Anyways, some things have already gone true to form; Freo lost their pre-season comp game v. Richmond in the last minute...now where have I read/written that before ( >:( >:( >:(); The Eagles got thumped big time by Collingwood :D :D :D; and Collingwood managed to create history today by overturning the tribunal for the first time in history. That club is the effing pits. Shite supporters, shite bullyboy board members, thugs all over the pitch and still the most hated club in the land.

The tribunal fiasco is now sharply in focus as today Daniel Mortlock from Port Adelaide walloped a Swans player and it will be interesting to see if the book is thrown at him. Also, Freo's Michael Johnson can rightly and justifiably feel pissed off at the decision to change the decision considering he got 4 weeks for a much less serious challenge in a game last year.
Damnit only one week into to season 2009 and already the pies are causing a storm. Over to you Barry Hall, Eagles, Cousins...
An update on the pre-season (with my as usual Fearonesque unbiased pro Fremantle slant).
Collingwood beat Essendon and Geelong beat Carlton in the semi-finals of the NAB cup. Carlton might be worth a look this year. The final is next week and will make interesting viewing.
Fremantle managed to break with tradition and do the impossible this week...they actually came from behind in the last quarter to beat the enemy/snobs/drugcheats. Of course not without whingeing and gurning from the Eagles management.
I got a text with about five minutes left from a certain board member at the game who was there to fulfil his lifelong ambition of seeing Daniel (Honestly Horse Tranquilizer is a brilliant Cocaine substitute) Kerr in the flesh. It went along the lines of the Norwegian commentator deriding Thatcher and the English after Norway defeated England in a soccer game many moons ago, only this time, said board member was gloating about the Eagles being 19 points up. Fast forward 25 minutes and that humble pie he was choking on was ooooooh so sweet. Ha ha (in a Bart Simpson-like voice). Oh I do hope he learns.

I was at the Eagles and Shockers game at the weekend and as Aerlik has already pointed out got to see one of my favourite players Daniel Kerr in action. I have been down to see the eagles training a few times, these boys are f**king massive. TV definately doesnt do them justice, Darren Glass is a machine. Anyway the game itself was exciting and close right up until the end. Some heavy tackles going in for a friendly game. Fair play to Freo coming back at the end, big Aaron Sandilands (7foot 1 ruckman) dominated the last quarter to pull Freo back from 20 points down to win by 5. West Coast have a lot of players still to come into the team though so i would expect West Coast to beat the shockers in the regular season.
Great win for Collingwood with Marty Clarke having a good game. Really hope the pies do well this year, even though everyone in Australia hates them. The final next week should be a great game with Geelong and Collingwood bringing out their big guns for the match. Cant wait for the start of the 2009 season.

