LIMERICK: E Webb; A Dempsey, M O'Loughlin, B Hannigan; T Ryan, D Hannon, K O'Donnell; C O'Riordan, M O'Connell; D Morrissey (1-0), W Hickey, J Mulcahy (0-1); S Dowling (0-2), J Fitzgibbon (0-4, frees), Michael Ryan (1-5). Heffernan's super strike sets Waterford up nicely
Waterford 1-21 Clare 0-16
THE DEFENDING champions, Waterford qualified for the Munster semi-final with a comfortable win over a disappointing Clare side in Walsh Park last night.
Following a smart point by the excellent Jake Dillon, Waterford were boosted in the 11th minute when full forward Cormac Heffernan latched on to Pauric Mahony's low ball form and first-timed it to the back of the Clare net.
Waterford took their foot off the pedal in the second half, but early points from corner forwards Dillon and the excellent Stephen Roche banished any hopes of a Clare comeback.
Waterford will play the winners of the round-robin play-offs. Clare, on the other hand are back in action this Saturday against Kerry.
WATERFORD: D Duggan; J Barron, S O'Keeffe, L Egan; M O'Neill, D Fives, E Madigan (0-1); P Prendergast (0-3), G O'Brien; C Curran, E Murphy (0-3), P Mahony (0-7, frees); S Roche (0-4), C Heffernan (1-0) J Dillon (0-3). Subs: S Ryan for M O'Neill, C Chester for C Heffernan.

Cork 2-31 Tipperary 4-22 After Extra Time
By Fintan O'Toole
Thursday, April 29, 2010
AFTER the stunning heights they scaled last year in Páirc Uí Chaoimh, it seemed too much to hope for more memorable action when the Cork and Tipperary minor hurlers convened at the same venue for last night's ESB Munster MHC quarter-final. Instead they surpassed last June's fare to conjure up as spellbinding a game imaginable, packed with top-class individual displays, brilliant score-taking and a fitting finale as extra-time was required to produce a winner. The tie ebbed and flowed for 80 odd minutes but ultimately it took the critical intervention of Cork corner-forward Brian Hartnett who, having impressed throughout, really excelled in the second half of extra-time as he transformed a 2-25 to 4-20 deficit in the 70th minute into a 2-31 to 4-22 advantage in the 80th minute, by weighing in with six points.
Hartnett wound up with a dazzling 1-14 return to show for his night's work and while his polished point-taking from play and frees was key, it was the beautiful diving flick to the net in the 49th minute that was his standout moment. Cork had other heroes on the night. Conor Lehane terrorised the Tipperary half-back line by popping over six points from play, Stephen Moore used his physical presence to good effect in attack while midfielder Darren Sweetnam controlled matters in his sector for long stages. It was a tough defeat for Tipperary to absorb considering the magnitude of their performance. Liam McGrath produced a flawless display of marksmanship in converting 10 placed balls while Aidan McCormack's predatory instincts were reflected in his three-goal tally. Full-back Andrew Ryan was in immense form, Niall O'Meara worked diligently at centre-forward and Michael O'Brien illustrated what a loss he was to the team from the start through injury, by grabbing four points when sprung from the bench. They had cause to complain as well at the decision not to be awarded a penalty in the 59th minute when McCormack looked to be clearly pushed near goal.
Cork made the hard yards early on with Sweetnam and Lehane pushing them into a 0-5 to 0-2 advantage by the 11th minute. But Cork's dominance counted for little when a rapid Tipperary burst yielded a neat goal by McCormack in the 14th minute and a stylish point by O'Meara two minutes later. Despite trailing by a point, Cork never seemed unnerved and thanks to the consistent high standards of shooting that Lehane and Hartnett were employing, they ploughed back in the lead. They were 0-9 to 1-3 ahead by the 24th minute, and although Cathal Horan looked a dangerous operator for Tipperary close to goal, it was still Cork in the ascendancy with an 0-11 to 1-6 advantage at the interval.
The action was cranked up a few notches at the break as the scores started to tot up with greater frequency. Jamie Coughlan hammered home a penalty to give Cork a huge boost in the 32nd minute, but between them Liam McGrath and Aidan McCormack wiped out that lead with a 1-2 blast to draw level by the 35th minute. The teams stuck close to each other for a time as they traded points but despite McGrath's relentless accuracy from frees, Cork were looking stronger and crafted a magnificent goal in the 49th minute. Shane O'Keeffe bustled through before offloading to Coughlan, who arrowed in a cross that Hartnett dived to flick to the net at the back post. That sent Cork 2-16 to 2-12 in front but Tipperary's response was impressive with McCormack expertly drilling in his third goal in the 52nd minute and O'Brien emerging as an attacking threat. When McGrath tapped over a 62nd minute free they looked on the cusp of victory but sub Jamie Wall did brilliantly to engineer the space to grab a last-gasp point for Cork to send the match to extra-time. Prospects of a replay could not be dispelled as the match remained tight in extra-time, with Wall and Lehane striking early points for Cork before O'Meara and O'Brien pegged them back for Tipperary. Matters seemed to turn crucially in their direction when Horan buried a shot to the net after Gary Minihane spilled the ball in the 69th minute, but Hartnett's scoring spree proved most decisive.
Scorers for Cork: B Hartnett 1-14 (0-7f), C Lehane 0-6, J Coughlan 1-0 (1-0 pen), S Moore 0-3, D Sweetnam, J Wall, S O'Keeffe 0-2 each, N Kelly, M Howard 0-1 each.

