It might in a few years but Mayo are at a higher standard than the rest at the moment. It would be another demotion for them.

Not if played along side the Ring Cup. Their is enough time to play both .
Anyway, long story short... is a phrase whose origins are complicated and rambling.

obviously not training is the way forward!

they train and play away with their clubs which is hardly good for trying to get some form of team play organised. Cut the pish out of each other on the wednesday night then play together on the saturday is the Down way. A lot of the Down players had good games for their respective clubs so it's not that they haven't form just getting them to apply themselves with any degree of dedication to the county team is the issue

On the game itself, Derry were disappointing to say the least and only for a lot of soft free's from G Devlin/poor defending by Down the game would be over 10 minutes into the second half.

Oh and these other solutions to championship formats do need to remember that there is supposed to be club hurling going on in the background.

An  average of 2/3 extra games aint going to kill anyone . A lot of these counties have very few Hurling clubs and the extra game would easily fit into the schedule

slow corner back

Most of the Down clubs play in the Antrim leagues so they get a fair few league matches each year, add in the ulster league as well and it is quite a few games.

Then maybe, just maybe it'd be better to come up with more meaningful club structures to improve the standard of hurling in these counties than a day in the sun for useless county board officals to pat themselves on the back.

If the club game is strong then county team usually follows suit ala Clare hurling in the nineties.

Is their a reason we can't do both?

No certainly not, but if the juvenile and club structures are good then the foundations should be in place for a good county team.

If the club game is in the crapper then it'd be near on impossible to form a good county team no matter what format the league and championships are contrived.

100% agree just as in Dublin you have to start from the bottom up .

On teletext that Mayo have hammered Westmeath by 2-20 to 0-15. Westmeath must've really gone backwards this year.

So that means Westmeath are now out of the Christy Ring for this year and are facing relegation playoffs to avoid the Nicky Rackard. A big fall considering many thought they should have been in the Leinster Championship this year with Carlow. Does anyone know if its years of getting messed around that have seen them slip back, or is it just loss of good players?

Congratulations to Mayo though, it would be good to see them have a run at the Christy Ring cup, they've made great strides forward in the last 6 or 7 years. (As long as Keith Higgins stays fit and healthy and ready for the Connacht Semi-Final in June!)

Derry 2-15 Wicklow 0-9 is a result. Wicklow seem a bit off the standard of the other teams, probably favourites for relegation, they will play Westmeath now to see who plays the Nicky Rackard winners*

*Im basing all of this on Aertel having got the scores right - no guarantees there...

Mayo had a big win alright. I am surprised as anyone else about how they managed to beat Westmeath. Think the scoreline is correct. They were 8 ahead midway in the first half anyway Cosmo.