GEELONG has taken a giant step away from the disappointment of September's grand final loss and sent an ominous warning to the rest of the competition, thrashing Collingwood by 76 points to claim the NAB Cup at Docklands on Friday night.
The Cats last won the pre-season premiership in 2006 and looked certain to claim this one from midway through the second quarter.
Scores were locked at the first change but six unanswered goals generated a 40-point lead at the main break and laid the foundations for the 0.18.19 (127) to 1.6.6 (51) victory.
Joel Selwood, who with Gary Ablett wreaked havoc through the midfield, won the Michael Tuck Medal as the best player on the ground.
So dominant were the Cats in what was expected to be a close contest, that the Pies took almost a half of football to kick their third goal of the game. It came at the 13-minute mark of the third quarter.
So imposing were they in almost every match-up around the ground that acting captain Cameron Ling was substituted from the game in the third quarter.
But the news wasn't all good for Geelong, with premiership defender Josh Hunt taken from the ground on a stretcher in the first quarter with what is suspected to be an ACL injury to his left knee.
He hit the ground after an innocuous clash with Collingwood forward Paul Medhurst.
Selwood was stellar, collecting 19 touches to half time to finish with 33 and two goals. Ablett was less visible but no less effective, especially in the last term, and had 35 disposals and three goals.
Paul Chapman (29 possessions, two goals) was also very good while young forwards Tom Hawkins and Ryan Gamble were lively but wasted opportunities.
Harry Taylor clearly won his battle with Travis Cloke and Matthew Scarlett, Corey Enright and Darren Milburn were watertight as usual.
The free-kick count heavily favoured the Cats (27-10) but despite the moans of Pies fans, it accurately reflected the winners' desire to be first, strongest and smartest at the contest.
For the Magpies, Shannon Cox stood out with 17 generally good disposals, Scott Pendlebury (14) and Dane Swan (16) worked hard in the midfield, Thomas showed flashes of form forward, while Tarkyn Lockyer was reliable as a backman.
The Cats got off to a great start when Tom Lonergan booted their first after a free kick was awarded right in front, but the Magpies then kicked three of the next four to take back the lead.
One of those was a 50m penalty won by ruckman Chris Bryan for a nine-point conversion, but Selwood was able to reply.
The Cats then turned it on in the second, adding 6.5 to 0.1. Steve Johnson kicked the first before Chapman took a Selwood handball to goal on the run. Varcoe then kicked his first and Selwood nailed another.
Johnson marked unmanned 30m out and converted and then Ablett sent home a super-goal that was disallowed because of an infringement in the square. He booted a regulation goal moments later to make up for it.
The Cats had several more opportunities on the way to their 40-point half-time lead, but didn't capitalise on them.
The third term started in similar fashion, with the Cats booting a couple before the teams traded majors. Fifty-six points clear, the Cats turned for home.
In the last, Ablett kicked an incredible goal from 40m on the boundary only for the Pies to find a double through Thomas and Cloke.
Geelong then booted the last four, including Jimmy Bartel's celebrated say after the final siren.
The focus of both sides will now switch to round one of the season proper, with Geelong to meet Hawthorn in two weeks' time and Collingwood hosting Adelaide.

I'm a bit late on getting back with my observations of Round 1 which started last weekend. Probably due in no small part to the thumping Freo got from the Bulldogs at Subi on Sunday. Well at least Freo didn't break with tradition and actually win a season opener.
On a happier note the following happened. The Eagles threw away a 45 point lead to lose to the Lions; Collingwood managed to lose to a young Adelaide side (which could be an outside bet for a top 8 finish) when winning was easier, Essendon lost to Port Adelaide. Collingwood left it up to their president to whinge this week thus cementing the rest of the nation's hatred both for him and for the club. Hawthorn minus that boring p***k Shane Crawford lost to Geelong and it looks like the Cats will be hard pushed to lose this year...and it's only round one.
The Ben cousins debacle continued with his debut for the Tigers v. Carlton. Haha, they got turniped, well and truly and the drug cheat pulled a hammy. Obviously not having the substances to mask the pain/injury will limit his appearances this year.
The board's very own Jim Stynes made his second-team debut on Saturday with two quarters as bench warmer and two as waterboy. There's talk his being seen in an Eagles jersey around Perth has got him noticed by the snobs and he has, apparently, been approached to take on the role of club mascot. Having said that, he and I might make go to the game on Sunday where mini-me and I will be in full-voice for Port Adelaide. G'wan Tredrea.

Dont get Aerlik started on Ben Cousins, hes a jealous freo supporter so him and ben dont see eye to eye.
Hanley got 2 games at the end of last year but hasnt been selected yet this season. He will probably get a run later in the year when Brisbane get a few injuries. I hear brendan murphy is doing rightly although he has picked up an injury which will keep him out for a good while. I havnt heard anything about Tuohy at all.
Some good games at the weekend. Sydney had the sursprise result of the round beating the Hawks easily enough. The eagles also had a great win over Port with my man Daniel Kerr having a stormer.
Great to see Michael Quinn getting a game so soon, he made a few mistakes but overall he had a great game. It says a bit about aussie rules that a fella from Ireland can play for a few months then play at an elite level! I couldnt see an aussie coming over to Ireland and then a few months later starting on one of the top counties first 15. I keep reminding as many aussies as i can that Gaelic is a much more skillful game :)

