others need SUV type vehicles for farm work

The types of vehicle used for farm-work and off-road work don't look anything like SUVs - there's absolutely no reason for their existence other than to make 'small' people feel important.

Fair enough (but daft) that she put it into drive instead of reverse (I suppose it can happen with an automatic), but she must have been trying to reverse at warp speed to mount the path, and mount the car the other side.

If that was the case, they should not be driving.  They were not thinking as on an automatic, the first gear you can engage from PARK is reverse.

But surely you can't expect her to get the whole way back to the Malone Rd in a regular motor? 
Hate the things myself. Make a point of never letting them out in traffic.
