Killeshandra Leaguers - Named after the land league movement

Cootehill Shamrocks - Named after one of Cromwells generals

Cootehill aren't known as Shamrocks - that's Bailieborough

Right Myles I'll bite - how is our club named after a Cromwellian General...

This should be good...

And FYI it's Cootehill Celtic GAA not Shamrocks or Celts

There wouldn't be a whole pile of clubs in Mayo called by something other than the parish name - Mitchells, Stephenites, Moy Davitts, Davitts, Kilmovee Shamrocks, Crossmolina Deel Rovers, Charlestown Sarsfields (these last three would not generally be used in practice when talking about Kilmovee/Crossmolina / Charlestown).

Incidentally one of the two oldest clubs in Derry; Claudy (the other being Foreglen) is also named after John Mitchell. Maybe this was a general theme around Ireland when naming clubs at the beginning. Anyone else find this?

Fear Bun Na Sceilpe

Na Magha Hurling Club (Derry City). Its an older version of what we would call "na machairí" in modern Irish ie The Plains. In the annals of the 4 Masters the area on the west bank of the Foyle was known as Na Magha. It was chosen by Pearse Mellon son of Tommy Mellon.

Always wanted to know the name behind the 'plainsmen' Na Magha. Excellent.

Aye Brian Og, a great young fella. We were for years thinking about a name for the club; something that truly reflects the club. When Brian Og sadly passed away, his name was passed unanimously at a meeting for the club to be named after him. Who better way is there for the young children to adhere to, than someone who done so much in so little time within your own club?

QuoteOn November 27th, 1959, on a cold November afternoon in the basement of Larry Morrin's house at 27 Galley Avenue, in the parish of St. Vincents, in the west end of Toronto, a meeting was held to form a new Football & Hurling Club. The meeting was attended by Larry Morrin, Danny Columb, Con Barrett, Eddie O'Brien, Jimmy O'Brien, Dermot "Red" O'Neill, John Gilligan, Bill Costello, Louis Delaney, Maurice Houlihan, Martin Shaughnessy, Bill Farrell, Phil Walsh, Vince Howard, Ricky Leahy, Harold Parker, Billy Lehane & Paul McMahon.

Thus was born the St. Vincent's Gaelic Hurling & Football Club

Indeed. Large wooden boxes with glass in the front can be found throughout the clubhouse, also known as trophy cabinets. The original founders, good relations of my own obviously predicted the great success that was to come. :P

Aye John Mitchell supported the slavery movement in america. It may shock a few people!!