Away tay blazes, JS, jealous me arse. Cousins' (spit spit) da was a great South Fremantle player and had the Royalty come into existence at the same time as the snobs Cousins would have gone for them. Not that I think it's sad he didn't. Once a drug cheat, always a drug cheat.
Ballyhaise, he was/is (who knows ;)) a regular abuser of methamphetamines which greatly enhance the body's ability to mask pain/fatigue, so the hoor could run for hours. Cousins gets alot of press for being a great player. He is nowhere near the player Judd is nor Jim Stynes' football fantasy Daniel kerr either. I make the latter comment in all seriousness too. ::) He is/was too concerned about his pretty boy looks to ever go in for a contested ball and always hung off the pack and picked up the loose ball, usually from Judd or Kerr who were in there getting the crap beat out of them.
Anyways, I'm not speaking to anyone about Freo at the moment. Playing shiter than the anticipated shite.
On a more positive note, Jim Stynes' training regime stepped up a peg at the weekend when he did a few one-to-one drills with mini-me (who's 7) and just scraped through. Reducing a child to tears however, is pretty Ben Cousins-like and cheating will never get you far.
Well, round three games are complete and needless to say, Freo are propping up the table ably assisted by Melbourne and Richmond. Freo would break your bloody heart. 6 shots on goal in the first 10 minutes and they manage two goals and two behinds. They don't score a goal in the second quarter, manage to outscore Adelaide in the third and then come from 12 down to go 6 up within 10 minutes of the start of the last quarter. And then go back to sleep. Feckit.
the snobs managed to just avoid a 100-point slaughtering by St.Kilda (so there's something to smile about).
St.Kilda continue to do well, but that will end at the weekend...ahem...they're playing Freo in Melbourne. Ever the optimist am I.

Ah feckit, on a more important note, Jim Stynes progress in the seconds continues unabated. He has been offered a free ticket to the Eagles' game on Sunday in an attempt to take on the role of waterboy for Mt Lawley piranhas. At the time of writing he was still considering this promotion. His manager reports that he has decided to stop sleeping in his eagles top and he apparently tumble-dried his shorts to give him more of a 1980s-budgie smuggler look for the fans a la Warwick Cappa.
The Eagles are eagerly awaiting his progress as Daniel Kerr needs a rest. Apparently.

Crap weekend especially as the snobs beat the Bulldogs and our very own Jim Stynes was there and is still grinning. Actually, kudos to that man. Played his first official full AFL game at the weekend and got Man of the match. Excellent effort. Unfortunately I wasn't there to record the momentous occasion but I heard from one of his teammates that he did a damned good job. Maith thu laddy.

Freo turned the Swans over in Perth, congrats Aerlik. Cracker of an Anzac day match at the MCG between the Pies and Essendon. Geelong gave Brisbane an almighty hiding, hard to see anyone touching them this year

