Alright lads, I'm looking for a few new ideas for things to do during the warm-up before training. Any excruciatingly painful stretches etc appreciated. We normally start off with a light jog , some stretches and a bit of light ballwork. Anything to mix it up or any variations on the theme welcome.

Adult but with alot of players who are relatively new to the game

one thing we would do is get a group of 3 players, with one on the end line and one on the 13, the guys in the middle with the ball. we start of getting the guy in the middle to fist pass the ball to one of the guys, go round the back and take it of him when they come out. repeat this agin with the third man, and go in a figure of eight.
it can be done for fist passing, picking of the ground and high catches, and can be done at whatever speed for about a minute each time. warms the players up while getting them to practise the basics of the game at the same time!

I think Kerry do this and it is good for getting up to match pace
Make a large square about 20 by 20  depending on number involved
Divide into 2 teams and they keep the ball by hand passing only. If it is tight enough there will be a few hits and all players should constantly be on the move

A good warm up should tick certain boxes; 1st Raise the players core temperature &
                                                                HR gradually.
2nd Players should stretch dynamicly rather than
                                                                 staticly.
3rd The ball should play a prominant role so skills
                                                                 can be worked on too.

The following WU ticks all these boxes, but whatever WU you use make sure you incorporate the 3 points above.

Warm Up:
Get all players to jog randomly (no straight lines or circles) about a small area 2min.
Increase pace slightly and introduce tasks e.g. shuffle side to side 20sec-jog 40sec-high knees 20sec-jog 40sec-heel flicks 20sec-jog 40sec. 4min
Increase size of area, introduce ball, increase pace slightly, players pass amongst themselves with tasks e.g. players hand pass amongst themselves 1min-side steps and spinning turns 40sec-jog 40sec-3/4 pace 30sec-jog 30sec-3/4 pace 30sec-jog 30sec. 4min
1min break walk and dynamically stretch leg muscles.
Increase size of area again though not too big, back to jog with tasks 4min.

the above is a sample warm up only, you can introduce your own tasks( skills or dynamic stretches) but the important point is that players are shuffling, side stepping etc. to avoid each other all through, which is more game like than simple straight line running.

big believer in starting with basics

light jog,muscle strecches

drills
balls placed on 14 yard line and the players run out (correctly) 'pick up' the ball, run to 21, turn back adn place the balls back on the 14 yard line.
Run to end line again and the next man in the queue follows suit.
Pick ups with either foot.
few mins for this.

Then split each group end line and 21 yard line . They just run towards the lads on the 21 and hand pass to chest, the lad on the 21 runs down and hand passes to the lad on the end line.
Have them handpass the ball - off either hand

Spread them out to about 30 yards and do same , but with kick passes - bouncing in front of the man or chest passes. Either foot.

Then split up into two teams and play the 'posession game' in two small squares.
