I was in the area that i was caught speeding today.
I had came of the outer ring and taken a left past the back of forestside, heading down towards the Ormeau Road.
Now the only signage i seen about speed limits was the 50mph sign on the dual carriage way.
The mobile speed camera was sitting at the traffic light's below Forestside on the right hand side.
I checked today(to the best of my ability) and there was no sign notifying a change in the speed zone that i could see.
Any chance of that argument working......

No the police will be sitting in a position were they will get the most people speeding, or as they put it. Trying to reduce car accidents it that area

Right, after years of a clean driving record, I got a lovely letter in the post this morning informing me that I was doing 45mph in a 30 zone at 5 to 10 on a Sunday morning.
What can I expect points wise and fine wise for the above??

A friend of mine received a penalty notice before Christmas, she was clocked doing 52mph in a 40 zone (she was on the Ballygawley line). Got £60 fine, 3 penalty points and had to attend a 4 hour Speed Awareness course. She also had a clean record before this. I would imagine you will probabaly get something like this too.

the drive awareness course is only if you have done a certain amount over the limit. So it really depends on what the tolerance is for that camera.

I'm guessing if you have done 15 miles over the speed limit then you're fcuked
they were my thoughts as well.  Just wondering how many points and what sort of fine to expect??

If you respond that you were driving I'd imagine you'd either get the offer of three penalty points and a 60 fine or the course. If you want to take either of these then make sure you have both parts of your licence now as you won't be given much time to go get them.

In the event you have to go to court either because they don't offer the above or  you don't respond or have your licence  it'll probably be 3 penalty points and no more than 120 fine. I'd be surprised if the fixed penalty isn't offered.

One other thing if a court imposed penalty points they stay on your criminal record for life and stay on your licence for 5 years. They still only count for three. If the licence is endorsed without court the penalty points come off your licence after 4 years. Might be worth bearing mind if you hire cars abroad at all as some car hire companies get antsy about points

I thought points only lasted 3 years?

They count for 3 years only ie you cant get 12 or more points in any 3 year period or else you are disqualified however they stay on your licence for 4 years if they are imposed before the court stage.  What i mean is if you got 3 points on 1st Dec 2007 then they would count until 1st Dec 2010.  If you then applied for a duplicate licence today you would get a licence back and the three points would still appear on it, however if you applied this time next year for a duplicate licence, the points wouldnt be there any more.

If they are imposed by a court then you have to wait 5 years post conviction before the points are removed you will also have a lifelong criminal record.  Hope thats it explained a bit better.

Its only ever been an issue for me when hiring a car abroad when hire companies have tried to impose an extra fee because of the points

None.

If I am in the correct area, there are two 30mph signs on the dual carriage way just before the right turn for the Newtownbreda Road and the big green sign showing what direction to go. Granted the one on the left hand side of the carriageway is somewhat obscured by overgrown foliage, but the one in the centre is clear as day. Possibly you were travelling too fast to see it?

Besides, you should know that the speed limit in a built-up area is always 30mph, unless there are regular signs (no more than 400m apart) informing you of the change to the default limit.

Where did it happen?

I was caught doing 38mph in a 30 zone (in the north) by a fixed camera and got a letter from the PSNI stating their intention to prosecute. I sent back the letter saying I was the person driving and then i got another letter saying I had two options:

1) 3 points and £60 fine

2) £80 to attend a driving course (a few hours at the Kings Hall) and no points

I went for the second option so still have a clean driving licence

Got caught on the Saintfield road before I had twigged onto the fixed camera just before the overhead bridge going out, im guessing this is what caught you Fermgael.

Got the exact treatment quoted above, driving course for 80quid at kings hall and no points in return.

there is about 20-30 of yous, 1 chap taking it, lasts for 4 hours, you get break for cuppa tay and biscuits half way through. Have to have a few naff group discussions with your adjacent fellow offenders where you brainstorm what the risks are with hyporthetical driving scenarios shown on projector.

You have to introduce yourself at the start like its an AA meeting as well, "Hi, im Fermgael, I got caught on the saintfield road doin 90 in a 30 and this is my first offence, etc"

It not that bad though, they do a couple of real scenarios where people got killed but don't do go for shock tactics in line with the ads like I thought they might...

Donegal speed camera van is set on fire A speed camera van has been destroyed in an arson attack in County Donegal.

It was set on fire in Cashel, near Carndonagh, early on Saturday morning. One person was in the van but was not injured.

The attack has been condemned by Inishowen Fianna Fail TD Charlie McConalogue.

"The operator had to make a very quick exit from the van and it burned to a cinder," Mr McConalogue said.

"So it must have been quite a powerful device that was used to ignite the van.

"It's a reprehensible act and could have resulted in the death or injury of the speed van operator and it has shocked people locally that somebody would have undertaken such an act, such a dangerous thing

As good as any place to put this. Was on the way in to work this morning and happened upon an ingenious ploy to catch out motorists. A car was parked up on the footpath with a roof rack on top and who was hidden in behind it but one of them garda motorbikers. I've seen them hide the bike behind bus shelters before but this was a new one to me  :D. No speed gun though so presume she was checking the bus lane.