Aye Stephenite, it was a great game to be at. Finally the duck is broken. They led from the start and even though they were outscored in the final quarter (back to tradition) they had done enough to get away. Some big games from big names. Pavlich, Sandilands, Tarrant (brilliant on Goodes), Grover and Hasleby but for me the man of the match was Roger Haydn. Lightning speed and plenty in the tank. On the downside, Rhys Palmer sustained a bad knee injury late in the game to rule him out for quite a while. Adam Goodes just has to be seen to be believed. He is a cracker of a player. Mickey O'Loughlin and Barry Hall were missed but I'm not complaining.
I listened to the Pies-bombers game on the wireless in the kyaaar, and was glad the cramps were beat. Panic setting in already. Hee hee.
Whiskeysteve, Michael Quinn is a 19 y.o. from Longford. Bit of a tank in our game but pretty average over here. He had a wonderful first game for Essendon Bombers, sadly against Freo. For him to do what he has done is some stuff.
Fremantle came from behind to beat the snobs on Saturday...therefore, nothing else matters for the next few days...Mexican flu? Never heard of it.
And our very own Jim Stynes marked another stellar performance for his WAAFL team scoring a very, very noteworthy 5-5, 5-3 of which was scored in the first quarter. The rest of the game was spent taking calls from West Coast Eagles management and signing autographs for his ever-increasing legions of fans.
Fremantle won their third on the trot against a very highly fancied Carlton on Saturday on what turned out to be a weekend of suprise results all around. It started with an excellent Bombers win over Hawthorn on Friday night; some stirling performances from a young Essendon team that look like they are going to be around for a while.
The Dockers took the game to Carlton and led throughout with big (understatement) Aaron Sandilands beating the whole Carlton midfield by himself.
North Melbourne and Port Adelaide was apparently a great game to watch...I didn't. North won by 5 in the end.
Western Bulldogs gave Adelaide a lesson, and it goes to show the value of one player. Adam Cooney the Brownlow medalist made his return from injury and subsequently tore shreds from the Adelaide midfield.
Geelong pasted Sydney without the injured Gary Ablett. Gulp...
The snobs just beat Melbourne by 7 points.
Brisbane were just too experienced for Richmond. If you get to see this game, watch out for the two players going for the ground ball and the subsequent collision. Ouch.
And the second best result of the round was last night when St.Kilda walloped the Whingers Collingwood by 88 points.
Fremantle play Hawthorn on Friday night and mini-me and I will be joined at the game by the board's AFL recruit-in-waiting Jim Stynes and his wummin.
On the subject of our Jim Stynes, he was mysteriously rested last Saturday. His super-idol Daniel Kerr got injured (apparently - I blame the lack of illegal substances in his body which have covered up the years of injuries he has suffered) and so I'm waiting to hear if he is to be selected for the Eagles for their game at the weekend. You heard it hear first.

Cancer-stricken Stynes to step back from AFL role

Former Dublin Gaelic footballer and current Melbourne Demons President Jim Stynes has revealed he has cancer.
The 43-year-old told a press conference this morning in Melbourne that he will be taking a break from his role at the Aussie Rules club, due to "health reasons".
Stynes revealed to the assembled media how he found out that he had cancer.
"Three weeks ago I found out that I had a lump in my back. It was just random and guys told me that I should take it out and have a look at it," he said.
"I found out that it was cancerous and so I was sent in to do a whole load of follow-up tests and scans and so on.
"I found out that I thought it might be just located in that one area - but it's not.
"It's spread quite a bit and I have a journey to go on let's say."
While he will remain at the helm of the Melbourne Football Club, his responsibilities will be lessened and his duties will be delegated to other board members in the interim, as he bids to return to full health.
Stynes was supported at the press conference by his wife Sam, club vice-president Don McClardy, CEO Cameron Schwab, as well as various Melbourne players.
McClardy will take up Stynes' duties while he is undergoing a programme of recovery.
Former Melbourne president Joe Gutnick said that Stynes plays an integral role at the club.
"He is an integral part of the footy programme, especially in the most recent period of time," he said.
"He has got 'a way' with everybody and is able to unite everybody, so he is going to be sorely missed at the club."
Stynes began his AFL career as an 18-year-old rookie, recruited from Ballyboden St Enda's back in 1980, having had no previous knowledge of the game.
He went on to play 264 games with Melbourne, including a 244-game unbroken run and won the 1991 Brownlow Medal - the Aussie Rules' equivalent of the Footballer of the Year award here in Ireland.
Stynes became President of the Melbourne Demons in 2008. Outside of the club he was named as Victorian of the Year in 2001 and 2003, for his work with his own charity, the Reach Foundation, a group committed to helping teenagers at risk of suicide or depression.

