The problem.

A dog I found tied in a bag garden when its owner skipped off.Seems very friendly one minute, sits when told and likes top get rubbed on the head, generally like a normal dog.

Then for little and sometimes no reason he will snap, snapped at my niece who went to rub him, he had jumped onto the sofa and cuddled up beside her, she went to pet the little hoor and snap.

He is a terrier mix about a year or 2 years old.

Question, do we put him down for safety of small kids or can he be taught not to be so aggressive?

I'm sure he can be taught, but maybe you dont have the time, expertise, or more importantly the luxury of the dog making a huge mistake when you have a 2 year old running around.

Give it up for rehoming -if its suitable they will find a home.

Children come first. You would never forgive yourself if the dog harmed the child. Get rid of it or put it down.

He is on a farmyard, not usually allowed in the house except when pops is in town, then my sister brings him in out of sympathy. I personally would not lift him or rub him, however i am not there and hear the stories. My father would kick him across the ditch if he made a snap at him but everyone else is nice to him and he knows he has a few scared already.
Would castration calm him any?

I'd try to discipline him first mannix, how does he respond if you give out to him or hit him a slap?

I'd a wee terrier for years, when he was a pup he snapped a few times and got a slap, he never done it again.
Dogs need taught right from wrong too but whether he'll accept you as boss is another thing.
Which one of you bitches wants to dance?

It obviously hasn't worked for Laois Lad!

Drive home stocious drunk some night and run over him. That way your conscience is clear.
I wanna have my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.

You need to bring the dog to a professional trainer. The dog believes he is the boss of the "pack", ie you, your niece etc. The dog needs to be trained to understand that he is actually on the lowest hierarchy and that all people are above him. The snapping is the pack leader telling an outsider to get away from his property and respect his authority. This dog can be dangerous to a person they are not familiar with, especially a child. You either need to put the dog down, keep away from children or have it trained.

Don't take a chance on the dog when there's children in the house. I would ask that you try to rehouse the dog, rather than have it put down. Not the dog's fault that it has that temperment, most likely mistreated. No WAS mistreated.

Give the dog to someone who has the time to love and train the dog as it should be.

Anyway, long story short... is a phrase whose origins are complicated and rambling.

Don't type whilst drunk please.

Pangurban

Could possibly be blind in one Eye, causing him to react sharply when approached suddenly on that side by a child

Don't think anyone has ever been killed by Drunken typing .

Hurler on the Bitch

I usually find that a bit of chloroform over the mouth and then hit it over the head with a hurl solves the problem. Then sell it to xxxxxxxx xxxxx xxx who specialise in 'dog food' in the North Antrim area. However, don't order the Special Fried Rice with Chicken in that area as that is made out of xxx'x xxxx with xxxxhole mixed in. Stick to fish and chips.
