They are the standard to which every county must aspire.

But after two drab All-Ireland finals in a row, it's a worthwhile question.

An All-Ireland win by Dublin, or any Munster, Connacht or Ulster county with a decent support base would surely be better for the game?

Galway's last two All-Ireland wins, along with Ulster's emergence, were much happier times for those of us not from the kingdom.

Indeed, Kerry's period in the doldurms coincided with the an upsurge of interest in gaelic football.

In the 70s and 80s, when Kerry pretty much dominated, crowds of less than 10,000 attended AI semi-finals.

That said, the game wasn't irrevocably damaged.

In Roman mythology, Pietas was the goddess of duty to one's state, gods and family.

To look at it on a smaller scale, can the Armagh posters tells us has Crossmaglens dominance of Armagh football danaged Armagh football?

That's hardly comparing like with like.  A club championship has no implication for our national game.

Its very much like for like imo, perhaps even in a more magnified way given that Cross have 12 in a row.

BallyhaiseMan

Its up to every county to strive to meet the standards of excellence Kerry have set.

Of course it's bad for the game when one side dominates for long periods. Same is true of Golf(Tiger), Hurling (Kilkenny), Rugby League (when Wigan won everything every year), the Premiership (Utd) and the World Cup (Brazil).

It gets to a stage where people hate to see these teams do well and in fact I would say the only exception to that would be Brazil and that's only because they play the best style of football to watch.

As for Kerry now they've adopted their negative sty and 'champagne' football that we were used to seeing in the good ole days everyone is gonna hate them now too (If they don't already... cos I know I do!)

Gnevin

To be fair i'd rather have some one setting a high standard , Offaly win against Kerry to deny the 5 in a row is still talked about . The same can be said of Kilkenny and Cork but hurling would be very much the poorer without them
Anyway, long story short... is a phrase whose origins are complicated and rambling.

deiseach

Is there any sport which doesn't have this conversation every time the big bauble is handed out?

Fear ón Srath Bán

An emphatic no. Kerry can only play the system they're part of, and the opponents they're presented with. What's won is won on merit, and it's up to the rest of the counties to best them.
Carlsberg don't do Gombeenocracies, but by jaysus if they did...

Not all - We weren't saying that when Kerry were getting beat - It's brilliant to see Kerry win and play good football at the same time.

longball

should be north Kerry and south kerry!!
Only joking- think def NO to above question as Kerry are the standard that every team should strive to be at- they still cant beat tyrone thou :P

his holiness nb

This thread was inevitable, if Kerry won we would be saying they win too much, a guy last week claimed if Cork won it would be the weakest all Ireland in years, if the Dubs won there would be guys screaming "jesus, think of the children" etc etc
You cant win, fair play to Kerry they are most definately NOT bad for gaelic football.
Ask me holy bollix

This is ridiculous thread, u can blame Kerry for Cork being crap, we all knew that the real all ireland final was Dublin v Kerry which was a great game. Can't blame Kerry for the poor final, anyone time it is put upto kerry the games are good, even the Monaghan game was a good game.
Grand Slam Saturday!

Puckoon

Absolutly not. They are and have been a benchmark of success for decades.

Would you ever read my posts before you go off on one...yet again.

No-one is blaming Kerry for anything.