Very sad to hear that about Stynes, hope he makes a full recovery.
Just watched Collingwood v Essendon live, Collingwood won well and after a slow start opened a 5 goal lead in 2nd quarter. Collingwoods tenacious tackling was definitly the stand out. Didak a awesome footballer and super creative. I presume marty clarke is injured as I didnt see him. Top 4 finish likely for magpies now and wont be far away.
I get some hassle when i say im a collingwood fan, supported them since I took an interest in AFL a few yrs ago and wont change, main reason I picked them was there black and white same as Sligo obviously. Anyways watching the game live today several camera shots of the crowd disturbed me, the passion is one thing but the ferocity of some fans with what was clearly abuse of opposing team players looked bad, and it was both sets. Some lads on here go to games, whats it like? Is it just a minority in 77,699 crowd. I see Tom Cruise was there aswell.
Sligonian, I've never been to a game outside of Perth so can't comment about the situation in the other cities. However we Freo fans have a few t***ts we love to hate and give abuse to. Pride of place is the no.1 Drug cheat in Australian Sport, Ben Johnson (oops) Cousins. Not far behind was Fraser Gehrig of St.Kilda and basically any Eagles player, except Wirrpunda who is acknowledged as a star man. Collingwood players get abuse because of their We-are-Collingwood-so-we-are-special attitude and the fact that the fans think you need a passport to leave Melbourne, even for a Geelong game. I used to think Ackermanis was a tosser but seeing him play for the Bulldogs this season was a lesson in how to read the game. Matthew Lloyd of Essendon gets grief for pulling his togs up around his shorts around his nipples. Fevola also gets grief for being a big mo-fo.
Being so far from Melbourne means that most Freo and Eagles games are practically 100% home support, but I did see some boguns at the Freo v. Geelong game two weeks ago. Looks like they walked from Geelong, not washing for a week and never darkening a dentist's door in their life.
Jees some game Geelong v St Kilda 85-91....some game. Great entertainment yday.

Dropped. Quinn came in last weekend and scored a late goal for Essendon, and Begley was in the St.Kilda team I believe, too.

DOWN football could be set for a major boost with the news that Martin Clarke may be considering a permanent return to the Mourne county.
Clarke, currently playing with AFL club Collingwood, has had a mixed season for the Magpies and The Irish News understands that his drop in form and playing time, coupled with homesickness, has left him seriously considering his options.
It would also soften the blow of the imminent departure of rising Down star Jamie O'Reilly, who is poised to join the Richmond Tigers as their first ever Irish recruit. Conor Meredith had been on trial with the club before, but opted to join the Kangaroos instead.
"I've signed a document that says if I'm going to play AFL for anybody, it will be for Richmond. I haven't signed a contract with them yet, but there is one on the table," O'Reilly told The Irish News last week.
"The AFL's pre-season starts in the last week of October, so I've basically 10 weeks to sort things out. If I haven't made my mind up in that time, they will know that I have no intention of going over."
Twenty-one-year-old Clarke joined Collingwood in 2006 and enjoyed a fantastic first season after making his debut against the Sydney Swans in round 12, 2007. Last season he made 22 appearances as his star rose further.
But this year he has only made 12 appearances for the senior side and has been featuring for the second string in the Victorian Football League.
The An Riocht man is unlikely to make any decision on his future until the AFL season finishes on September 26, but if he did decide to return, it would be a major fillip to the county, and for whoever takes over the vacant managerial post.
Clarke's last visit home was at the end of July for his sister's wedding while he also returned home in October 2007 to help An Riocht to Down league success, notching 2-1 in their final victory over Kilcoo.
If he did decide to return to Down on a full-time basis, it could prove significant with regard to players making the switch to Australia.
Clarke was viewed as one of the greatest success stories in terms of players making the switch, but his return would be welcomed by those opposed to the recruitment of young Irish players.
Clarke did not feature in Collingwood's 97-56 victory over the Swans on Sunday, a result which lifted them to third in the table.
However, he was one of the stand-out players as the VFL side earned a finals' berth after a 76-point thumping over Frankston at Visy Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Dromintee man had played 13 VFL games last year and was touted for a senior call up before injury ruined his season.
Meanwhile, Donegal youngster Sean O'Kennedy will fly out to Australia on Friday for a trial with Collingwood. The Four Masters' clubman has been involved with the county minor squad for the last two years and will be hoping to secure a rookie contract.
Should he agree terms on a two-year international rookie contract following the one-week trial, he will be the first Donegal player to feature in the AFL.
He is unlikely to be the last Ulster man heading for trials though as controversial Australian Rules players' agent Ricky Nixon has arranged more sessions for GAA players.
The attendees, yet to be named, will attend a camp in the winter.