Surprising result in the Munster Minor Hurling Quarter Final tonight, with Clare beating Tipperary by 0-17 to 1-13. Clare now play Limerick in the semi final and Cork play Waterford in the other semi final. Could be a Clare/Waterford final. Hopefully, the Tipp minor footballers will get a better result in the semi final against Cork next week.

Tipperary team to play Cork on Wednesday night has been picked. Same team as beat Clare in the last round, with a few positional switches from midfield up. Tipp beat Cork in the semi final last year. Is it too much to hope for a repeat on Wednesday. Fingers crossed anyway.

Final score in Thurles - Cork 2-12; Tipperary 2-9. Cork were 11 points in front before Tipp scored a goal on the stroke of half time, to leave a half time score of 2-7 to 1-2. Tipp were certainly the better team in the second half and outscored Cork by 1-7 to 0-5, but we had left ourselves with too much to do. Tipp missed at least 5 kickable frees and if we had a reliable free taker, I think we would have won the game as most of these missed frees were in the first half and we should have been within 2 or 3 points at half time. A decent display by Tipp against a Cork team who physically stronger and played with more pace to their game, but IMO Tipp were the better footballers and a decent number should move up to Under 21 and maybe Senior in time.
Limerick 0-07 Kerry 2-15
KERRY TROUNCED Limerick in the Munster minor football championship semi-final at Newcastle West last night. Gavin O'Grady finished with 1-6 to his credit, five of the points being frees.
The game was 25 seconds old when O'Grady scored Kerry's first point. Danny Frewen leveled before O'Grady scored again.
It was level again after 12 minutes when midfielder Padraig Scanlon pointed a Limerick free.
Kerry then took over. O'Grady scored his third point and others followed from Eanna O'Connor, Garry O'Leary, Thomas Hickey (2), and O'Connor. Shaune Keane's goal on half-time left Kerry 1-8 to 0-2 ahead at the break.
Kerry picked up where they left off in the second period, with O'Grady putting over two frees. O'Connor then added two from play before O'Grady scored a second goal for Kerry.

