Ian Dempsey played them the other morning and I found myself singing "I used to love her" near enough at the top of my voice . When it was over I felt myself taking a reddner and began asking myself what  the fcuk was after happening .

SammyG

One of the great live bands. As Rav67 said the spread of ages is unbelievable. I've been to see them with my Ma, Da, sister, my missus and my two kids, so a spread from 10-late 60's and everyone of us had a brilliant night. There's not too many bands you could say that about.

Lads I agree the Saw Doctors are the ultimate purveyors of the Culchie Classic but the thread is about finding Irelands top ten favourite culchie classics.  More nominations please

You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille, 400 children and a crop in the field!!

1) There's three pubs in Bohola ... as everybody knows ...   ;)

2) Shoe the Donkey  :D

3) Lannigan's Ball :o

And then there's the mammy of 'em all, a poignant ditty guaranteed to reduce most culchies to tears ...

Katie Daily ()

CHORUS:
Oh Come down the mountain Katie Daily
come down the mountain Katie do
Oh can't you hear us calling Katie Daily
we want to drink your Irish mountain dew

With her old man Katie came from Tipperary
in the pioneering year of '42
her old man he was shot in Tombstone City
For the makin' of his Irish mountain dew

Wake up and pay attention Katie Daily
I am the judge that's going to sentence you
For all the boys in court have drunk your whiskey
& to tell the truth drea Kate I've drunk it too

and so to jail they took poor Katie Daily
but very soon the gates they opened wide
and angel came for poor old Katie Daily
and took her far across the great divide

Before the Golden gate there stood poor Katie
St. Peter said, "Good brewers there are few
So pass inside the golden gates dear Katie
and start to brew your Heavenly mountain dew

Oh Come down the mountain Katie Daily
come down the mountain Katie do
she'll never more be comin' down that mountain
we never more will drink her mountain dew

And honourable mention for this iconic culchie video  ;D

Beat on the Peat - The 2nd Video

Volume 2   MNWR 2

A Day on the Bog In New York

It began with a dream.....and ended with the biggest Heritage spectacle ever seen in History. When a radio presenter told his listeners that he'd never been to a bog, the seeds for "Beat on the Peat '93" were sown. Such enthusiasm, it was felt, deserved and needed to be harnessed. Here was a perfect chance to promote the Ireland of old, the style and talents of the West of Ireland  in days of yore. The listeners demanded it and the presenter and radio station were happy to oblige.

And so it was. An ambitious plan to bring an entire Irish bog to the land of our emigrants, New York, U.S.A., just one year later. This slice of the West promoted all that's good in this part of the country. Thousands thronged to Yonkers Race Course on the weekend September17th - 18th, 1994. They witnessed threshing, ploughing, butter churning and turf cutting and the best of Irish entertainers in Song and Dance. It was a weekend about the sterling work of volunteers, about marvelous Irish singers and dancers, but most of all about people having fun.

Sit back and enjoy their story on Video
