Kerry Mike

Gaels in Kerry are this week mourning the death, at the age of 87, of GAA legend Dan Kavanagh.

Uncle of Sean Walsh, winner of seven All-Ireland medals, the former Kerry great first caught the eye when starring for Kerry minors in the 1938 All-Ireland MFC final against Cavan.

He was a minor star again in 1939 before going onto win a Sigerson Cup medal with UCG in 1941. In the same year he played for Galway seniors against Kerry in their All-Ireland SFC final but ended up on the losing side.

He also played Railway Cup football with Connacht before returning to Kerry and appearing in the 1944 All-Ireland SFC final as a sub in the defeat to Roscommon.

His luck changed in 1946 when he lined out at left corner forward on the Kerry team that beat Roscommon in the All-Ireland final.

A very versatile player, he played in the historic Polo Grounds final in New York in 1947 when Cavan won the title.

The Dunquinn native achieved a unique record in winning three county SFC medals with three different clubs, Dingle (1944), Killarney (1949) and Dick Fitzgeralds (1951).

A great footballer from a great era of greats, was only reading a bit about him at Christmas. RIP Dan.