Just watched Collingwood v Essendon live, Collingwood won well and after a slow start opened a 5 goal lead in 2nd quarter. Collingwoods tenacious tackling was definitly the stand out. Didak a awesome footballer and super creative. I presume marty clarke is injured as I didnt see him. Top 4 finish likely for magpies now and wont be far away.
I get some hassle when i say im a collingwood fan, supported them since I took an interest in AFL a few yrs ago and wont change, main reason I picked them was there black and white same as Sligo obviously. Anyways watching the game live today several camera shots of the crowd disturbed me, the passion is one thing but the ferocity of some fans with what was clearly abuse of opposing team players looked bad, and it was both sets. Some lads on here go to games, whats it like? Is it just a minority in 77,699 crowd. I see Tom Cruise was there aswell.
Christ there is no more spitefull and awfull fans in sport outside of soccer than a Collingwood fan, not a sportsman or sportswoman bone in their body, their fans are plain nasty. Good choice SLIGONIAN

Nice generalisation there. In my time down under I went to a couple of Pies games with a mate of mine who was a lifelong collingwood fan and a nicer guy you couldn't meet. Himself and his buddies were decent sorts and whilst passionate during a game never had any issues with other teams fans etc. Hence I still look for their results from a distance

St Kilda beat Western Bulldogs today in the 1st Preliminary final by 7 points, 60-54 at the MCG in a very low scoring game, Nicky Riewoldt kicked 2 goals in the last 5/6 minutes to win to for the saints!!!
Looks like it could be the final everyone wants with the Saints and the Cats if they can beat Marty Clarke's Collingwood tomorrow.

I'm just glad Collywobbles are out...again. It would have been agony to have to listen to them.
Based on the performances at the weekend, it is hard to look beyond Geelong. They were awesome. However, like most people (note I said most as Collingwood hate everyone) I wouldn't begrudge St.Kilda a win. I wonder how Robert Harvey is feeling having played so many seasons and just retiring before a potential premiership year.

Well, Rocca is practically finished and Medhurst and Davis are too small, so Fev would be a good choice. Plus, only Collingwood could afford him over there.

Haven't heard any more about Colm Begley, but his chances of a place in the first team at St.Kilda will be under even more pressure due to the Saints picking up Peake from Freo( :'() and Lovett from Essendon, making that one helluva a great midfield area.
Fevola has gone to Brisbane Lions, and he'll be joining arguably the best forward in the comp, Jonathon Brown. All they have to do now is get the ball up there.

THE Brisbane Lions' bid for Brendan Fevola is on the brink of collapse.
The proposed deal with Carlton is in danger of being sabotaged by Michael Rischitelli's reluctance to join the Blues.
The two clubs hoped to exchange Fevola for Daniel Bradshaw and Rischitelli, but Rischitelli is believed determined to continue as a Brisbane player, despite heavy courting by Carlton officials in Melbourne yesterday.
A Brisbane official said last night: "The deal's off."
Barring a change of mind overnight by Rischitelli, Fevola's choices now seem confined to a late bid from Sydney Swans, or a return to Visy Park.
