That fat mess Lukaku is gone and they've all but recouped their spend. Great to see him off loaded. Even if they don't sign anyone else the squad is stronger. He was poison. Not a Manchester United player.

Squad is definitely not stronger.  I think we are losing sight of the fact that our main striker has left and won't be replaced.  This would not happen any other team or any United team in the past.  Additionally, we have lost 2 midfielders who regularly played and they have not been replaced.  We have not got rid of any of the deadwood either; you would always imagine that to play and stay at a big club like United you would have to be constantly delivering, yet you have Darmian, Jones, Rojo etc who seemingly are the ones in control with regard to whether they stay at United or not.

Trying to see positives is difficult.  The defence will hopefully be stronger, which not only will result in less goals conceded but should allow the team to be more balanced as there has been an over compensation in trying to protect the defence the past few years.  If the team is in fact fitter and the mentality has improved, there is no reason why they couldn't get to the immediate post Solskjaer levels again.  Its a poor reflection of United though when you will see the like of Ashley Young playing this season, fair play to him as a professional for knuckling down and filling another role but he wasn't good enough to start for United in his prime yet is starting now when he is over the hill.  Matic is too slow and immobile, need someone who is athletic to play DM.  Actually, no positives going forward.

Has a player so modest ever been moved around for so much in accumulated transfer fees?

He was never a Manchester Utd player. Mediocre. Fat (100kgs++) Lazy. Unfit. Lacks ability. No first touch. No second touch. Couldn't head the ball. Lacks awareness. Lacks positional sense. Couldn't hold the ball up. No ability to bring others into the play. Ill disciplined. COULD NOT STOP EATING!!
We can't tolerate average. He leaves and immediately the squad is stronger  they know the levels he produced aren't good enough. NOT A MANCHESTER UNITED PLAYER!

Lukaku scored goals at 1 every 2 games, nobody else in the squad has threatened to do so...

Helix.

See looks like Rojo to Everton. Hope they're as kind with the fee as they were with Schneiderlin!

Disappointing that it looks like no replacement for Lukaku will be coming in.

Absolute disgrace to be honest.

A good window. Lukaku, widely agreed to be the worst Utd player ever, has been off loaded. Herrera who gave his all but was extremely limited, off loaded. Valencia who has a worse record with crosses than Christ himself, off loaded.
Maguire acquired. He can only improve the defence. Jesus if I togged out I could improve that defence.
Disappointing that Rojo wasn't off loaded but asking Everton to part with real money seems to have been the sticking point for someone who cannot make toast.

Optimistic going forward. We were never going to undo 12 poor windows in one summer but a good start made.

Was/is the plan not to give Rashford the central role? You bring someone else in for big money, you are pressured to start them. Not like utd don't have attacking players to fill the front 3 positions, with Lukaku now gone...Rashford, Martial, Lingard, Mata, Sanchez, Greenwood.

I'd imagine Martial is more likely to get the CF berth but it will be interchangable. Looking at that list I don't see a 20 goal a season player I'll be happy to be proved wrong though.