Rebels forced into major battle
Tipperary 2-09 Cork 2-12
By Diarmuid O'Flynn
AS EXPECTED, Cork qualified for a July 4 Munster final meeting with old rivals Kerry after this semi-final win over Tipperary in Semple Stadium last night, but they were made to earn it.At half-time, leading by eight points (2-7 to 1-2), it appeared as though a rampant Cork were home and hosed, but a tremendous second-half performance by Tipp saw that lead closed to a very nervy two points on a couple of occasions with just minutes to go.
However, a couple of late points, the first by wing-forward Kevin Hallisey, the second – and final score – by substitute Dan McEoin, was enough to see Cork home against a Tipp team that had been reduced to 14 in the dying minutes, after corner-back Paddy Dalton got a second yellow card.
Cork were the better side overall, no question, but on this evidence they will need to improve if they're to capture that Munster title.
On a perfect evening for football, Cork dominated the first quarter and led by four points courtesy of towering midfielder Damien Cahalane, full-forward Brian Hurley and wings Kevin Hallisey and Alan Cronin, before Tipperary finally got on the board, a pointed free by Billy Hewitt in the 13th minute.
Thereafter, however, it was Cork again on top, and the next 14 minutes was when they did most of their scoring damage. Two goals and a point they managed in that period, Tipp held scoreless, and both majors were from the top drawer, the result of superb teamwork.
The first came in the 14th minute, a fast free by outstanding wing-back Jamie Wall setting things in motion, the ball passing through the hands of wing-forwards Cronin and Hallisey, to the supporting Mark Sugrue, who drilled home a pile-driver.
The second was equally impressive, and again both Cronin and Hallisey were involved, setting up corner-forward Shane Duggan for another superb team goal.
Ominously for Cork, however, Tipp too were creating goal-scoring opportunities of their own, two good chances scorned by their inside forwards before Billy Hewitt finally delivered just before the break, leaving those eight points between the teams.
Even seven minutes into the second half there was still no sign of any Tipperary comeback, Cork having extended their lead by a point, 2-9 to 1-3, courtesy of points from Brian Hurley and midfielder John O'Rourke (Cork had eight different scores on the night, six forwards and both midfielders, a fair spread).
With dangerman Liam McGrath now on the edge of the square, however, and with their outside men finally beginning to speed up their play, Tipp finally came to life.
A point from corner-forward Liam Boland began the fightback, then a goal from dual star McGrath, on the end of an increasing number of lightning Tipperary team moves – Padraig O'Meara with a quick free, taken on by Paddy Dalton (another dual star) with yet another defender, centre-back Michael O'Sullivan, giving the scoring pass.
With the tempo now increased, Tipp attacking in waves, all Cork could do was to hold them out and gradually the pressure began to tell, three frees conceded in scoreable positions (three for Hewitt, one for Boland), along with a fine long-range point from midfielder Donagh Leahy, leaving Cork reeling.
Two points from Hallisey in the closing minutes, however, steadied the ship, and it was sub McEoin with the final say.
An entertaining game, lots of good football from two fine sides, but as noted above, it will take something extra for Cork to stop Kerry.
Scorers for Cork: M Sugrue 1-2; S Duggan 1-1; K Hallisey 0-3; B Hurley 0-2 (2f); D Cahalane, J O'Rourke, A Cronin, D McEoin, 0-1 each.

IT MAY not have quite measured up to their classic drawn game at Páirc Uí Chaoimh, but Waterford and Cork still served up another compelling hour's hurling in an action-packed Munster minor hurling championship semi-final replay before 4,000 at Walsh Park last niight.
Victory, richly deserved, in the end to defending champions Waterford, who will now meet their first-round conquerors Clare in Sunday's Semple Stadium decider.
But all credit to a Cork side that was totally outplayed in the opening half, trailed by an intimidating 12 points within a minute of the restart, and looked to be staring a comprehensive defeat in the face.
However the young rebels worked their way back into contention, and a flurry of scores both from play and frees saw them narrow their deficit to a single goal with 10 minutes still remaining.
The home side was beginning to look increasingly rattled. But when their need was greatest, they magnificently rose to the occasion, and finally killed off Cork's brave comeback with some of the finest scores of the game in the closing minutes.
Waterford laid the foundations for their victory in an opening half of near total mastery for them, outplaying Cork in virtually every sector, and building up an intimidating if not unassailable 2-10 to 0-5 interval lead.
Ironically it was Cork who jumped into a first-minute lead when Brian Hartnett, who had a fine game at corner forward, had the first of his eight points from a free. But they would go another 18 minutes without scoring, and in between a rampaging Waterford found the range with unerring accuracy from varying distances and angles.
Their half forward trio of Paraic Mahony, Eamonn Murphy, and Jake Dillon had the opposing Cork half-back line in a spin and it was no major surprise when two of three, Dara O'Carroll and Kevin Buckley, were substituted inside 21 minutes. Before hour's end the three Waterford attackers would score 1-12 between them – a just reward for their outstanding play throughout.
The home side, playing hurling of vintage quality, built up a 2-7 to 0-2 lead by the 20th minute. The goals came in the 10th and 17th minutes – the first gifted to them by a goalkeeping blunder as William McCarthy allowed Eoin Madigan's prodigious free from deep inside his own half to deflect off his hurley and over the line.
Nothing fortuitous however about their second seven minutes later, with Jake Dillon brilliantly finishing off a three man-move that also involved Eamonn Murphy and Cormac Heffernan.
Cork at that stage were reeling under the intensity of Waterford's play, and the half-time break, when it came, saw them trailing by 2-10 to 0-5 with a mountain to be climbed.
Things got even worse when Mahony stretched the Waterford advantage with another point inside 40 seconds of the restart, but when Hartnett replied with a Cork point two minutes later, also from a placed ball, a heroic Cork fightback was about to get under way.
Conor Lehane knifed his way through the home defence to crash a great ball to the net in the 36th minute, and when midfielder Darren Sweetnam struck over a long-range beauty Cork had become aside transformed.
The brilliant and unerring Hartnett found the range with four points in as many minutes, and when Lehane added yet another super one from play, it was 2-12 to 1-12, and most definitely game on.
Now it was Waterford who were being asked the most searching questions and they responded as only a good side can.
Their defenders came forth with tigerish qualities to snuff out the Cork attack just as emphatically as they had in the opening half with Daragh Fives and Jamie Barron particularly impressive.
A flurry of points flowed, two of them from substitute Colm Curran and Martin O'Neill worthy of winning any game. For Waterford the perfect finale to a memorable evening.

