At an Ulster Council meeting in Clones on 24th September 1910, Lurgan Clubs were given permission to play in Co. Antrim because areas through which they would have to travel to play in Co. Armagh were hostile to the GAA.

Arthur Young in his Tour of Ireland (1779) tells of the Tipperary custom of 'hurling for a wife.'
The neighbours fixed on a young woman whom they thought should be married, agreed on a suitable husband for her and he was the leader in a hurling game. If his side won, he married the girl; if not, he lost her. 'These trials,' wrote Young, are not always finished in one Sunday; sometimes they take two or three, and the common expression when they are over is that such a girl was 'goaled'.'
