Any suggestions on what to do. Thinking of going to Manhatten but dont want to waste time walking in circles. Food and beer would be the thing

You'd be walking in right angles. Not helpful, I know.

It might be until you find the price of food and drink there. Dick Turpin would be jealous of the highway robbery going on all round.

I had a 10 hour layover, took a taxi into manhattan and ate lunch at smith & wollenskys. Walked around the cathederal and a jaunt into central park. Taxi back to JFK. It was about a 200$ layover, but it was my one and only time in noo yawk.

Blegard,

For me it would be

a Subway into Manhattan (Grand Central)
b Subway to and wander around Chinatown/Lower East Side (the Jewish area)
c Batting cages on Chelsea pier
d Few beers in Hells kitchen in one of the Irish Bars
e Subway back to JFK.

Did this some years ago on a similiar stopover and have to say I really enjoyed myself..... especially hanging around my old haunts in HK.

If its today you are there, The mens final in the US Open tennis is on and its not that far from JFK.  Or you could head towards the bronx were a few of us are off today, good monday club round here :)

For just over $300 you can do a helicopter trip from JFK to Manhattan which:

a) saves time

b) its a helicopter trip to Manahattan FFS!

Mmm. Sounds lovely. I always say that when (not if) I get to NYC I'll get more entertainment out of the mundane things that are the staple of cop shows since Kojak than out of, say, climbing the Empire State Building.

Thanks all

Allow for a 90min queue for the ESB..........imo not worth a visit if time is of a premium. Queue might be shorter extremely early in the morning.
