Big difference between grilling and BBQ. Living here on the Southside of Chicago, I am spoiled with some of the best BBQ spots in the world. A proper BBQ will not have a charcoal taste but a sweet wood smoke flavor.

Here is the #1 BBQ in the States. This place has won every major BBQ award. I have been there about 6 times, wish I lived closer.

charcoal is far nicer for the food taste but a pain to set up and clean after compared to the gas.  i have gas and would recommend it for ease of use.

The Real Laoislad

There was a chippers in Dublin city centre near Stephens Green somewhere I think, that cooked their chips with the heat from charcoal up until a few years ago.

We have a gas bbq, but as some1 mentioned before there are charcoals on it too.
They are not actual charcoals, things called lava rocks which have the same effect as charcoals but do not need to be replaced at the end of the bbq.
One set of lava rocks would do the whole year!
Brilliant job, same smoky taste but with the ease of use of gas.
As for doing anything on a bbq, unless you marinade your meat, it will end up being too dry!
Love a good bbq!

lava rocks don't give the same taste as  charcoals. And your food is only dry if you cook it at too high temperate or for too long .
Anyway, long story short... is a phrase whose origins are complicated and rambling.

If you are buying a gas bbq - buy one with cast iron burners. I am on my 3rd bbq cooker since 2001. The first 2 were cheapo's c €150 sort of money from the likes of B&Q. The burners were made of tinny mild steel and just crumbled after a period of time. The current machine is a different beast - Cast iron burners & complete stainless steel body. Bought it on ebay for abour £200stg. Mighty Yoke! Have it over 3 yrs now and its flying considering it gets used all year round. Hard to beat the oul sirloin bbq'd even in the month of january!- bbq sittin outside the back door - pull the cover off and grill your steak - yum yum.

Don't understand why anyone in Ireland would buy a BBQ, equal to convertible cars. Couple of bricks, bit of chicken wire, wee tray laid underneath, start the coal very earlier, as it's about to burn out start cooking, 20 mins later start drinking. Why waste money buying one of these fancy yokes?

Couldnt disagree more!
My BBQ has been a fantastic investment - Never have to grill lamb cutlets in the kitchen anymore and everyone knows the mess, smoke, flames, grease all over the shop that goes with them!

Don't disagree, but why did you buy one? Couldn't you just throw one up in a few minutes in the back yard for all the use you're going to realisitically get out of it?

you're thinking of a charcoal one - made one myself one time some steel and the welder! - mine's gas. - deadly handy.

That's where I become a little confused. I've a gas cooker in my house, why'd I want a gas BBQ. Charcoal/wood/(ever tried turf) or nothing.
