Has anyone ever been to an osteopath? Have desperate back and hip pain but no joy curing it in over a year.

Have yet to try an osteopath.

Not used one. But have you been to see a physio, doctor etc, to diagnose the problem?

Agree totally, I had serious back pain about 10 years ago and after seeing my gp and a physiotherapist with no joy out of desperation I tried a chiropractor. What a scam, I'd given this charlatan about £600 before I realised what a waste of money he was ( I know of plenty of people who've done the same). The gp's advice was the best, rest.

You'd need to consider that the founder of osteopathy believed he could "shake a child and stop scarlet fever, croup, diphtheria, and cure whooping cough in three days by a wring of its neck" before submitting yourself to this sort of wacky woo.

I went to an osteopath with a ruptured achillies tendon in the 70`s. Hospital had told me my football career was over. I was brought to an osteopath in Belfast(sadly passed away now) and I was back playing again in 6 months. I progressed back to senior county level, and played club football until I was 40. So it worked for me. He didnt wring my neck or shake me about, just manipulation. He was called Billy Waters and worked from his home off the Antrim road in Belfast. :)

1st step, and the most important (if you havent already had it done) is to get an MRI. This will let the back / hip specialist know exactly the prob and measures to take. Chronic hamstring issues as well?

Just Reitred, i used Billy Watters for years after my knee problems began. Didn't realise he was an osteopath though.

Like every 'expert' you will have good and bad osteopaths, my mum, my brother and myself suffered with bad backs over the years (my mum ended up have 2 discs removed due to them prolapsing). I also had chronic ankle problems as a teenager that no doctor or physio could fix.  We went to a now-retired osteopath in Portadown called Olivver McAtamney and he worked wonders with us.  He was highly recommended and I will never forget the newspaper cuttings he had on his walls about work he did with Kevin Keegan and Bryan Robson.  Don't rule them out but like everything look into their credentials.

Only the ignorant would rule them out.

I once used a chiropractor before I got wise to what a scam it was. Most of the "information" plastered over his walls was all about making sure I kept coming back for more treatment at $110 per visit. He got me to come in for a "lecture" one Saturday morning, so I went in and listened to this quack going on about vaccines causing autism. That was when I got suspicious. It was an expensive lesson to learn, I'd already lost about $700 to him.

I eventually got my back problem sorted out by a sports "doctor" (I'm not sure what her real title was, she wasn't an MD) but she was a bit more evidence-based.  She was more about exercise, pilates, massage and what have you.  She fixed the driving position in my car and checked out my riding position on the bike too. Only then did I start to see a bit of improvement. She was more interested in getting you fixed up so you didn't have to come back.

BCB  I know Oliver very well and have used him on occasion. I would see him most weekends, not for any injuries I must add.
Ardcheftain,Billy was a great character. How he knew whose turn it was to come in was a mystery. I had many painful nights in the front room but it was worth it.

The thought of seeing an osteopath has crossed my mind this last year or two. I just wasn't sure if they would do much good for me, as my problems are more muscular/postural rather than with disks/vertebrates etc. Would someone be able to advise me on this?

Does he and the missus still wear all their gold when they're out? :P
