I have an Irish passport so I already have a president and she does the job plenty well enough for me.  I live in the US so I'm aware that to my kids "our" president is Barack Obama, and now I have another President to contend with -Van Rumpuy. Our is in inverted commas so that you can choose which is more appropriate to you.

Not a lot. He can't do anything unless all countries within the EU agree with whatever the issue that day is. Basically Former United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger once posed the question: "Who do I call when I want to call Europe?". Now Europe have a figure head.

That was long before he became Bush's lapdog. Bertiebolix Ahern made sterling efforts too in the peace process but he's still a total chancer.

No harm Us Europeans having a president, I'd rather be represented by a fellow European than someone in Washington claiming to be the leader of the Free World. I live in the Free World and no Yank is my leader.

Van Rompuy has held the warring (not literally, just yet) factions of Flemish and Walloon together in Belgium over the past few years, a not inconsiderable achievement on any political richter scale, by any stretch.
