It all means there's more good music being produced than ever before in history.

I wonder how many are willing to agree with that sentence.

Y'see, I think some people will read that as 'great' rather than 'good'.

I think there was almost surely more great music being produced in the 60's and early 70's (for example) and alot of that had to do with the birth of new genres and new technology. In the same breath everyone remembers the Beatles and the Stones but there was a whole hell of alot of forgettable and copy cat music back then, too. Every era looks better in retrospect because no one is going to spend much time remembering the music they didn't like.

Right now there is much more music being recorded and released than ever before so the reason there's more good music now has alot to do with brute force - everything can't be crap and even if only a small percentage can be classified as good that adds up to a massive amount of music.

I like the premise of this thread, it is tough to weed out all the pop/wrap crap that passes as music these days but I have seen some gems slip through the cracks.

These three are off the top of my head

Jets are like a reformed 70's rock band.
Adele has the pipes like a Carly Simon
Alabama Shakes are like the bumped of version of a beatnik/soul/southern rock band rolled into one--One of my Favorites!!!

I would struggle to name many good songs in the last ten years. Music has been destroyed by manufactured bands and reality television talent shows. The children of today will buy any rubbish most of them are told what to buy through multimillion pound advertisements.

Bring back the 60s,70s,80s or 90s when music meant more than just money.

Ah, nostalgia gettin the better of you, Captain?

Music has always been about making money -

60's? - Elvis
70's? - Bay City Rollers, Motown
80's? - Stock Aiken Waterman, New Kids on the Block

Need I go on? And reality shows? Opportunity Knocks and New Faces.

The good music is out there, you just gotta look harder, which is also easier nowadays with music being so readily available, and you don't have to save for an over priced LP to find out you don't like it.

Maybe nostalgia has got the better of me. Music is money exercise for those musicians involved however they still wrote and created songs that would inspire generations and most of them weren't manufactured.

Did Elvis write any of his songs?

Good shout, pity that they are the worst live act of the last ten years though.

Some songs on here aren't right. Seven Nation Army wasn't even the White Stripes best song let alone a song of the last 10 years. Likewise Hoppipola from Sigur Ros.

FOr me these would be up there with the best songs of the last 10 years:

Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7dt1li5SyY

It was a real lightbulb moment when I first heard it as it was something new and raw and very energetic I just thought it was class and still is.

Seasick Steve - Doghouse Boogie

The video says all that needs to be said about that song really.

Skinny Love - Bon Iver

Just a great song!

I know people are lamenting the death of music and such nonsense but there is still some great music out there if you broaden your horizons from the nonsense that they put on the mainstream TV and Radio.

NI especially doesn't have any kind of alternative radio stations bar an odd show on Radio Ulster. Keep an eye out for Jools Holland's show as well as he often has some hidden gems come on the show.

Something very different (and long) but incredibly audacious and inventive that is a good indication of the range of music you can find these days:

''Weird Al'' Yankovic - Trapped in the Drive-Thru
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHnTocdD7sk

I'm looking through the old iTunes library (with the ordering switched to year of release) but rather than it being hard to find good songs it's harder to choose which song by an artist I like the most. I'll see what I can dig up later.
