So you think you know what the Troubles were like just because you actually lived through them?
You should just shut up and listen to Seafóid.
He's Galway's foremost expert on stuff that happens outside Galway.
If you were any use you'd be playing.

Nothing more tiresome than hearing folks from Ulster counties using the troubles as an excuse for their collectively poor overall record in the championship.

I have never heard anyone from Ulster attributing their lack of success at senior All Ireland Level to the troubles. If anything players from Ulster got annoyed at the patronisation of team officials in the South, slapping their backs after an All Ireland semi final defeat with the words "Sure it's a wonder how ye keep going up there at all lads!".

The attitude wasn't confined to the South either.I remember the Armagh manager attending my local club,Portadown Tir Na Nog's Annual Dinner in 1981,and saying he expected to be coming to a telephone box! Tir Na Nog were Armagh intermediate champions at the time!

From 1969 to 1994 (the troubles , ye know) wee six teams won 3 AIs. Dublin won 4. Considering the population available to them this is a dreadful return. What was the excuse?

Deaths were highest in the 70s when they won nothing
They were still high in the 80s when they won nothing.

By 91 the effects of investment in sport started coming through
The 3 Sams came right at the end

Ulster is probably the second strongest province in football but the political situation in the north hid that.

Seafoid you are embarrassing yourself.Underage titles galore came North as did Hogan Cup titles etc.Ulster was level pegging throughout the 70s and 80s.Down won the NFL league in 1983 and a few weeks later were knocked out of Ulster by Fermanagh. There was no outstanding team or couple of teams in Ulster, like you had in the noughties with Armagh and Tyrone.

Plenty of great footballers but no truly great teams.

Why no great teams ? 2 decades and nothing. And In the 2 decades after 1990 there were 2 Down, 3 Throne, one Armagh and one Derry all Irelands
Why were there none in the 70s or 80s ?

BTW you remind me of Coasters. Sure everything was fine.

No troubles in Galway, yet no Sam for 32 years during the same time.

While I wouldn't blame the troubles for lack of Sam's in the North, it's disrespectful to be blasé about the troubles, and that people didn't live in constant fear and harrassment.

T Fearon

Surely with this gangland feud raging currently, mostly around Croke Park, the Dubs have no chance of winning Sam this year?

They lost 3 finals in 4 years in the early 70s
The mid 80s team was good but never got over the 83 final.
The Donnellans had kids late as well..

anyway it is great to see Ulster teams doing well these days.
