What a load of crap. Ireland does not equal Catholic Ireland - why would it matter than his ancestors were Protestant? I'd assume Obama - especially given his obvious status as an 'ethnic minority' would not be as narrow minded to assume that there's a 'wrong' type of Irish.

He probably didn't 'play it up' as his Irish roots were not very significant in campaigning for presidency.

Judging how american politics work though if there was any advantage to be had it would have been exploited, his campaign team obviously didn't think it would fly with the irish american voters.
The offspring of Obamas irish ancestors are highly unlikely to regard themselves as irish americans, most likely they would regard themselves as stratight forward americans or dare i say it rednecks.

QuoteAfter announcing his running-mate as Senator Joseph Biden last Saturday, celebrations commenced in north Mayo where Obama's right-hand man has strong family ties.

The Mayo townlands of Rappa and Cooneal, outside Ballina, were home to the senator's ancestors.

Still no sign of Sligonian or Rossfan claiming him.
