I think, now that Galvin has his suspension halved for doing what he did that the Kerry management shouldn't pick him to start for the final. It would be a nice gesture in my opinion.

This is all very reactionary. Kerry seem happy enough to follow the GAA decision. I'd say there was more to it than a simple -interpret the rules how you see them.

Gaffer

If he did make the squad for the final, it would be unfair on he who would have to make way, which of course would lead to bad feeling in the camp and a debate within Kerry itself. No, just leave him to find a ticket like everyone else!!!
"Well ! Well ! Well !  If it ain't the Smoker !!!"

lynchbhoy

suspended players have always been eligible to train , so imo this is plain wrong wrong wrong
to stop him doing so.

I would have thought he deserved a longer suspension for what he did
but like all good GAA folks shoul ddo, we take the decision of the committee ruling on it.

if its 3 months, then 3 months it is.
no whinging.

'GAA President Nickey Brennan confirmed yesterday that Kerry did indeed seek clarification and revealed that they were told it was not Croke Park's place to guide them on such an issue'.

This saga has the makings of a good screenplay yet.

Which is dair enough. Croker have enough to do with out explaining the rule book to clubs and counties across the country.

Another example of GAA officialdom doing its best to embarass the GAA. And being so arrogant as to not notice.
(regardless of whether its right or wrong about the training)

Disagree totally with Zaptisita. This is the All Ireland champions, looking for some guidance on a high profile issue - just to ensure it doesnt get any more needless attention (which is exactly what has now happened because of the above arrogance and idiocy.)

You hardly expect some clerk in Croke Park to answer the phone and give this sort of advice. There would be little or no provision for such a request. This request could take a number of days to return to the Kerry camp.

Kerry obviously had a doubt around the legality of it. They took a chance and Croke park said 'you have broken the rules' Kerry said 'OK, it won't happen again' Croke Park said 'don't worry about it no one wsa hurt'. Ends.

FFS - some clerk  ::)

Its just pure embarrassing to have this type of shíte being aired in public. Could all have been dealt with in a proper manner. But feckitt, Nicky and the Croke Park lads do pompous so well they seem to revel in their opportunities.

Zapatista

Would some one have had to report this breach of the rules to Croke Park? Did they take it upon themselves to investigate?

QuoteI would take an educated guess and say that Galvin's (and anyone else's) suspension bars him from stepping foot on any GAA vested ground or taking part in sanctioned activities which would need to be covered by insurance.

Just a thought, as handball is under the GAA structure would he also be banned from playing until his ban is up or is it confined to "Field" sports?

Hound - you're right - this is an embarassment !

Main Street

But remember that Croke Park did not tell Kerry to interpret the rule themselves.

The cute hoors are just offering that as an excuse, that that was the meaning they took from a Croke Park official who told them that they have to look elsewhere for a rule interpretation.
Kerry just decided to look within on their own initiative and reasoned that it was okay for Galvin to train.

orangeman

I've been thinking about this suspension thing again - WHY did Kerry even bother to ask the question when they knew that suspended players always train with the team ?
Was someone going to run a story on it, to create further hassle / embarassment ?

Sounds like the GAA / journalists are fed up looking at Kerry and want new champions this year, preferably Dublin.

Right, lets examine this so. Firstly,  where is this "elsewhere" that they should look ?

secondly (from the Breheny article)

QuoteKerry sought clarification from Croke Park late last week on how Galvin's suspension impacted on training sessions and were informed it was their responsibility to interpret the rules on a general basis.

they were told it was their responsibility to interpret not their responsibily to get an interpretation from someplace or any such guff as you seem to be implying.

Finally, quoting Nicky Brennan

QuoteGAA president Nickey Brennan said it wasn't Croke Park's function to interpret every detail of every rule on a daily basis.

"If we did we'd get nothing else done. County Boards have plenty experience themselves in these areas. However, we have now clarified for Kerry that our interpretation of the rule is that a suspended player is not allowed to take part in formal training sessions and they have accepted that," he said.

This clearly says that Croke park weren't going to do it and saying the County Board have "plenty of experience" in these areas clearly implies that it is they should interpret it and, if not, them then who is this mysterious third party that is supposed to do it ?

So in conclusion, Main Street, you are talking shite  but I think you knew that and, as always, you are just looking to have a go at the Kingdom
