Any recommendations on websites for booking cheap hotels?

I'm using Tripadvisor at the moment as they check rates on 5 or 6 different sites. Prices can vary considerably for the same hotel on different sites!

Try laterooms.com
Usually are cheaper than the actual hotel, and you can book well in advance
What are you booking it for - a city break or holiday?

A holiday, but will only be booking any one hotel for a night or two, so a city break. thanks for that. I'll try it

Do a google search for a given hotel anyhow - there are plenty of agencys that have hotel rooms cheaper than on the hotels website.

I swear by www.booking.com. There is no deposit to be paid and you can often cancel up to 24 hours before check in

All those websites charge you, in some case the full amount if you cancel.  Most of them don't offer breakfast either.   I find it's best to check out the expedia, alpharooms or laterooms price then ring the hotel and ask for the reservations manager.

Explain that you want to stay and ask will they give you the same price but with breakfast or an upgraded room.  9 times out of 10 they will say OK as they have to pay the website 10%-15% and they breakfast costs them nothing extra as its usually a buffet.

Wheres my commission  ;).... Nah seriously that website has saved me a fortune on hotels in the past... It seems to be particularly useful when going further afield such as the states etc where there are major savings to be made.
