QuoteSo you agree that paying high wages (or even above average wages) is not bringing good people into politics

I didn't say that. I said that people were not necessarily electing good people.

QuoteThe key to attracting good people into politics in my opinion is for these people to see that the systems are in such a way as to make it possible to effect change. My own job is project management and it would really frustrate me in a job if it took months and months to get anything done, no matter what money I was on.

I certainly agree with this. Many good people in politics and in public employment are obstructed by systems not fit for purpose.

Althoug all German and EU banks need to take a hit for their reckless lending to Irish banks, if I was Jurgen taxpayer I would find it hard to swallow contributing to bailing out the Irish economy if I say the levels of pay at the top of the Irish public sector.

Remember the consultant who said €250k was Mickey Mouse moey a few years ago.

I don't know if it is the colonial mindset but there is no will to take on the vested interests by any of the parties ( including Sinn Fein who don't seem to think there is anything worng with 108 MLAs when there is only about 80 reps in Scotland with 3 times the population).

Fine Gael worringly are sticking by the Croke Park deal. Surely anyone earning over 100k should have their basic salaries and bonuses cut.

On the subject of paying peanuts and getting monkeys. It is not about pay.In an ideal world the best 100 people would be TDs running the country. Most people are put off by the system of road fixing and speeding up applications for passports etc.

QuoteWhen a country is bankrupt its leaders pay should reflect that.

The government is bankrupt or close to it. The state is a going concern.

QuoteQuestion is how did we end up in this state with such brilliant people?

We elected them.
QuoteAstonishing that most of the peasants will actually vote in favour for all this madness to happen.

Many of these "peasants" also voted for the previous government who created this situation.

So you agree that paying high wages (or even above average wages) is not bringing good people into politics - so now that this the false reason is exposed why wouldn't a huge decrease in politician wages be a sensible idea? SF i believe said they would cap it at €100k, i know plenty of very intelligent company managers with real world experience who would be paid less than that.

Ireland has a deeply ingrained culture of gombeenocracy and corruption that the populus fully accepted in the good old days. Does anyone really think the vast majority of parish pump politicians are not involved in politics to fill their boots? They can earn 200 grand a year and get some extra by helping out their mates. The "best people" would have no interest in this world despite the wages on offer.

Lads, this is election spake.

Afterwards it will be completely different.

And as for Jurgen Taxpayer, he is laughing all the way to the bank that Paddy Taxpayer is bailing out for him. Germany is not bailing us out, we are bailing them out. They are lending us very expensive money to pay back debts to their banks.

He shot 30,000,000 of them so he probably stopped worrying.