Another Clare boost as 21-year wait ends
Waterford 1-11 Clare 1-16
By Jackie Cahill, Semple Stadium
A POWERFUL second-half display saw Clare claim a first ESB Munster minor hurling championship crown since 1989 at Semple Stadium yesterday. Davy Fitzgerald and Jamesie O'Connor were minors when Clare last ruled the province at this grade, but a 21-year wait for glory was ended in magnificent style. It should be noted, however, that Waterford were playing for the second time in just five days after beating Cork in a semi-final replay last Wednesday night. Déise boss Jimmy Meaney felt this was a factor in his team's display but he also generously admitted that Clare fully deserved their success.
For Clare, this landmark success offers further proof of a real upsurge in the Banner County's fortunes in the underage ranks, coming as it does after last year's All-Ireland U21 win. Appearing in this first provincial minor final since 1999, Clare grabbed their chance with both hands to claim just their third Munster crown at this grade. In the process, Waterford were denied back-to-back Munster minor crowns for the first time in the county's history and must now regroup through the back door in the hunt for All-Ireland glory.
When the sides met at Walsh Park in April, Waterford ran out 1-21 to 0-16 winners, but Clare had certainly learned the lessons from that defeat and were well prepared for yesterday's rematch. Conditions were ideal in Thurles, with barely a hint of a breeze, but the first-half was relatively low scoring as the half-time whistle blew with the teams level at 0-6 apiece. They were level four times in that opening half as Waterford clawed back a 0-4 to 0-6 deficit with two Paudie Mahoney frees to restore parity at the midway point.
Eight minutes into the second-half, Clare struck a decisive blow when David O'Halloran netted a brilliant goal and from there until the finish they led. Paudge Collins and the impressive Daire Keane were involved in the build up before O'Halloran dIspatched a fine finish at the Killinan End. It was 1-8 to 0-9 clear now, and Clare followed up with scores from O'Halloran and free-taker Niall Arthur to lead by four, the biggest advantage of any team until that point. Back came a dogged Waterford as Eamonn Murphy netted a brilliant solo goal in the 45th minute after running past a number of would-be challengers. Last year's champions were now back to within a point but Clare then stepped on the gas and six unanswered points in a seven-minute spell made the game safe.
Clare joint-manager Donal Maloney admitted that this was a huge victory for his team, coming as it did less than 24 hours after the senior team suffered a 13-point mauling against Dublin at Croke Park. Maloney said: "The conveyor belt is starting to move - that's the key thing. We had some barren years there with little or nothing at underage. We have to be patient but maybe in three or four years we'll have a really strong senior team." Maloney added: "It's been quite a year for us. The fact that it's our second term really stood to us because we took a lot of learning out of last year. Everything that went wrong for us last year, we tried to put it right. You can't do anything without brilliant players and we have exceptional players."
Waterford manager Meaney reflected: "We felt good coming into it but time is what's required to recover from games and maybe we didn't have enough time. I'm not going to use it as an excuse - Clare played very well and took their scores. "I didn't feel that Wednesday's game was going to impact on us as much. But some of our performances did seem quite flat. It was a tough ask to play on Wednesday and then be ready again for today. We just seemed a little bit flat as the game wore on."
Scorers for Clare: D O'Halloran 1-3 (0-1f), N Arthur 0-6 (5f, 1 65), D Keane 0-3, T Kelly 0-2, S O'Halloran & J Shanahan 0-1 each.
