Title: Best Goal Ever Scored
Post by: corcaioch on June 21, 2009, 10:26:25 PM
What is the best intercounty goal you've seen?

I'd have to go for John Fenton's against Limerick in 1987:

Good goal alright but where was the wexford backline? He ran forty or fifty yards and no wexford man within 10 ft of him??

Olcan McFetridge's (Antrim) goal against Offaly in 1989 semi-final was sensational when he seemed to jump, catch, turn and strike the sliotar all in one motion. He got an All star that year too.

yesJimmy  Barry doubled  on  a  John  Fenton  shot  against Galway  early  80s    Tommy  Coen  in  goal  for  Galway i  think
as good  as  Fentons  maybe  but  Fenton  had  a lot  to  do  with  this one  too

Think it was Michael Rice against Dublin in the Walsh Cup this year- sheer genius. Long ball played into Eddie brennan in the right corner -pulled on it first time over to the far side on the left hand side of the pitch in the air perfectly weighted to Rice who controlled it first time on the hurl and straight off the hurl from 25 yards buried it into the top corner. Never seen anything like it- don't think I ever will again.

Of the ones I have seen it would have to be John Fenton's ripper against Limerick. And we got to see it over and over because it eliminated Liver Fluke, Lungworm and Scour

Tony Doran got a few goals which helped to eliminated Liver Fluke, Lungworm and Scour etc

Tony Doran probably frightened the scour out of a good few, man and beast.

JBM's goal was against Galway in the 1983 semi-final. It was covered on Breaking Ball a few years back. John Fenton hit a ground shot in towards the square at around chest height and JBM doubled on it with his back to goal. Hit the back of the net like a rocket. The best bit is that his instant thought as the ball came towards him: "f*** ya, Fenton!" :D

The best goal I ever saw in the flesh was John Mullane's second in the 2003 Munster final. Paul Flynn was lining up a free about 30m out and the Cork defence were (naturally) backing off, leaving Mullane casually loitering around 20m out. Flynn batted the ball to Mullane who caught the ball, did a pirouette and smashed the ball right into the top far corner. Poetry in motion.

Hmm. If memory and grainy B&W footage serves me correct, Tony Doran's philosophy seemed to be to catch the ball then fall towards goal and handpass / throw the ball in. You wouldn't get away with that now

But the teeth man, the teeth. Also, he's not that long gone that only B&W would be around. And he had a bit more to his game than that.

Best goal I ever saw was scored by Kilkenny this year in the Walsh Cup in Parnell Park. Not sure who scored it (Ritchie Hogan maybe) but it involved a 1st time half volley on the sideline by Eddie Brennan straight into the hand of a sprinting colleague ( without altering pace) who buried it. The whole of Parnell Park applauded it.

1991 (I think) under-21 all-Ireland final replay, Galway vs Kilkenny in Tullamore. Canice Brennan scored with the greatest strike of a ball I've ever seen. About 40 yards out, drilled into the top corner. I've still never seen anything like it.

Eoin Kelly (Tipp) against Cork last year was one of the best I've ever seen too. When he had his back to goal, didn't even look, but still got in a quite amazing strike.

You mean goals like this one(against KK in '76)?

Doran was a fine player - a real handful at full forward.
