Only after watch as dirty a hit as your likely to see in the schools final. The number 5 took out the oppositions number 11 with a shoulder right down his front whilst the number 11 had just caught the ball. No attempt to play the ball, simply emptied the number 11 who had to go off. To make matters worst the ref didn't  view it as a foul , when infact it was a straight red, absolutely brutal refereeing.

Dungarvan Colleges beat both of the kingpins of Kilkenny schools hurling on the way to the All-Ireland. What more needs to be said? Fantastic.

All in the sacred name of 'letting the game flow'  We really need to get a grip on how hurling's rules are implemented.

Food for thought in today's Sindo on the subject of rules of hurling. It's good to see support for Cyril Farrell's comments about the All-Ireland final in contrast to Tomas Mulcahy's 'it's a man's game' drivel. There's no shame in admitting the sport hasn't adapted very well to increasingly (ahem) robust play and players.

Unfortunately the current state of the game suits the biggest vested interests.
If Wexford or Antrim won the All Ireland by pulling and dragging a meek Kilkenny or Tipperary who couldn't deal with it, the ensuing uproar would see the rules and refereeing quickly tightened.

The 'tackle' mentioned in the original post has been posted on YouTube. Straight red, no question. What in God's name did the ref think he saw?

Never were truer words spoken.

Would consider myself a "hurling man" with only (at best) a passing interest in football, but the amount of crap spoken and written about the "manliness" in hurling (in other words, the ability to take an illegal belt and keep going) and the "need for games to let the game flow" (in other words, to selectively apply the rules) is unbelievable, usually accompanied by some reference to the indescribable glory of the Munster championship.

IMHO there is a distinct difference in how the game is referred as between the "tier 2" teams and downwards and as for "the big boys".

an awful lot of stuff starting to be let go in club games now by referees, if you ask me.
players copying what teams have been doing on the tv for past few years

I see a very similar tackle, but not just as bad occurred in the vocational football final on sat in the last 5 mins, the football ref had no hesitation in showing red, what or how did the hurling ref not see that as a foul never mind a straight red I'll never know, for a players welfare to ignored in such fashion by the ref.  What was the refs name anyway?
