What do you guys make of the fixture schedule? this week only one football game (Armagh v Derry) & next weekend 12 games, wouldn't it be better to have half of the qualifiers on this Saturday?
Is the ref going to finally blow his whistle?... No, he's going to blow his nose

The whole set up of the championship is a joke, yep half the qualifiers could be out of the way by sunday evening. But common sense never comes into it with the GAA.

Fuzzman

Yeah that's unreal right enuf. Only 1 game this weekend.

I know this has been chatted about a lot before but I was just having a look at the performance of teams who won their province in the last 5 years.

In the last 5 years there have been 20 teams in the semi final stages
Of this 20, only 7 have been provincial winners & its getting less and less each year

In 2006 there were 3 winners out of the 4 provincial winners
In 2007 that fell to 2 teams
In 2008 & 2009 that fell to just 1 team (Cork)
Last year ALL provincial winners lost for the 1st time

Here are the Provincial Winners in AI 1/4 finals since 2006
2010 Roscommon, Tyrone, Meath & Kerry - All 4 Lost - Cork won AI via back door
2009 Mayo, Tyrone, Dublin & Cork - Cork the only winners - Kerry won the AI via Back door
2008 Galway, Armagh, Dublin & Cork - Cork the only winners - Tyrone won AI via back door
2007 Sligo, Tyrone, Dublin, Kerry - Dublin & Kerry only winners- Kerry won AI front door
2006 Mayo, Armagh, Dublin & Cork - Mayo, Dublin & Cork - Kerry won the AI via Back door

Is it just coincidence or are teams doing better going via the qualifiers.
Only once in the past 5 years has a team won the AI the traditional way.
Dublin who had won the previous 5 Leinsters (05-09) on the trot, then "mysteriously" got hammered by Meath last year but then went on and should have beated Cork, the eventual Champions

When Tyrone won the AI in 2005 they played 10 games in total beating the Ulster, Leinster, Munster & AI champions. During the campaign many said they would get too tired as they'd too many matches on the trot whereas others said that this was good for them to build up a head of steam.

It makes a great change for me not to be waiting for the second round draw. Derry have been in it every year since 2001.

I would like to see Leitrim win their first ever qualifier game but looking at the teams they could get it's hard to see it  :-\
