Concreting the back street

The street in front of our house is where the car pulls up.......not the road. Think it could come from the Irish word sráid, which is translated into English as street. Many words don't have direct translations.

I agree.  A back yard would tend to have walls surrounding it, like a row of terraced houses in a city might have.

Mine on the other hand runs into the back lawn, well into the kerbs actually - but you know what I mean.

Concrete/Tarmac surface at the front or back of the house was always "the street" round our way.


Don't the yanks call their garden "the yard"?
